Ranatunga wants cricket sledging banned Former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga wants sledging banned from cricket following the problems it has caused in Australia. His comments come as Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh is appealing a three Test ban after being found guilty of racially abusing Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds when he allegedly called him a "big monkey". "Australia have had these issues with some of the touring sides," said Ranatunga, now the Sri Lankan Cricket chairman. "History shows whenever they get it back they struggle. "I'm not saying it is the right thing. "Sometimes they also need to learn a lesson. "I'm a great believer they should stop all shouting in the grounds. "Cricket is a game which was played by gentlemen in the past and that is the way it should be." India are still threatening to pull out of the Australia tour, an option first canvassed after Harbhajan was found guilty after the tourists lost the second Test at the SCG in dramatic circumstances. India withdrew the threat after the International Cricket Council (ICC) sacked umpire Steve Bucknor for the third Test and cleared Harbhajan to play pending an appeal. Although India lost the Test series 2-1 they are now due to play in a triangular one-day series with Australia and Sri Lanka, but the future of that series could hang on the Harbhajan appeal. Ranatunga is no stranger to on-field furore in Australia. He led his players off the field during the 1995 Boxing Day Test after controversial umpire Darrell Hair no-balled off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan seven times for chucking. Sri Lanka were persuaded to return to the field but his actions as captain caused an uproar in world cricket. "I was trying to protect one of my colleagues who was accused badly," Ranatunga said. "But it is very important for the ICC to work closely with the cricket boards."

Now there are suggestions that since the word monkey is not caught on the tape, bhajji may be penalized for abusive comments [Level 2.8], but Boria Majumdar is so livid about this. He is asking Why Hogg was let off? Since he had used the word "Bastard" which is also an abusive term and yet the aussies are let off. He is also livid about BCCI for not sending a lawyer and giving the players some assurance. He says they should be in Melbourne practicing for the match. But here they are having sleepless nights. But the aussies go free again?

As Harbhajan Singh appeals his three test ban for racial abuse at the Adelaide Federal Court, it’s been revealed the seven non-Test playing members of the Indian limited overs squad have arrived in Adelaide, despite being scheduled to be lodged in Melbourne ahead of Friday’s sell out Twenty20 match against Australia at the MCG. Team India has maintained its stance that they will leave Australia if Harbhajan’s ban is not overturned. The move to have the one day squad together is reminiscent of scenes in Sydney, where the test squad refused to travel to Canberra for two days after Harbhajan was originally found guilty of calling Andrew Symonds ‘a monkey’. The Harbhajan appeal has been in progress for over three hours, with Australian captain Ricky Ponting the first to speak, then the first to leave, an hour after proceedings commenced.
