When both in their prime, i'd go with Dravid. Sachin has showed time and time again he is not able to stand up when the pressure is on, and has repeatedly failed to score runs in the second innings of test matches. Compare this to Dravid, who depite being out of his depth these days, was rather consistent at his best.

In general cricket skill level SRT > RD, but as you say, 2nd Inn under pressure, then its a mental game, there RD > SRT.

Definitely, on skill level and cricket smarts alone Sachin is without a doubt one of the greatest ever.

The funny thing is that SRT has more tons in the 2nd innings than RD against top opposition. Pity his top class efforts like 122,113,136 came when others fell like nine pins.

not trying to prove that Sachin is better then Dravid..but don't you think we and the Aussie commentators are getting a little carried away with the whole 2nd innings thing? I think it really started when Tendulkar failed in England in the 2nd innings on all 3 occasions, 2 of which were meaningless. And against Australia it's been a one off in this series. He's played some crucial, match winning knocks in the 2nd innings against Australia. None better then his 155* against Warne in Chennai, his match winning 55 on a stick mumbai surface, and a 52 in the 4th innings against McWarne. One thing I've noticed about Tendulkar is that he's hell bent on being the one to take India to victory. So he identifies a problem area, goes back to the drawing board and figures out how to deal with it, and promptly does it. Whether it was his aggression against SAF in Ireland, or bloody minded accumulation in England, or his strokeplay in the ODIs in ENG, we've seen a different part of Tendulkar for each series. Now more then ever he's become a master of the situation. We see this in each of his knocks in Australia. Initiative seeking in Melbourne, dragging India to a lead in Sydney, combative in Perth, and masterfully complete in Adelaide. And when the pressure has been on, Tendulkar is responding more then ever in this stage of his career. His two 50s in the ENG series set the game up for India to take. In the ODI series with India down 2-1, he responded in each and every game to win it for India, 55, 72, 94, and 30 (cut short). A crucial 97 to win India the series in Gwalior, and a match winning knock in Perth along with Dravid. He does have his failures, but who doesn't? It's funny how people remember the bad things for a long time to come but they forget the good things in an instant...

For the test matches ignoramus here' date=' they are set up in the first innings.[/quote'] But that doesn't mean that his 4th innings' failure should be ignored and he should be unequivocally titled a better test bat than Dravid.

i don't think their 4th innings averages are too far apart. Just for curiosity sake..when was the last time Dravid hit a ton in the 4th innings.

For the test matches ignoramus here' date=' they are set up in the first innings.[/quote'] 1st Inn sets it up. But you do need 2nd Inn to finish it through many times and sometimes you have to save the series as well. No one is denying 1st Inn is important, or SRT is great. But when you compare - then this talk of RD having the slight edge in Tests and SRT being better in ODIs is bound to come up.

Yeah I would agree with that. However, I don't understand how people say that Tendulkar can't bat in the 2nd innings (esp since we're looking at his entire career, and not just a recent poor patch in the 2nd innings.) Tendulkar still averages 51.33 in 3rd and 4th innings' of matches which India won, and I would rate his 155n.o. against Australia in Chennai as one of the best 2nd innings knocks I have seen. Mark my words, Sachin will turn around his poor 2nd innings form of late. In all of the innings in Aus, he was looking very good in the 2nd innings and then the first mistake he makes results in his wicket. I am not making excuses, it is just that its annoying to see that happen to Sachin, and then see punces like Ponting and Symonds get 50 lives each in their innings'. However, 2nd innings of Tests, Id put RD over Sachin but only slightly. However, overall Sachin's the best. Anyone who thinks there isnt pressure in the first innings is kidding themselves.

When the annals of cricket history will be written, Rahul dravid will be given a passing mention..Sachin tendulkar a complete chapter. Even thinking about comparing these two is blasphemy.
