Is Kaneria being discriminated against?

Kaneria fumes on contract demotion KARACHI, February 6: Frustrated at being demoted in the new central contracts list, Pakistani leg-spinner Danish Kaneria said his achievement of being among the country's top five bowlers with over 200 Test wickets deserved a bit more respect. Kaneria was recently demoted to category C in the central contracts and despite his 51 Test appearances bracketed along with junior players like Fawad Alam who has played just four One-Day Internationals. Danish was also told to attend a two-week spinner's specialised camp in Lahore under the supervision of former Test spinners, Intikhab Alam and Tauseef Ahmed. "I went into the camp with a great deal of frustration, having been demoted in the Pakistan Cricket Board contracts ratings system. It is still hurting me," Kaneria said. "I have been Pakistan's highest wicket-taker for the last four years, and I am now one of the top three or four in terms of seniority, having made my Test debut in 2001," he said. Kaneria said his exploits were second only to greats like Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis and he did not deserve to be demoted in the contracts list. "I have played 51 Tests now and once I pass Abdul Qadir's 236 Test wickets, hopefully this year, I will then have only the fast bowlers ahead of me, Waqar Younis, Imran Khan and Wasim Akram. I just feel that my achievement deserves a bit more respect. I am respected more when I play at Essex," he stated. Kaneria is bracketed with players who have just come into the Pakistani system and is left behind the players like Umar Gul and Mohammad Asif, who despite being good, have not played as much cricket as him. "I am not complaining or frustrated for financial reasons, it is just an embarrassment for me and it pains very much. I have spoken to the PCB but it does not seem that my situation is going to change," Kaneria stated. "Officials have said that the reason for my demotion is that I only play Test cricket, but this is not my fault. I have always been desperate to be given a chance to prove myself as a wicket-taker in One-Day Internationals but never had that opportunity on an extended basis. My behaviour has always been good on tours, I am rarely injured, what more do I have to do?" he asked. ------------------------------- Is he facing discrimination?

I dont give a hoot to the conspiracy theories given about Kaneria being a Hindu and what not, coz I am pretty sure its rubbish. But from a cricketing point of view, its shocking to see him get a grade C contract. Its like giving MS Dhoni a grade C contract in India. Being a senior player and a 50 test veteran, there is no way Danish should have got anything less than a B grade contract. But, isnt this now common occurrence in Pakistan ? They systematically keep rubbishing their players, be it retired ones or current players. I have seen Wasim Akram CRY on TV ( yes, with tears in his eyes) that he felt let down by the Pakistan Board and the Pakistan people. Pity Danish.

MM, its not about conspiracy theories.... But if you look at it from cricketing point of view. Kaneria has played almost all matches over the past 3-4 years. he has been their consistent performer and i agree that his form has not been great in the past couple of series but the man has definitely toiled like a donkey on the field to get wickets. compare that to somebody like Asif, who has not played more that 5 tests since (and including) series in England and he gets a A contract.... and even his form has not been that great in SA series or Gul who is also injured most of the time gets a B contract...

Waqar Younis was furious as well. Search Salim Altaf and Waqar Younis on youtube. As far as Kaneria is concerned i don't think he deserves a place in the ODI side. His ODI bowling isn't much better than that of Afridi and Afridi is light years ahead of him as a fielder and as a batsman. Even in test matches lately his efficiency has been very poor and has leaked 100s of runs/innings yet even with the terrible recent record he has constantly been given chances ahead of the likes of A Rehman who picked 11 wickets in his 1st 2 tests and Mushy who has been destroying county teams for the last 5 or 6 years.
