cochise Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 The last time you asked someone to retire in jest (MEK Hussey, remember?)...his career went into a tailspin and he still hasn't emerged. Now you ask Ponting to retire in jest again? Beware the curse of the DSR!!! :nervous:
King Tendulkar Posted March 25, 2009 Author Posted March 25, 2009 If this is a joke' date=' I don't get it[/quote'] Get these stats for Ponting and explain? 2007 he averaged only 38 2008 he averaged 47 2009 he now averages a pathetic 32.
graphic23 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Hey KT, Year 2003: 17.00 Avg Year 2005: 44 Avg Year 2006: 24.26 Avg Can you please guess which batsman this is ?
King Tendulkar Posted March 25, 2009 Author Posted March 25, 2009 Hey KT, Year 2003: 17.00 Avg Year 2005: 44 Avg Year 2006: 24.26 Avg Can you please guess which batsman this is ? No idea. Only interested in current form over last few years, as form over last few years is the baraomter of wether someone should retire. Thus ponting is mediocre over last 3 years so is on the way down. Same as Hussey over last year or so. Not interested in picking one year here and there and looking ar sustained patterns. Guess which batsmans recent form this is, he has whooped pontings ar#se!! 2004 91.50 2005 44.50 2006 24.27 2007 55.42 2008 48.61 2009 160 That is consistent brillinace over long sustained period. Comapre that to Pontings recent 3 years! Seriously guess who?

I don't need to praise Sachin by degrading Ponting. Apparently, that is not the case with others.
King Tendulkar Posted March 25, 2009 Author Posted March 25, 2009 Satish' date=' some of us are Sachin worshippers because we love Sachin - not because we hate other people. I don't need to praise Sachin by degrading Ponting. Apparently, that is not the case with others.[/quote'] Whats degrading in pointing out someones slump in form? I have pointed out Haydens and Huuseys slump. Now just pointing out pontings clear slump and the fact he has performed poorly in the two hardest places to bat for him i.e India and England. What is your view on pontings last 3 years mediocre performance? Please clarify your views on his stats I have highlighted? If it was just one year it can be viewed as temporary out of form etc. But 3 years in a row!!! He is on a downward spiral me thinks!
graphic23 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Talk to me again when another captain goes to England, gets whooped 2-1, is the first captain to lose the Ashes in 20 years, and then as a retaliation, wins the next series 5-0, first Australian captain since 1920s - and wins the man of the series by leading with the bat. Again, first series loss at home in 15 years, and then goes to SA with not much of a changed lineup and wins back the series 2-1. He's a great cricketer - maybe not a great captain. Yeah, I make fun of him when he makes stupid comments and they come back to bite him. I would never say a word about his batting prowess though. He has a weakness - so does every other batsman in the world, really. And regarding the stats, last 3 years is from Jan 1 2006 -> Present; year 2006 10 1333 196 88.86 7 0 - - 0 8 0 year 2007 4 192 56 38.40 0 - - - - 6 0 year 2008 14 1182 158 47.28 4 0 - - 0 13 0 year 2009 4 263 83 32.87 0 - - - - 6 0 I'd say thats not a bad record at all. You might disagree though. Innings by Innings breakdown for those 4 years: 1st match innings 2006-2009 32 1008 196 56.00 5 0 - - 0 6 0 2nd match innings 2006-2009 32 850 142 60.71 3 - - - - 9 0 3rd match innings 2006-2009 32 726 116 48.40 1 0 - - 0 10 0 4th match innings 2006-2009 26 386 143* 64.33 2 - - - - 8 0 I'd say thats an awesome record fora batsman. Yeah, so even in the stats you posted, I've posted the same with a bit of breakup, and mine say that he was awesome, while yours suggest that he hasn't been reaching his own standards.
fineleg Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Good writeup graphic. Punter is an excellent batsman, although I dislike him very much.
Bumblebee Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Satish' date=' some of us are Sachin worshippers because we love Sachin - not because we hate other people. I don't need to praise Sachin by degrading Ponting. Apparently, that is not the case with others.[/quote'] very well put up!!
dial_100 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Well... I wont call him mediocre at all. He is for sure in TOP 5 all time greats. However he is as individual, he is a good, actually very good batsman. And I also agree with the claim that he didn't face much strong bowling line up. Like WI he played very later when all of their Walsh, Ambrose were gone. Akram, Waqar, for Pak gone, McGrath, Warne he never played. and A donald and Pollock he played very late. He played much less against Pak. Only after 1998, especially in Pak he played only 1 game. In SA, he played only aftter 2002. And he got many 10+ test every year once all these bowlers are gone ie. after 1999-2000. On the contrary, SRT got very few tests in his early days when he was in Prime form only at 6.6 test per year. So you are playing 2 different countries 6 months apart. Also hey played NZ, SA, Pak, Eng, Aus from 1989-1992 unlike RP started playing in these nations late 90s or every early 2000. So were are talking about players of two adjacent eras. Thats how he got so fast w/ his centuries. SRT despite playing 157 tests, played only 69 at home but RP played 73 of his 130 test in Australia. Hard to compare. So even though RP scored his runs quickly, he played too many games in short time.
Anakin Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 All I can say about Pwnting is, his batting peak and the slump of bowling quality will draw very similar graphs.
graphic23 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 All I can say about Pwnting is' date=' his batting peak and the slump of bowling quality will draw very similar graphs.[/quote'] You play at what you're given. How can he go back and play Curtly Ambrose at his peak when he's retired ?
Anakin Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Well he did play the latter part of 90s didn't he? If he couldn't handle them, I can guess what he'd done against Ambrose
