Ref Crowe refuses to relent Author: Debasish Datta Date: 19 Feb 2008 Indians complain against white ball getting lost in the white hats worn by umpires A representational picture of Malinga’s hand coming in front of the umpire shows how the batsman may lose sight of the ball in the umpire’s white hat. PIC/AFP ADELAIDE: The Indian players are having a tough time with umpires in the series Down Under. First it was their poor decisions and now it is with their attire. The batters feel that the white ball gets merged with the umpires’ white hats when bowlers’ especially Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga flings his hand in front of the umpires face in his delivery stride. India’s assistant coach Lalchand Rajput put in the players’ request for a change in the colour of the umpires hats to match referee Jeff Crowe. Rajput explained in detail the players’ problems to Crowe. Did not agree But the Kiwi did not agree to the Indian team’s demand. “Do you mean to say that umpires should not use caps and stand in the scorching sun?†is what Crowe is believed to have told Rajput. Rajput reiterated that was not what the players wanted. Instead he requested Crowe to request umpires to change the colour of their hats citing example of the ongoing New Zealand-England ODI series where the umpires are wearing red caps. Still Crowe refused to relent
