Read a stat before the 1st Test which said that Kohli has never lost a Test when he has won the toss. Not sure other captains have this kind of track record wrt the toss dictating match outcomes.

How crucial was the toss in other decades?

Most of the factors have been controlled now. Pitch, playing conditions, number of overs making toss a deciding factors.

But does toss trump home advantage nowadays?

Cook won 4 tosses when they toured India in 2016-2017, they batted first in most of the games and still lost handsomely (mostly down to their bowling tbf).
