Chopra and Dhawan star in ten-wicket win The results from the third day of the Ranji one-day tournament. More... Ranji Trophy ODI tournament, 3rd day Chopra and Dhawan star in ten-wicket win Cricinfo staff February 28, 2008 The following are the summary of results from the third day of the Ranji Trophy one-day tournament 327597.jpg Aakash Chopra scored an unbeaten 130 off 140 balls in Delhi's big win over Punjab © Cricinfo Ltd North Zone Unbeaten centuries from Aakash Chopra and Shikhar Dhawan gave Delhi a massive ten-wicket win over Punjab at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Ravi Inder, Uday Kaul and Ankur Kakkar scored half-centuries to take Punjab to a competitive 274. But Chopra and Dhawan scored at more than six an over to chase the total with 39 balls to spare. Punjab used six bowlers and none of them conceded less than five an over, with Manpreet Gony and Kakkar going for more than seven each. Vishal Bhatia took 4 for 32 with his left-arm spin as Himachal bowled out Haryana for 193 and chased the target with six overs to spare at the Harbax Singh Stadium in Delhi. Jammu & Kashmir collapsed to a 96-run defeat against Services in Delhi's Palam A Ground. After Jasvir Singh (73) and Soomik Chatarjee (71*) steered Services to 281 for 6 in 50 overs, Rakesh Kumar removed the openers in the first over. Ian Dev Singh and Huwaid Ronga led a brief recovery of 59 runs but after Ronga was run out for 21, J&K kept losing wickets at regular intervals. A Kush, playing in only his second List A match, took 3 for 37. East Zone Bengal needed only 29 overs to wrap up a nine-wicket win against Assam at the North-East Frontier Railway Stadium in Guwahati. S Sharath scored an unbeaten 80 from 148 balls but with absolutely no support from the rest of the batsmen - the next highest score being 14 - he could only push Assam's total to 147. Arindam Das and Anustup Majumdar added 89 runs in 19 overs but after Majumdar's dismissal, Das and Wriddhiman Saha knocked off the remaining 59 required from 60 balls to gain a bonus point for Bengal. Sourav Dubey's 106-ball 93 wasn't enough for Tripura to get their second win in a row as Orissa chased Tripura's 260 with four wickets spare at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. Pinninti Jayachandra and Preetamjit Das took three wickets each as no other Tripura batsman scored more than 39. Three half-centuries from top-order batsmen - Bikas Pati, Payas Ranjan Sinha and Halhadar Das - gave Orissa their second win of the tournament. West Zone After chasing 358 against Baroda at the same venue just a day before, Mumbai fell 46 runs short of Gujarat's 307 at the Deccan Gymkhana Ground in Pune. Mumbai bowlers Ajit Agarkar, Rohan Raje and Murtuza Hussain went for more than six and a half an over as four Gujarat batsmen helped themselves to half-centuries. Medium-pace bowler Abhishek Nayar was taken for 19 runs in his two overs. Mumbai were in trouble when they lost four wickets for 94 runs. Anup Revendkar and Aditya Tare got fifties but having lost those early wickets Mumbai couldn't pick themselves up for a fightback. Kedar Jadhav ensured Maharashtra successfully chased Saurashtra's 327 by hammering a 97-ball 124 at the PYC Gymkhana Ground in Pune. Cheteshwar Pujara added 68 with Sagar Jogiyani and 107 with Shitanshu Kotak to take Saurashtra to a big total in their opening game of the tournament. Maharashtra scored at 6.8 runs an over and lost only five wickets in getting to the target.

Jaffer can play one dayers!!:omg::omg: http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/ranjioneday/content/story/340193.html West Zone Wasim Jaffer clobbered an unbeaten 132-ball 178 as Mumbai chased down 358 to post a sensational win over Baroda at the Deccan Gymkhana Ground in Pune. Jaffer carted 19 fours and four sixes and put on an opening stand of 159 with the in-form Ajinkya Rahane in just 21.3 overs. Mumbai looked to be in trouble at 299 for 7, but debutant Ankit Chavan, coming in at No. 9, scored a brisk 24 to help Jaffer guide Mumbai to victory. Baroda reached their total on the back of a ferocious assault from Pinal Shah, who made an unbeaten 157 from 101 balls. In another batsmen-dominated thriller in Pune, Gujarat fell an agonising five runs short of Maharashtra's 326 at the PYC Gymkhana Ground. Each of Maharashtra's top three batsmen scored more than 50, with captain Venugopal Rao going on to make a 79-ball 104. Gujarat were well on track for victory after Priyank Panchal (123) and Parthiv Patel (66) took them to 183 for 1 in 30 overs. However, with none of their other batsmen making more than 30, Gujarat ended up short of their target. South Zone Tamil Nadu and Karnataka remain the only undefeated teams in South Zone after two rounds of the Ranji one-dayers while Andhra and Hyderabad have lost both their encounters. Palani Amranath and R Ashwin shared seven wickets between them as Tamil Nadu shot out Kerala for 91at the Central Polytechnic India Pistons Ground. Only three batsmen reached double figures for Kerala with debutant Krishna Chandran making 35.The modest target was chased down with seven wickets and more than 26 overs to spare. M Vijay led the chase with an unbeaten 41. Offspinner Karimuttathu Rakesh's tidy bowling of 9.4-3-18-2 was the lone bright spot for Kerala. A dominant batting performance from Karnataka saw them cruise to a 111-run win over Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Powered by Bharat Chipli's 100 and Vinay Kumar's 75, who shared a 143-run stand for the third wicket, Karnataka piled up a massive 312. Ravi Teja was the only Hyderabad bowler to escape punishment, finishing with tidy figures of 1 for 34 in his 10 overs. Vinay then tore through the Hyderabad top-order to leave them struggling at 66 for 4, a position from which they could not mount a serious attempt at the Karnataka total. At the Guru Nanak College Ground in Chennai, Goa clinched a high-scoring thriller by two wickets. After opting to bat, Andhra posted a challenging 291, thanks to opener Manoj Sai's 88 and captain Gnaneswara Rao's 59. Goa made a spirited reply with their openers setting the platform with a 100-run stand. They appeared to be coasting to victory with former international Ajay Ratra (63) and Shadab Jakati (74) taking them to 269 for 4, but Goa lost four wickets for seven runs to be in a spot of bother before securing the win with four balls to spare. Bangalore are gonna win now. :hysterical:

Ranji One-dayers: Day 3 Dhawan, Chopra hit tons as host Delhi cruise to a victory; in other matches Vidarbha derail Railways. HT brings Ranji Roundup. More... Hindustan Times February 29, 2008 First Published: 15:53 IST(29/2/2008) Last Updated: 16:00 IST(29/2/2008) Double delight for Delhi (by Arjun Sen in New Delhi) Confidence can often border on arrogance. A supremely confident outfit can, in a matter of days, turn into a smug group of men belittling every obstacle in their way. Winning can, all of a sudden, appear a given, while defeat becomes an alien feeling. Delhi are yet to lose a match this season. The closest they got to one was against Himachal Pradesh at Dharamsala. They, however, drew that game, and since then have kept a loss as far away from them as possible. Despite all their success, however, the players still look as hungry as they did while stepping out on to the field for their season opener against Rajasthan. And if there was any more proof needed on this seemingly insatiable hunger, it came at the Kotla on Thursday. Chasing Punjab's 274 in the second one-dayer, Delhi cantered to an amazing 10-wicket win in just 43.3 overs. The stars for the hosts were, once again, Aakash Chopra (130*) and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan (139*). The two scored incredibly aggressive centuries - Chopra scoring his second successive - to hand Punjab what would undoubtedly be a debilitating loss. A loss, which the visitors would hardly have expected when they got to 274 in their 50 overs. Punjab had a very bad start to their innings, when Amit Bhandari trapped Sunny Sohal off the second ball of the match. Things got worse in the fourth over as last game centurion Karan Goel fell to a brilliant reflex catch at second slip by Chopra off Sumit Narwal. Delhi were well and truly on top and seemingly in control, when Punjab decided to stage a comeback. First, through an 80-run stand between skipper Pankaj Dharmani (33) and Ravinder Singh (64), and later, a century stand between Ankur Kakkar (59) and Ravneet Ricky (64). Despite these partnerships, Punjab were still only scoring at 4.5 an over. Until, that is tailenders VRV Singh and Gagandeep Singh decided to use the long handle. The two put on as many as 87 off the final 10 overs. VRV ended the innings with a massive six off Narwal to finish unbeaten on a 12-ball 30. 275 was a target that was expected to test Delhi's batting. Punjab have one of the best new-ball attacks led by the venomous VRV and ably assisted by the tireless Gagandeep. But nothing seemed to work for either on Thursday. In fact, it was more a case of everything working for Chopra and Dhawan. The two started cautiously, scoring at 4.40 an over till the 10th, and then, as if magically, shifted gears. On a wicket, which was bereft of any assistance for the bowlers, the duo added 82 in the next 10 and Delhi were on their way. While Dhawan started the stronger, Chopra, after a brief lull, suddenly exploded with a series of delightfully struck hits to the fence. Slowly but surely, the futility of attempting to get a wicket was dawning on the Punjab bowlers. Their shoulders were drooping and defeat seemed a foregone conclusion. Neither Chopra nor Dhawan were in any mood to slow down, and very soon, the only interest remaining in the match was who would reach his century first. Chopra inched ahead in that race, reaching his 100 with a trademark cover drive boundary - one of the 18 boundaries he smacked - while Dhawan got there with a savage pull. Then, as if to accentuate their dominance, Dhawan ended the game with a boundary - his 19th. Chopra pulls hamstring Just that little bit of sheen was taken off Delhi's win when Chopra pulled his hamstring and had to call for a runner. Though the opener lasted the entire innings, Delhi would be hoping he is fit and raring to go on Saturday. Vidarbha derail Railways in CZ one-dayers (by Sharad Deep in Kanpur) YOUNG VIDARBHA seem to have transformed them into a winning lot. In the Central Zone One-Day League for Vijay Hazare Trophy, they are turning out to be a strong side. Continuing their good run in the six-day tournament, Vidarbha on Thursday scored a convincing five-wicket win against Railways to remain a strong contender for a place for the knock-out. Railways with their third consecutive defeat in the five-team tournament lost all hopes of a knock-out berth with minus two points. The young brigade of Vidarbha displayed their strong courage to handle the rivals, which had stars like Murali Kartik and Sanjay Bangar. Chasing 185 to win on the batsmen friendly pitch of the Green Park Stadium, after struggling for some time Vidarbha romped home in 46.3 overs. Young left-hand batsman Ravi Jangid, who had scored a match-winning unbeaten 44 in the first match on Wednesday, began from where he had left. He cut, drove and pulled the Railways bowlers all around the ground. His unbeaten 87 run knock was a real treat to watch as he was striking the ball quite nicely. He faced just 97 balls to hit 13 eye-catching boundaries. At one moment Vidarbha were 3/55 and a close finish was looming large, but Jangid along with Ranji Paradkar (43,95b, 6x4) made the things easy for Vidarbha. They enjoyed a crucial 119-run fourth-wicket stand, which proved worthy at the end. Earlier, Railways had a shaky start as they lost three quick wickets for just four on the board in the fifth over. Skipper Kartik, who came as an opener, could make just one before giving a simple catch to A Paunikar off M Hashim. Thereafter, Sanjay Bangar and H Rawle also went back to pavilion in quick successions without opening their accounts. Opener Amit Pagnis (43, 77b, 5x4) and Mahesh Rawat (35, 60b, 4x4) tried their best to adorn the innings later. But, it was right-arm seamer Sandeep Singh, who halted their progress with his swinging deliveries. Pint-sized Deepak Yadav saved Railways from blushes as the reliable batsman struck a fine 65 in 80 balls with seven hits to the fence as Railways finished their innings at 184 after being sent to bat first. With this win, Vidarbha now have nine points in two matches. Friday is an off day in the tournament and on Saturday, UP would be playing Madhya Pradesh, while Rajasthan take on Vidarbha. The final round of league matches would be played on Sunday. Andhra score big win over Kerala The results from the fourth day of the Ranji one-day tournament. More... Ranji Trophy ODI tournament, 4th day Andhra score big win over Kerala Cricinfo staff February 28, 2008 The following are the summary of results from the fourth day of the Ranji Trophy one-day tournament South Zone Gnaneswara Rao slammed an unbeaten 159 to lead Andhra to a seven-wicket win over Kerala at the MRF Pachyappas Ground in Chennai. Rao also picked up three wickets as Kerala powered to 317 for 5 in their 50 overs. PV Manikantan top scored for Kerala with 84 and added 104 with PR Prem (76). Andhra's openers began the chase positively, adding 59 together. But two quick wickets fell and Rao came to the crease with his side still needing 255 more to win. He added 152 with D Kalyankrishna and another 105 with ASK Varma and chased the target with 15 balls to spare. Rao hit 11 fours and five sixes in his 122-ball knock. Despite centuries from J Arunkumar and Ajay Ratra, Goa fell five runs short in chasing Karnataka's 312 at the Guru Nanak College Ground in Chennai. R Vinaykumar top scored for Karnataka with 84 and then took four wickets as Goa were bowled out in the penultimate ball of the match. Ratra joined Arunkumar at the crease with Goa at 82 for 3. The two added 141 together off just 134 balls. Goa were comfortably placed at 291 for 4 when they lost five wickets for six runs. The required 15 was too much for the last-wicket pair and Vinaykumar bowled Rohit Asnodkar for a duck to wrap of the game. M Vijay scored 108 in Tamil Nadu's two-wicket win over Hyderabad at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College Ground in Chennai. TN lost eight wickets and took 49 overs to chase Hyderabad's modest 236, which was built upon Abhinav Kumar's 93. TN's second highest score was R Ramkumar's 37. C Ganapathy and R Ashiwn picked up three wickets each in Hyderabad's innings.

Too many flatbeds and small grounds Remember when the BCCI made comments about more sporting pitches in India and all that rot a few years back? Would be nice if they applied it to the Ranji one dayers as well. The number of massively high scoring games is remarkable. South Zone: Andhra v Goa at Chennai - Feb 27, 2008 Goa won by 2 wickets (with 4 balls remaining) Andhra 291/8 (50 ov); Goa 293/8 (49.2 ov) West Zone: Baroda v Mumbai at Poona - Feb 27, 2008 Mumbai won by 3 wickets (with 9 balls remaining) Baroda 357/7 (50 ov); Mumbai 358/7 (48.3 ov) West Zone: Gujarat v Maharashtra at Pune - Feb 27, 2008 Maharashtra won by 5 runs Maharashtra 326/9 (50 ov); Gujarat 321/7 (50 ov) North Zone: Delhi v Punjab at Delhi - Feb 28, 2008 Delhi won by 10 wickets (with 39 balls remaining) Punjab 274/8 (50 ov); Delhi 277/0 (43.3 ov) West Zone: Maharashtra v Saurashtra at Pune - Feb 28, 2008 Maharashtra won by 5 wickets (with 11 balls remaining) Saurashtra 327/5 (50 ov); Maharashtra 328/5 (48.1 ov) South Zone: Andhra v Kerala at Chennai - Feb 29, 2008 Andhra won by 7 wickets (with 15 balls remaining) Kerala 317/5 (50 ov); Andhra 320/3 (47.3 ov) South Zone: Goa v Karnataka at Chennai - Feb 29, 2008 Karnataka won by 5 runs Karnataka 312/9 (50 ov); Goa 307 (49.5 ov) And that's from three days of cricket. While I've not seen the games, I can't imagine the pitches are very good if Venugopal Rao can smash a hundred in 79 balls or the slowest batsman in Indian cricket, Shitanshu Kotak can belt 72 in 55 balls. Makes selection a ridiculous challenge when every other batsman's able to belt a quickfire cameo knock with a ridiculous strike rate, and almost every single bowler looks atrocious with economy rates ranging from 5 to 7.

Well, nothing wrong with that as a one off, especially given two very good openers - but in this case, the worrying thing is that it's overshadowed by even bigger run gluts. After all, 277 in 43 overs would on its own be considered an outstanding run chase, but then what about 320 in 47, 328 in 48 or 358 in 49?

exactly i was about to mention that.. that mumbai game result and other gamez are concern to me too.. i mean in each and every game u are seeing 300 being raised.. it's good to see batterz having ability to chase, but it sucks to see Bowlerz being taken apart too.. i mean 357 is a bloody massive chase.. where are the bowlerz.. where is the life in the bloody pitch.. 5050 is turning out to be 2020 affair

Ranji One-dayers: Day 4 Delhi continues winning form while left-armers sunil Joshi, Appanna star in 132-run win for Karnataka, HT brings rhe Ranji Roundup. More... Ranji One-dayers: Day 4 Hindustan Times March 01, 2008 First Published: 22:54 IST(1/3/2008) Last Updated: 23:05 IST(1/3/2008) Print Email IM on Yahoo Add to Del.icio.us Bowlers continue Delhi's dominance (by-Arjun Sen in New Delhi) Delhi have an air of invincibility around them at the moment. Every member of the squad seems certain of his duties in creating a winning outfit, and just about everything is falling in pace without any glitches whatsoever. And this seamless transition from perennial underachievers to unbeatable champions was on show once again on Saturday. Delhi won their third straight match in the North Zone Ranji one-dayers, beating Himachal Pradesh by eight wickets and qualify for the knockouts. On an unusually hot February afternoon, the hosts, chasing 161, took only 35.3 overs to get there. Led by half-centuries from Shikhar Dhawan (70) and Mayank Tehlan (45), Delhi also accrued a bonus point from the game. Like the last match against Punjab, Delhi's top-order came good against HP too. They knocked off the runs without too much of an effort and continue this amazing run of victories. But unlike the last game, Saturday's chase was made easier by a very disciplined bowling effort. Delhi's new ball duo of Parwinder Awana (4/30) and Amit Bhandari (2/24) found an amazing amount of assistance and carry on a Kotla wicket, which before this game, had been the perfect batting track. The two ran through the HP line-up, reducing them to 21/4 in just eight overs. Awana, who had been taken to the cleaners by the Punjab batsmen in the last match, reveled in the responsibility of being handed the new ball. It took him only three deliveries to get the first of his four wickets, castling Hemant Dogra with one that held its line after pitching. The opener decided to let it go, only to hear the death knell from behind. It was Bhandari's turn to get into the act next. The experienced seamer removed both the dangerous Paras Dogra (0) and Vikramjeet Malik (1) in the fifth over to throw the visitors into all kinds of trouble. Two more quick wickets - NS Negi's first and Awana's third - exacerbated HP's already fragile position and left them staring at a humiliating loss. 32/6 became 40/7 when Awana had HP skipper Ajay Mannu caught at gully for a duck. Though a 33-run stand between Mukesh Sharma (84*) and Sarandeep Singh (11) followed that wicket, Rajat Bhatia (1/27) trapped a shuffling Sarandeep right in front, while offie Suhail Sharma took a sharp return catch to send Vishal Bhatia back. These two quick wickets looked to have all but end HP's hopes of a fighting total. Or that's what Delhi had hoped, anyway. Mukesh, along with No. 11 Ashok Thakur, then put on a gritty 72-run unbeaten partnership for the last wicket off 29 overs to finish their innings on a high. That joy however did not last long. Despite the absence of an in-form Aakash Chopra from the opening slot - the pulled hamstring hampered his running - Delhi raced to victory. Dhawan was his usual aggressive self, while Tehlan started slow but quickly built up steam. The two put on 110 before Dhawan was caught at extra cover off Sarandeep. Skipper Mithun Manhas and Bhatia knocked off the remaining runs without any trouble. Delhi are on their way down South for the knockouts, and judging by the form they are in, they could end up on top there too. But before that, it's Haryana on Monday. MP through to knock-out at UP's expense (by-Sharad Deep in Kanpur) LAST SEASON Madhya Pradesh had missed the knock-out berth by just two points, but this time around they appeared a determined lot right from the beginning. On Saturday, they proved their supremacy in the Central Zone Inter-state one-day tournament for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, outplaying defending zonal champions Uttar Pradesh by 27 runs, at the Green Park Stadium here. The Mohammed Kaif-led UP batsmen did not apply themselves on a perfect batting pitch and looked a mediocre lot before a disciplined bowling attack from MP. MP fielders too gave good support to the bowlers and didn't allow UP batsmen to free their arms while chasing a modest 209 in 50 overs. Barring young keeper-batsman Eklavya Dwivedi and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, no other batsman could put up any sort of resistance against the MP bowlers. Kaif was a disappointment as he was trapped lbw for two by Shantanu Pitre in the 23rd over. However, the young Dwivedi displayed good temperament and, after taking two stunning catches earlier during the day, he hit the highest score for UP (42 off 85 balls with six hits to the fence). Bhuvaneshwar, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 30. MP seamer Rajesh Kanojiya did the maximum damage, bagging 3 for 35 as UP were bundled out for 181. Things looked difficult for UP batsmen right from the start as they could score just 50 in 19.3 overs and crossed the 100-run mark in the 31st over. MP collected four points from this match and took their points' tally to 13 from four matches. UP have just five points from three matches. Earlier, MP despite a four-wicket burst by lanky seamer Shailendra Singh Senger posted a challenging 202 in 49.3 overs. Playing only his second first-class match, Senger came up with a fine show of seam bowling, edging opener Naman Ojha (4) into the safe hands of Ravikant Shukla in the fourth over. But, thereafter Himalaya Sagar (47, 67b, 8x4) and Jatin Saxena (29, 45b, 3x4) steadied the innings. In down the order, Shabad Khyan (33, 46b, 4x4) and Harpreet Singh (27, 55b, 3x4) and Rajesh Kanojiya (19, 17b, 3x4) chipped in useful runs, which helped MP cross the 200-run mark. Besides Senger, Team India seamer Rudra Pratap Singh on his comeback trail took 2/31, while orthodox spinner Praveen Gupta also had 2/40. On Sunday, Railways take on Rajasthan, at the Green Park Stadium, while UP lock horns with Vidarbha in the last league match, at the Kamla Club Ground. Punjab beat J&K to register win New Delhi: Punjab beat J&K in their third match of the Ranji Trophy one-day tournament played at the Harbax Stadium on Saturday. Punjab batting clicked to garner a healthy 259 for five. Mayank Sidhana (62), Pankaj Dharmani (52) and Uday Kaul (51 not out) struck half-centuries, while Karan Goel contributed a useful 43. In reply to this, skipper Samiullah Beigh (61) and Zahoor Sofi (35) led the J&K run chase, but their efforts were not enough to overhaul the Punjab total. J&K managed 222 for eight in 50 overs as Manpreet Singh picked up three wickets for Punjab. Brief Scores: Punjab 259 for 5 (M Sidhana 62, P Dharmani 52, U Kaul 51 not out, Karan Goel 43) vs J&K 222 for 8 (S Beigh 61, Z Sofi 35, M Singh 3-37). Amardeep shines in Haryana win New Delhi: In the match played between Haryana and Services at Palam Ground, impressive knocks by Amardeep Sonkar (73) and Sachin Rana (48) helped Haryana to reach 232 for seven in 50 overs. Haryana bowlers Amardeep Sonkar (3/29) and Amit Mishra (3/38) shared six wickets between them to thwart Services' march. Meanwhile, Tahir Khan (75) and Soumik Chatterjee (45) were the major scorers for Services, who were all out for 196 in 47.3 overs. Brief scores: Haryana 232 for 7 (A Sonkar 73, S Rana 48) vs Services 196 all-out (T Khan 75, S Chatterjee 45; A Sonkar 3-29, A Mishra 3-38). Spirited Vidarbha too make it to knock-out (by-Sharad Deep in Kanpur) SPIRITED VIDARBHA continued their good run in the Central Zone Inter-State One-Day Tournament for the Vijay Hazare Trophy here on Saturday, scoring a thumping six-wicket win over Rajasthan to make it to the knock-out with 13 points. Opener Faiz Fazal (67, 109b, 7x4, 16) and Alind Naidu (59, 84b, 6x4) made Rajasthan's total of 201 runs quite small with their fascinating batting display, a the Kamla Club Ground. Now, Vidarbha's last match against host Uttar Pradesh on Sunday will decide the leader of the zone as Madhya Pradesh too have 13 points, but in four matches. Sandip Singh and Mohd Hashim destroyed the Rajasthan's batting line-up with three wickets each after they chose to bat first. Nikhil Doru (55, 5x4) and Sumit Khatri (51, 2x4, 1x6) made good efforts to help side post a good challenge for the Vidarbha, but in vain. Pankaj Singh too struck 31 in 29 balls with one four and a six. Vidarbha though lost opener Amit Paunikar (1) in the very fifth over, Fazal and Naidu then went on adding 118 runs for the second-wicket to design the innings for team's comfortable win. Bengal win with bonus point (by-Nilankur Das in Guwahati) BENGAL SKIPPER Laxmi Ratan Shukla's poor luck with the toss is turning out to be a boon for his team as far as the ongoing East Zone One-dayers are concerned. Like in the opener against Assam, when the hosts' skipper Sadagoppan Ramesh called right and chose to bat only to see Bengal's tried and tested new-ball pair of Ranadeb Bose and Shib Sankar Paul immediately peg them on the back foot, on Saturday too, Tripura skipper Rajesh Banik's decision to bat first, killed the match in the first session itself. On a much better wicket at the Nehru Stadium compared to Maligaon, Tripura managed 167 in their 50 overs, 20 more than what Assam had garnered against Bengal in the first. And yet again Bengal's top three batsmen were good enough for an eight-wicket win with yet another bonus point. And yet again opener Arindam Das put a price tag to his wicket with a 75 off 88 balls before getting caught at the square-leg boundary trying to go for a second six. Anustup Majumdar too played the way he did in the last match and got to his 50 before getting caught in the deep. In the other match, Jharkhand after losing to Tripura in the opener, came back strongly to beat Orissa by 96 runs and earn a bonus point at the North-East Frontier Railway Stadium in Maligaon. That leaves Orissa on 7 points from three matches and Jharkhand have five points from two. Tripura who too have played three matches have 3. SCORECARD Tripura: 167 for 9 in 50 overs (S Choudhury 40, R Datta 41, T Chanda 30; R Bose 4-54, SS Paul 1-24) vs Bengal 173 for 2 in 33 overs (A Majumdar 61, A Das 75). Bengal won by 8 wickets. Jharkhand: 261/9 (Subrata Ghosh 69, Ishank Jaggi 65, Amir Hashmi 40, Paresh Patel 5/41) vs Orissa 165 in 37.3 ovs (Haladhar Das 35, Sunny Gupta 3/28, Shahid Khan 2/19). Jharkhand won by 96 runs. Karnataka thrive on left turns (by- G Krishnan in Chennai) LEFT-ARM SPINNERS, 37-year-old Sunil Joshi (2 for 8) and 19-year-old KP Appanna (4 for 8) shared six wickets among them to help Karnataka defeat Kerala by a bonus point and draw level with hosts Tamil Nadu on 18 points after four rounds of the South Zone One-day tournament for the Subbiah Pillai Trophy here. At the SRMC College grounds on Friday, Karnataka, defending 247, bundled out Kerala for 115 in 26.1 overs to earn a bonus point. The last league match between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on Monday will decide the title winners, though both have advanced to the all-India knock-out tournament for the Premier Cup to be held in Visakhapatnam in the first half of April. Tamil Nadu missed the bonus point that would have given them a one-point lead going into Monday's virtual final as they took 42.3 overs to overhaul Andhra's 292 with five wickets in hand. Murali Vijay (100) scored his second hundred in as many days while left-handed Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan (111) scored his second century of the tournament as TN made a mockery of the Andhra bowling on a pitch that had runs written all over it. It will be on the same pitch that the Monday's tournament decider between TN and Karnataka will be played. Even as Vijay and Vidyut were building their third wicket partnership that was eventually worth 184 in 154 balls, Andhra off-spinner Hemal Watekar was called for throwing by square leg umpire Yeshwant Barde. It was juts a one-off incident. SCORECARD At SRMC: Karnataka: 247 all out in 49.2 overs (CM Gautham 76, C Raghu 42, Devraj Patil 40; Prashant Parameswaran 6-35) bt Kerala: 115 all out in 26.1 overs (Sreekumar Nair 37; S Joshi 2-8, KP Appanna 4-8). Karnataka: 5 pts; Kerala: minus-1. At Gurunanak College grounds: Andhra: 292 all out in 48.3 overs (H Watekar 71, ASK Verma 75, AG Pradeep 73) lost to TN: 295 for 5 in 42.3 overs (M Vijay 100, S Vidyut 111). TN: 4 pts; Andhra: 0. At CPT-IP: Hyderabad: 284 for 8 in 50 overs (Arjun Yadav 54, S Anoop Pai 102) bt Goa: 222 all out in 47.2 overs (S Asnodkar 64, Ajay Ratra 63; Md Shakeer 4-52, Ravi Teja 3-24). Hyderabad: 4; Goa: 0. Mumbai in a tight corner (by- K R Guruprasad in Pune) MUMBAI HAVE an uphill task at hand. They have to win both their remaining matches, beginning with their game against Saurashtra on Sunday, to stay alive in the West Zone one-dayers for the Ramakant Desai Trophy. And they might have to do it without captain Amol Muzumdar, who sprained his ankle when he tripped and fell during nets at the Deccan Gymkhana here on Saturday. Limping off the ground, Muzumdar said, "I am not really sure if I will be able to play tomorrow. I am going for a medical check-up and should get the result by evening. I will decide then." The injury only adds to Muzumdar's woes. He got out for a duck against Gujarat, a match that Mumbai lost by 46 runs, and was out for 15 against Baroda. Both times, he got out trying unorthodox shots. And Muzumdar's failure is just part of the problem the Mumbai middle-order, yet to come good in the tournament, is facing. "Well, I have to start with my own batting," Muzumdar said. "I know both the shots I played (and got out) were not on. We have to be a bit more careful." About the middle-order failure, Mumbai coach Praveen Amre said, "We may have to go for a shuffle in the batting order." However, he did not disclose what the change could be. Mumbai have had a mixed bag so far in the tournament. They had a huge win, chasing 357 against Baroda, but floundered against Gujarat. Wasim Jaffer scored an unbeaten 178 in the first match and was run out in the next, when he had just started to look threatening. Amre said that it was one of the reasons why they lost against Gujarat. "Wasim's run out and that of Abhishek Nayar proved a bit too much for us." Muzumdar said that it was important to look forward to their next matches. Mumbai would once again look to their in-form openers Jaffer and Ajinkya Rahane to get them off to a good start. On these batting tracks with smaller boundaries, teams have often chased down 300-plus targets with ease. And both sides would rely heavily on their batsmen to deliver the goods. Saurashtra failed to defend 327 against Maharashtra in their previous game. And they too face a must-win situation now. "Our bowling is a bit inexperienced," Saurashtra coach Debu Mitra said. "Once our bowlers learn with experience, we should be able to do well." In the other match here, Gujarat will take on Baroda at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana here on Sunday. Guajart have a win against Mumbai and have lost to Maharashtra, while Baroda have lost to Mumbai in the only match they have played so far.

Actually, it isnt that difficult to spot a world-class batsman from a crowd of also rans.A trained and experienced eye can spot a genuine talent, irrespective of their performance. But the OP makes a good point, with regards to these numbers being so misleading. If we are to go purely based on FC numbers, then we will continue to have mediocre players Vikram Rathore, Vijay Bharadwaj, Sujith Somasundar, who piled on mountain load of runs against pedestrian bowling attacks on pitches that resemble interstates. Every selector must make it a point to see as many FC matches as they can, so that they can spot international class talent. And Kudos to Dilip Vengsarkar with regards to this. I have come to know that he makes it a point to see all levels of cricket, whenever he can afford to do so. India has unearthed some terrific talents under his tenure.

The day 4 round-up of the Ranji One dayers by HT has been way better than what cricinfo provided. I hope, HT keeps on doing the round-up. It is detailed and there is everything there which you want to know! A big  to HT.
I have been seeing some Ranji ODI games in Chennai and have seen some TN and Hyderabad players last 2 games. It was a fantastic experience visiting inter-state games after a long time and I spoke to many of the Chennai and Hyderabad youngsters on many things regarding the game in today's context of tests/ODIs /IPL/ICL , I shall write a match report for these two days, I am going to the final as well between TN and Karnataka.

Vidyut and Vijay power TN to easy win The results from the fifth day of the Ranji one-day tournament. More... Ranji Trophy OD tournament, 5th day Vidyut and Vijay power TN to easy win Cricinfo staff March 1, 2008 The following are the summary of results from the fifth day of the Ranji Trophy one-day tournament South Zone M Vijay's second century in two games, along with S Vidyut's hundred allowed Tamil Nadu to chase Andhra's 292 with more than seven overs to spare at the Guru Nanak College Ground in Chennai. Half-centuries from Hemal Watekar, ASK Varma and AG Pradeep took Andhra to their reasonably competitive total. But Vijay and Vidyut's 184-run partnership, chasing at nearly seven an over, took the game away from Andhra. Ravi Teja and Mohammad Shakeer shared seven wickets between them to bowl out Goa for 222 and secure a 62-run win for Hyderabad at the Central Polytechnic India Pistons Ground in Chennai. Anoop Pai scored his maiden List A century and added 110 with Arjun Yadav (54) to take Hyderabad to 284. Goa's openers gave their side an 85-run start but then Shakeer, a legspinner, dealt a triple-blow and picked up three wickets for 13 runs. Ajay Ratra, who got a century in Goa's previous game against Karnataka, scored a fifty, but it was to be in a losing cause yet again. Kerala collapsed to a 132-run loss against Karnataka at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College Ground in Chennai. KP Appanna bowled an incredible spell of 3-0-8-4 as Kerala lost their last seven wickets for 15 runs. Opener CM Gautam scored his first List A half-century but no other Karnataka batsman scored more than 42 as Prasanth Parmeswaran, a right-arm medium bowler, playing only his second match, took 6 for 35 to bowl them out for 247. East Zone Ranadeb Bose took 4 for 54 as Bengal restricted Tripura to 167 and then chased the target in 33 overs to gain a bonus point at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. Tripura lost their first three wickets with only five on the scoreboard and even a brief revival led by Rajib Datta and Timir Chanda's 68-run partnership wasn't going to be enough for them to post a defendable total. The Bengal openers, Anustup Majumdar and Arindam Das, helped themselves to half-centuries and when Arindam Das was caught for 75, Bengal needed only a run to finish things off. Debabrata Das wrapped it up with a six. Jharkhand scored a 96-run win over Orissa by bowling them out for 165 at the North-East Frontier Railway Stadium in Guwahati. Sunny Gupta and Shahid Khan took five wickets between them as no Orissa batsman scored more than 35. Earlier, Subroto Ghosh and Ishank Jaggi added 139 together to boost Jharkhand's total. Left-arm spinner Paresh Patel got his first five-wicket haul but without any support from the Orissa batsmen, his efforts went in vain. North Zone Parvinder Awana took a career-best 4 for 30 as Delhi beat Himachal Pradesh by eight wickets at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Himachal managed to reach only 160 on the back of Mukesh Sharma's patient and unbeaten 84 as the rest of the batting line-up proceeded to disintegrate. Delhi, who had chased Punjab's 274 without losing a wicket, needed only 35.3 overs to secure a win along with a bonus point. Amit Mishra and Amaradeep Sonkar took three wickets each to bowl out Services for 196 and hand Haryana a 36-run win at the Palam A Ground in Delhi. Sonkar also starred with the bat, scoring 73 and adding 61 with Sachin Rana (48). For Services opener Tahir Khan battled for a 128-ball 75 but received little support from his team-mates in chasing the modest target. Soomik Chatarjee chipped in with 45 and added 82 with Tahir but it wasn't enough as the last six Services wickets fell for 24 runs. Samiullah Beigh's half-century and efforts to rally the lower order while chasing 260 against Punjab were not enough to secure a win for Jammu & Kashmir at the Harbax Singh Stadium in Delhi. Pankaj Dharmani, Uday Kaul and Mayank Sidhana scored half-centuries for Punjab after which Manpreet Gony and VRV Singh removed the top order cheaply. Beigh's resistance and 58-run partnership with Raman Dutta only prolonged J&K's innings, with the target far out their reach.

Baroda and Mumbai gain big wins The results from the sixth day of the Ranji one-day tournament. More... Ranji Trophy OD tournament, 6th day Baroda and Mumbai gain big wins Cricinfo staff March 2, 2008 The following are the summary of results from the sixth day of the Ranji Trophy one-day tournament West Zone An all-round performance gave Baroda a big win with a bonus point over Gujarat at the Hindu Gymkhana Ground in Pune. Yusuf Pathan hit a furious 38-ball 92 and added 127 runs with Azharuddin Bilakhia after which Rajesh Pawar contributed some lower-order fireworks to take Baroda to 355. Gujarat's chase was led by captain Parthiv Patel (61) and Priyank Panchal (65), who added 82 together for the second wicket. But then three wickets fell for 22 runs and the target was too much for Gujarat's middle order to chase. Ketan Panchal, Baroda's right-arm fast-medium bowler, took his career-best 5 for 20 as Gujarat were bowled out for 194 inside 35 overs. Debutant medium-pacer Sumit Singh picked up two wickets. A similar story was played out in Mumbai's 115-run win over Saurashtra at the Deccan Gymkhana Ground in Pune. Abhishek Nayar cracked his maiden List A century and, along with Wasim Jaffer, (90) took Mumbai to 296 in their 50 overs. Saurashtra showed no sign of even attempting a chase, losing four wickets for 29 runs in the first eight overs. Ajit Agarkar and Usman Malvi shared five wickets between them and Saurashtra were bowled out for 144 in 35 overs. Shitanshu Kotak top scored for Saurashtra with 43.

Played at Poona Young Cricketers Hindu Gymkhana Ground, Pune, on 3 March 2008 (50-over match) I've never heard of this ground. Why are our List A matches played at these grounds which will certainly have poor outfield amd smaller sizes? Why are these matches not played at regular grounds?
