Zakhmi
'I want India to be No.1 team in the world' Mumbai: The Dilip Vengsarkar-led selection committee has been applauded for the recent success of the Indian cricket team in Australia. Initially, they had been criticised for selecting a young team for the tough tour Down Under. Vengsarkar spoke to CNN-IBN’s Roma Khanna and he's already looking forward to the next challenge. Dilip Vengsarkar: It was an absolutely outstanding performance by the boys. The entire team did extremely well and they made all of us proud. Roma Khanna: How difficult was it for you initially, as there was a lot of pressure on you when you dropped some of seniors in the side and you got completely young , fresh side into this tournament. What was the idea behind getting them and playing them in Australia? Dilip Vengsarkar: They were ready to play in Australia You have to take some chances with your players and I think the entire selection committee believed in them. Roma Khanna: Anything for the Test series, the future - are you looking at getting some more youngsters into this Test side? Dilip Vengsarkar: Test, One-Dayers and Twenty20 are totally different games. You can't mix the three formats. The Test team also did very well in Australia and there are some players - some experienced players who did extremely well. But then, let's see what happens on 17th of this month. There are other four selectors also. We will sit down and pick the best combination. Roma Khanna: This time around, what are the targets that you have set for yourself while picking up the sides in the future? Dilip Vengsarkar: India-South Africa is an important series for us. And if we win this series then we would be closing the gap on Australia, who are No. 1 in the world. Roma Khanna: So is that going to be the key for you when you pick the side for South Africa? Dilip Vengsarkar: Yes, absolutely. That is going to be the key and I want them to be the No. 1 team in the world, very soon. Link to comment
