Eng appears to be planning ahead already

While planning laggard and trend follower Team India debates on captaincy matters where candidates are likely to be 36+ in 2023, Eng appears to be thinking practically:

I think, Morgan will probably continue till T20 WC at the most.

India needs to invest in a young captain for LOIs or at least in T20s, where relatively young players are promoted (aged 30 or younger now)

he had a team that was well-suited for these conditions, but I think he will still be remembered as one of their best ever ODI captains

Eng is forward-looking. By trying to think ahead, it is not diminishing Morgan's achievements. He is one of the greatest ODI captains. 

 

"The question for him is what he wants to achieve here," Strauss said, "because he has climbed Everest. That is the question for all the players, because we have made mistakes in the past. We've won Ashes series and got to No.1 in the world and thought that was the end in itself.

Vice-captain Buttler has been in the middle of things in all formats. If Morgan were under 30, things could have been different. But what is positive is that Eng is asking the right questions. Contrast that with Ind where some fans want an older guy (than Kohli) to captain Ind when he is going to be 36 or more in 2023. And when only 35+ years old in the current squad is Dhoni, who, many feel, should have retired 2 years ago! Yuvraj retired now at 37 and we know how average (relatively speaking) his last few years were

Strauss appears to be a brilliant thinker. Wish Ind had a guardian like him. His advice to Stokes:

 

Andrew Strauss has urged Ben Stokes to keep his feet on the ground after the England all-rounder earned hero status with his role in their incredible World Cup final triumph.

 

Stokes scored 84 not out against New Zealand at Lord’s on Sunday to force a Super Over in which he and Jos Buttler pushed England towards their first World Cup crown.

 

Former England captain Strauss believes Stokes will be deluged with demands on his time and he warned the star not to be distracted by his sudden spike in popularity.

 

“What will be hard for Ben going forward is the levels of adulation he’ll receive,” Strauss said on Tuesday.
