Tests

 

  • 70s: Gavaskar, Boycott, V Richards, G Chappell, Lloyd (c), Sobers, Botham (exceptional in 70s), Knott, Roberts, Lillee, Chandra, & 12th man Thomson/Holding 
  • 80s: Greenidge, Haynes, Amarnath, M Crowe (c), Miandad, Border, Imran, Dujon, Hadlee, Marshall, Garner, & 12th man Qadir 
  • 90s: M Taylor (c), Gooch, Lara, Tendulkar, M Waugh, S Waugh, A Flower, Wasim, Warne, Ambrose, Donald, & 12th man Waqar 
  • 00s: Smith (c), Sehwag, Ponting, Sangakkara, Kallis, KP, Gilly, Bond, Steyn, Murali, McGrath, & 12th man Akhtar 

 

* there may be overlaps/exceptions .... which team has the edge?

A tough one! .... In tests, I mainly try to look at 3 things - top order, batting depth, and bowling attack, along with X factor. 

  • Top order: 70s - Gavaskar, Boycott, and Richards
  • Batting depth: 80s - Hadlee is at #9 (if teams get into 100/4 kind of situation, 80s has an advantage. Also if most chip in, they can still get good totals)
  • Bowling attack: More or less similar 
  • X factor: 70s - Richards, Sobers, Botham, Lillee, and Chandra (almost 50% of the 11)
