Gambit Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Tata Plans World's Largest Wimax Network The Indian telco plans a system of 3,000 base stations to deliver limited or full broadband service to 110 cities Tata Communications is planning the world's largest commercial Wimax rollout, with full coverage in 15 cities across India. The Indian telco has contracted US vendor Telsima to build the network, which it expects to capture 200,000 retail customers in 2009. The network of 3000 base stations will provide limited coverage for enterprises in 110 cities and full retail coverage in 15 major cities. The first phase will cover Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Cochin, Chandigarh, and Kolkata. Shankar Prasad, president of Tata Communications' retail unit, said the wireless technology allowed the company to deliver broadband services "in a cost-effective, decentralized manner in India where a majority of the country is not covered by wired infrastructure." India has just 3.1 million broadband customers out of a population of over 1.2 billion. Yankee Group chief strategy officer Berge Ayvazian said the Tata Wimax rollout would accelerate broadband adoption and boost the country's educational and economic development. Gambit Posted April 2, 2008 Author Posted April 2, 2008 Excellent news. Laying copper where there wasn't any would be time consuming and opting for a fiber network would be expensive. WiMax is easy to deploy and offers speeds upto 70 Mbps. Tata can also use this to offer mobile broadband without having to worry about waiting for the army to clear and then buy GSM 3G spectrum. :top:

coffee_rules Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 But WiMax is the wrong technology to go for. LTE is the way all networks are going to be in a few years. They should have stayed with 3G GSM or CDMA technologies (like Reliance) and then go for LTE (4G wireless) like the rest of the world.

Hope WiMax is better ... yea surprisingly mtnl and bsnl provide much better broadband service than other private broadband service such as tata ,sify atleast from my experience.Have been using mtnl for a while and the service is pretty good whereas the neighborhood cybercafe which uses sify broadband is always down most of the time or slow.
