Olympics honored- sachin will carry torch

Recommended Posts

New Delhi: Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar said on Monday he would be a part of the Beijing Olympic torch relay in Delhi on April 17. Tendulkar, however, refused to comment on the controversy surrounding the protests, but said that he was looking forward to carrying the torch. "It is a great honour for me. I grew up watching the Olympics and I am looking forward to carry the torch," Tendulkar told IANS. The Bejing Games, which will be held from Aug 8-24, has run into trouble following China's crackdown in Tibet. The Tibetans have been protesting for a free nation. On Sunday, thousands of protesters waving Tibetan flags and shouting "Shame on China" disrupted the London leg of the torch relay. Tibetans and other human rights groups are planning similar protests in New Delhi on the day of the torch relay next week to voice their anger against China's Tibetan policy. Fearing trouble from Tibetan protestors, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has already shortened the route of the Olympic torch relay. The original 8-9 km run from Red Fort to India Gate has been shortened to 2-3 km. Details of the redrawn route are being worked out. "The government has taken up the issue and I think all security concerns will be taken care of. We are also planning out how to host the relay and I am hopeful that we will carry it out unhindered," Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh Kalmadi said. National football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, a Buddhist, has refused to carry the Flame to show his solidarity with the Tibetans. Former All England champion Pullela Gopichand and long jumper Anju Bobby George, too, confirmed on Monday that they would participate in the torch relay. Earlier confirmations include athletes Milkha Singh and Gurbachan Singh Randhawa, shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhu, tennis player Leander Paes and actor Aamir Khan. As many as 80 prominent Indians will carry the torch in Delhi. Source: http://www.ibnlive.com/news/sachin-joins-olympic-relay-team-will-carry-torch/62835-5.html

The title reminds me of that Rajnikant joke where the cold is "Rajnikanted" as against Rajnikant catching cold! What's next: Rupee getting lucky 'coz Tendulkar found it?
Lol... You should read this then... ' Rajnikanth had a massive heart attack.... The heart lost' :D

Calcutta: It’s the Suresh Kalmadi-headed Indian Olympic Association (IOA) which approached the talismanic Sachin Tendulkar to carry the Olympic torch, which is at the centre of a raging controversy, not the other way round. “It’s around three weeks ago that the IOA sent a letter to Sachin, asking if he’d be available to carry the torch in New Delhi on April 17. Sachin was then in Chennai, preparing for the first Test (against South Africa)… “Sachin thought about it on coming back to Mumbai and it was last Friday, I think, that his secretary (Florence) called up Mr Kalmadi’s office and conveyed that he’d be available… At no time did Sachin either volunteer or personally telephone anybody,” wife Anjali told The Telegraph on Tuesday. Sachin was “undergoing treatment” for a groin strain (which has already kept him off cricket for well over a week) when one got through to his Bandra residence. While Anjali didn’t exactly say that Sachin’s upset, somebody else quite close to India’s No.1 sports superstar indicated as much. “The IOA has made it appear that Sachin’s desperate to carry the torch… That’s just not done and the IOA hasn’t at all been fair to him,” the person pointed out. Kalmadi had, on Monday, said: “It’s a matter of great pride that the torch would pass through India. There is a big rush among the sportspersons to be part of it (the torch relay). Sachin Tendulkar called up this morning and asked if we would like him to carry the torch…” Clearly, Kalmadi got it all very wrong and Sachin isn’t amused. India’s soccer captain Bhaichung Bhutia, it may be recalled, has (for “personal reasons”) declined to carry the torch.

Suresh Kalmaadi ought to be one of the biggest gan***s ever! If not the biggest. The ****(substiture your abuse of choice) has been at the helm of Indian Olympic Association forver. Dont quite know what he has done to be elected to the highest sports office of the land but I do know that he appears on every effing trip to Olympics and/or big sports events like Asiad. This is one glaring example how Marathi lobby has adversly affected Indian sports and I am no fan of using those two words - Marathi lobby - liberally.

Yep. The terms IOC president and Suresh Kalmadi seem to go hand in glove forvever. I am curious, has there been a different IOC President at all, ever ? :D Him and KPS Gill have lifetime presidency agreements with their respective organizations.
