Should Siraj play over Umesh in D/N test?

The ability to play swing by the batsmen was a very big issue too.

 

Moreover, Siraj is not a swing bowler in the mould of a Bhuvneshwar Kumar. I think Ishant of 2020 swings the ball more than Siraj.

 

Another factor is ... Aussies pitches will always offer some bounce for the quick bowlers and Australia does not have any genuine swing bowler either.

Actually bowling was sort of exposed in 2nd test.  There is no shame in admitting that the surface wouldn't suit hit the deck bowling.  We were pretty much in the game in 2nd test.  Had we taken early wickets.  But we indeed missed a swing bowler.  Their openers easily played our opening bowlers.  Umesh was wayward.  Shami & Bumrah couldn't extract any reasonable movement.

But we got dismissed for 120 odd in the 2nd innings, in conditions where scoring 220+ was expected. Our batters failed us. And this is what turned the match 

 

When you are chasing just 130 for victory in your known conditions ... it is not easy to stop a victory.

 

Nevertheless, Bumrah took 5 wickets in the match and Shami took 4. It was Umesh who could not sustain pressure after these 2.

 

The issue wasn't the lack of a swing bowler but the lack of a quality 3rd pacer and very poor batting against swing bowling by us.

 

We saw Bumrah swing the ball brilliantly in tests in the WI and in England. Ishant and Shami got good swing in those conditions too. 

 

But 2 of those 3 quicks were not fully match fit in the NZ test series and that was a big issue.

Ishant is probably better than both Shami & Bumrah when it comes to use New ball.  He was badly missed in that 2nd game I kinda agree here.  Even in the Pink ball match Ishant  was easily able to move the ball from get go but our other Indian pacers found it little tough initially even against BD batting. 

In England Shami was the weak link as an enforcer.  Bumrah was brilliant.  In my view our current bowling attack is more suitable to places like SA & Aus.  

If we need to consistently win in NZ & Eng we have to change tactics.  Agree that the batting was horrendous...  But we still need a swing bowler I think.  Ideal would have been to have a left armer but there ain't any. 

Bhuvi's fitness is not great & Siraj we'll see he has to play in Aus I think before we judge him.  Other options are Deepak Chahar who's a genuine swing bowler but not even in A team plans.
