Australia's bowling attack in 88 except for McDermott is really poor but WI attack is legendary. There is no comparison between that attack and what India played at the Gabba earlier this month. Marshall, Ambrose, Walsh all ended up with 350+ Test wickets and Patterson was extremely quick when he started his career. From India's attack at the Gabba, Natarajan and Thakur might never play Tests again which makes India's win much more memorable.

Australian team of 2020/21 had a superior bowling attack and I will argue that their batting also was better than the 1988 one. Steve Waugh wasn't a great in the 80's. So just David Boon and Allan Border were the two main batters for Australia. So India were an inferior team to WI of 1988 and they defeated a superior Aussie team in 2020/21.

You would have been surprised if that WI team did not win in that 1988 game. They were very strong.
