Where our next line of players stand

Just concluded SL short format series has been a good one in the sense it has given a chance to assess some of the players earmarked as the players who will replace our existing players in future . It has helped to identify guys who have much less chance of succeeding which otherwise would have remained unmasked .

Based on certain assumption about the skill sets need to have for certain slots , an attempt is made here as to who should be backed for which role .

1.The primary goal for India in short format is to align themselves to aggressive mode of play with a certain degree of consistency and selection should be driven by that criteria.

2. Openers should be able to use PP well.

3. Better players of Spin as top priority for MO slot along with decent vs Pace .Can change gears .

4. Spinners who can turn it both ways and use both variations often with control should be priority for spinner's Slot.

 

 A. Openers -- 

1.Shaw -

      > Showed Shot making ability esp. against Pace . 

      >  Aggressive in intent which suits overall goal as well current PP issue of India.

       >  Age on his side .

      >  Not so good against quality spin .

      >  Poor Fielder .

        Guy should backed fully for opener's role irrespective of what he did in SL .

         Play against in duckers is improving.  Does not attempt  hook always which is a good way to improve consistency. Still not clear how he will manage rib   

         cage  high pace attack.

        Improvement against quality spin ,selective aggression ,improvement in fielding & fitness will determine his success, . 

 

   B. Middle Order -- Better player of Spin should be priority along with ability to play pace as well . Can change gears .

       1.  SKY -   

            Ticks all the boxes , potentially best player of spin in India for short formats for me best choice for MO from 3 to 5 .

            Should be backed all the way in T20 & 50 overs . 

  

       2.  Kishan - 

           >  Better player of spin .

           >  Not 100%  sure against high pace attack.

              Not fully sold on him, but should be backed as a MO bat since we have so few players who can play spin better . 

 

    C.  Batsmen for multiple slots - Who can play opener or in MO.

 

         Padikkal - raw talent needs refinement . Since Opening slot may not be vacant for 2 years , need to back him for both roles.

            >  Plays spin decently.

            >  Can clear the ropes .

            >  Leftie and has a big reach which can be used well vs spin once gets confident .

 

  D. Spinners- 

        Rahul Chahar - One of the better spinners but needs refinement . Needs to develop & use Googly more often. 

 

  E.  Bowler with lower order batting --

       Deepak Chahar -   

        > Fitness seem to be an issue .

        >  Improve death bowling  

         > Need to improve range hitting .

            Can be groomed to replace Bhuvi.

  

    Feel only the above are worth investing for future . Will be disappointed if these 6 do not play successfully at international level in Short format.

 

One player who i think has a place in T20 for next couple of years is Varun C  though he was OK  in SL.  He seem to bowl defensive lengths - back of length . Need to bowl more good length stuff at around of middle/off & moving it both ways from there. Needs to improve away going ball with more degree of spin and use it more often. As of now most deliveries come in . Plus add change of pace .

He will be good if brings further improvement .

He is the only indian spinner we can use both to check runs as well wicket taker . A tight over at a critical phase of a T20 match can turn the match on its head. Plus he is not one dimensional so cannot line him up easily.

Need to be backed up for 2 years at least.

 

 

 Hope selectors arrange another such series vs may be BD or AFG  with another set of fringe players to test next set - 

 > We need to look among Mayank, Iyer as  MO options as they are supposed to be better than others against Spin.

 > Check Mavi, Prasidh,Tyagi, Gill .

Can someone list down series we have lost due to not playing with "aggressive approach" also list down the number of knockout matches lost due to this reason(which is kinda the only problem with our team) .

Coz i really don't think we have lost many, instead of aggressive approach try more to focus on playing in difficult conditions and I am sure we would win more knockout matches.
