Dhoni had an easy job to steal credit and escape criticism. However this got so bad that it has hurt his legacy.

 

Virat after captaining for 5 years still needs a guide and mentor on top of the coaching staff? Like him or hate him but that is a big insult to him. How does that help his confidence.

 

Rohit and other future leadership prospects: are we saying that they are not reliable enough to help out Kohli on the field

 

Shastri and team management. These guys have had some highs and lows and they are on their way out but instead of letting their contracts run out and start fresh, we have a mentor, major announcements of changing the coaches in the middle of the tournament etc. why should they care?

 

Overall BCCI trying to act oversmart and this whole mentor crap while may not be the main reason because at the end of the day what you do on the field matters. However this has made this debacle even worse.

They humiliated Duncan Fletcher the same way by installing team director Shastri.

Now it has come a whole cycle.

There is no way kohli/shashtri can over rule dhoni specifically since dhoni was brought in to sideline both of them 

 

Warner is not a good captain, willaimson etc dont play IPL with same focus as they play internationals (or indian players do)

 

What poor skillset are you talking about? How do players suddenly turn poor? Dhoni had a lot of say in team selection

Similarly shashtri is all but gone and has no power.   -   Pure Speculation -  A captain is in charge until the last day.  When a captain is taking a field he cannot be forced to play a team he doesn't want .  Kohli is stepping down but doesn't mean he wasn't in charge or had his say of playing 11

 

Dhoni was specifically brought in to curtail both of them, both had lost favor with BCCI and selectors    - Pure speculation and Your opinion -    Dhoni isn't sticking with the National team as far as I know - You cannot bring a mentor 10 days before a World Cup to make any significant impact on the team or bring any drastic changes in the politics within the team. 

 

"The truth is that the selectors wanted to send him back to India after he didn't bowl in the IPL, but MS Dhoni (appointed Team India mentor) vouched for his finishing skills," a source was quoted as saying by TOI."     -    This is from the report -  As per a "source"   .   These sources didn't know Pandya's bowling and fitness status for 2 years but they know about Dhoni backing Pandya within 7 days ? Quite suspicious.

What poor skillset are you talking about? How do players suddenly turn poor?  -     Rohit's ability to play Left hand seamers since CT 2017 is suspect.  Rohit's poor footwork is well documented when opening innings and against L hand seamers. Poor form as well.   Hardik Pandya not bowling for two years and terrible batting .   Pant's lack of rotating the strike and playing excessive dot balls and stupid slogs and getting out ,  Bhuvi bowling at 120 Ks .    There was nothing "sudden"  -   The weaknesses have existed since along time precisely why India hasn't won anything in ICC events for a long time.  India has no middle and explosive lower order batsman and no finishers.  India's weaknesses are more apparent in the T20 format more than anything else and it becomes apparent when you play with teams are much better than you in the T20 format. 

 

Pakistan is winning and playing well.  Does the credit goes to Hayden and Philander?  Did they magically teach Babar Azam / Rizwan to play and Philander transformed Afridi ? No ,   Hayden and Philander did no magic and Pakistan team playing well despite their coaches quitting right before the WC is because of skill set Pakistan started building 1 , 1.5 yrs ago -  they built themselves around T20 -   They are still poor in Tests and ODI but that's a different story.

 

Whether it's Dhoni/Sachin or any random folk ,  A mentor is like a garnish on top - You bring someone on board 10 days before a tourney just for a gesture and "feel-good" sentiment and that's about it.   

Your whole argument is based on Dhoni having the supreme power , making all the selection calls , calling all the shots and having him as responsible for the whole debacle  -  I disagree - I'd say he had the least role to play in this poor showing 

 

Let's Say Shastri has been the coach for 4 years or so with full power - 1000 odd days , Kohli has been the captain for few years with full control - 1000 days let's say , selectors been around for a long time , Dhoni became a mentor 10 days ago - Even if all the power - His share of responsibility should account to 0.01 % ? 

Do the simple math -   Who should be accountable ?
