Mentor Dhoni

I know he doesn't have big role in our worldcup exit but he was going to get huge credit if we would have won anything so here is thread on his mentorship. Earlier we used to reach semi finals & get knocked our due to choke by our top order but this how come we choked so early in the tournament? Did his take it till end mantra reflect in our batting?

how did it help in any way?

 

Dhoni had an easy job to steal credit and escape criticism. However this got so bad that it has hurt his legacy.

 

Virat after captaining for 5 years still needs a guide and mentor on top of the coaching staff? Like him or hate him but that is a big insult to him. How does that help his confidence.

 

Rohit and other future leadership prospects: are we saying that they are not reliable enough to help out Kohli on the field

 

Shastri and team management. These guys have had some highs and lows and they are on their way out but instead of letting their contracts run out and start fresh, we have a mentor, major announcements of changing the coaches in the middle of the tournament etc. why should they care?

 

Overall BCCI trying to act oversmart and this whole mentor crap while may not be the main reason because at the end of the day what you do on the field matters. However this has made this debacle even worse.

Dhoni could not care less about this Team. LOL . He was there for just extended vacation,I doubt he would have said yes to it if he had to travel with team from home...The guy was in UAE for ipl,said yes to nothing job. It was just a gimmick to hype India's preparation for WT20,He himself was failed T20 player and captain, captained shamelessly in 5 wt20 without winning and taking any accountability..

India didn't reach knockouts 4 times

 

2009, 2010, 2012, 2021

 

Dhoni was there in 3 of them as a player. Atleast in 2012 we exited due to run rate. Other 3 occasions we got creamed. One common thing was  Jadeja. Once he screwed with batting, once he screwed us with bowling. Now both.  He is our world T20 panauti.

His presence was to garner more publicity which has been accomplished. So all can calm down.

 

Dhoni will certainly be compensated by BCCI for this stint. Dhoni bashers will try to bash him over this for another 2 or 3 days and then will loosw focus. If you think this will impact his legacy, this is just a spec of dust on a mighty engine his PR agencies have built. They were able to wipe off huge dents like his 2019 WC debacle as if that didn't happen.

 

So I guess creating threads for his Mentor stint is just a waste of time.

 

Note: With Shastri leaving the office, it will not be a surprise if I start to see articles towards next year's IPL as how Dhoni was not heard during the first 2 matches and how he was able to motivate the team for the next 2 games.

What would you expect from Dhoni ?

When he's leading his Chennai team - He shows how he can win and rally his team and you can see his thinking.

 

This isn't Dhoni's team  - You cannot walk into a dressing room and spark any changes and build a team - this was more from him as a farewell gesture to the team 

 

TM did poor selection,  Shastri as a coach was clue less - Playing 11 had pure favoritism ,   Rohit cannot play Swing bowling ,  Pandya cannot bat or bowl ,   Pant is 5 dot balls and 1  Poor swing away from getting out 

 

Rahul chahar didn't play a single game , Pandya was given all the games on a platter ,  Bhuvi played one game, Ishan Kishan played on game , Ashwin played one game -    So essentially of a team of 15 players  -   4 Players played 1 game or less  -  This is comedic at best

 

Not sure what Dhoni could have done

Dude dhoni was given all the power, selectors wanted to send injured Pandya back but dhoni over ruled them and insisted on pandya.  So blaming TM for pandya is disingenuous

If you believe CSK tactics would work in international, dream on..dhoni tried that in t20 world cups from 2008 onwards and we got lotas

 So Dhoni who came last minute as a "mentor" - keyword being mentor here was given all the power? I'm sure this is hyperbolic. 

So TM, Kohli, Shastri threw all their power and plans in the air, tore off all their strategy and stepped aside just for Dhoni to come in all of a sudden and take charge and sit on the iron throne ? A bit exaggerated here 

Let alone mentor, let say Dhoni was made a coach -  any coach who takes over a team 10 days before a world cup event - would he have much effect on a team?  Not really. 

Pandya was insisted on by Dhoni - speculation at best.  And if indeed true to be a part of 15, Pandya in the playing 11 and persisting with him would be a choice for Kohli and Shastri. 

 

If India had won, giving credit to Dhoni would have been stupid as well. Dhoni could have gotten some credit purely for some tactical nuances but nothing more. The team played terrible in the middle - you can't shoot the coach for that. 

 

Not saying Dbonis tactics would work in T20, whichever format he is playing at present, he's delivering in that capacity. Just like Csk tactics wouldn't work in international matches, similarly Kane Williamson and Warner and other think tanks couldn't outfox CSK and win in IPL with their tactics but CSK with a bunch of older players won  - a lot more intangibles and factors in the IPL.  

 

Dhoni's value is as a tactician only. However 10 days before a tournament you can't have any impact.   Secondly, poor team selection, bowling order and batting order and on field thinking - that you can't blame on him. Poor skillset isn't on him.

Kohli was already sidelined and had zero power,  which is why he resigned. He was first over ruled on ahswin. Similarly shashtri is all but gone and has no power.

 

Dhoni was specifically brought in to curtail both of them, both had lost favor with BCCI and selectors 

 

The pandya one is not speculation, it was reported by every single major source

There is no way kohli/shashtri can over rule dhoni specifically since dhoni was brought in to sideline both of them 

 

Warner is not a good captain, willaimson etc dont play IPL with same focus as they play internationals (or indian players do)

 

What poor skillset are you talking about? How do players suddenly turn poor? Dhoni had a lot of say in team selection
