Great response to Pakistan Premier League proposal: PCB

Recommended Posts

All the Kenyan/Zimbabwean/Bangladeshi/Irish/Scottish et al are all excited with this news. Infact, they have started packing their bags and applied for Pakistani Visa because they are damn sure that other than them no one will be 'auctioned' or show an interest in PP HELL. On the other hand, big business magnets such as Raza calling card, Rooh Afza sharbat have shown interests in claiming a city based franchise.
:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: and it will played using the Pakistani favorite " Tape Ball " :two_thumbs_up:

Where are they going to get the money from? It is foolishness if they want to compete with IPL, which means indirectly competing with the Indian market. The franchises will have to borrow money from somewhere, then PCB will have to borrow money to pay their own players first, and then they don't have any money to pay the "foreign players." So, who are they going to call to come and play so that this will be an "international" league? Kenya, Zimbabwe, Bermuda. Ireland and Scotland wouldn't want to come to Pakistan.

Great response to PPL proposal: PCB Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board has got a tremendous response to buy franchise rights for teams in the planned Pakistan Premier League Twenty20 competition. A senior official of the Board said on Wednesday that the only thing holding up the organisation of the Pakistan edition of the successful Indian Premier League was finding a slot in the packed Future Tours Programme of the ICC. “The response from companies and organisations and even individuals to buy franchise rights or sponsor teams in the PPL have been beyond our expectations,” the official said. “We are trying to find a suitable slot in 2009 when teams are free and most players are available because we also want the involvement of overseas players,” he stated. The official said the Board had studied closely the IPL model and was confident of repeating the success in the PPL. The PCB official said Twenty20 cricket even at the domestic level had been a great success in Pakistan and it was, in fact, Pakistan which was among the first countries to launch a domestic Twenty20 tournament. He said the PPL would feature in the talks with prospective bidders for the media rights of Pakistan cricket for the next five years. “Obviously, the IPL is on a much bigger scale as India has a big commercial and marketing market. But we think the PPL can also be done successfully.” — PTI

Tremendous response to buy PPL teams: PCB http://cricket.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/3038484.cms KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board has got a tremendous response to buy franchise rights/sponsor teams in the planned Pakistan Premier League Twenty20 competition. A senior official of the Board on Wednesday said the only thing holding up the organisation of the Pakistan edition of the successful Indian Premier League was finding a slot in the packed Future Tours Programme of the International Cricket Council (ICC). "I can tell you this much the response from companies and organisations and even individuals to buy franchise rights or sponsor teams in the PPL have been beyond our expectations," the official said. "We are trying to find a suitable slot in 2009 when teams are free and most players are available because we also want the involvement of overseas players in the PPL," he stated. The official said the Board had studied closely the model for the IPL and was confident of repeating the same success in the PPL. "We want to follow the same concept of selling franchise and sponsorship rights of the participating city teams and selling the title and broadcast rights separately," he said. "The companies and organisations we have given a presentation too have shown great interest and want the involvement of some foreign players not on the scale of the IPL but to a big extent to make the PPL attractive and competitive for the people," he added. The PCB official said Twenty20 cricket even at the domestic level had been a great success in Pakistan and in fact it was Pakistan who were among the first countries to launch a domestic Twenty20 tournament. "The people are attracted to this form of the sport and we have had big crowds for our domestic Twenty20 event. But we want to hold the PPL on a bigger scale with more glitz and glamour," he said. "The companies, organisations and individuals are willing but first we have to find a suitable time slot to launch our product in a proper manner," he said. He said the PPL would feature in the talks with prospective bidders for the media rights of Pakistan cricket for the next five years. "Obviously, the IPL is on a much bigger scale as India has a big commercial and marketing market. But we think the PPL can also be done successfully."

Given the success of IPL and the emergence of PPL, APL & EPL, we are guaranteed an entire year full of T20s. In some sense the presence of so many leagues is good, they might eventually dilute the quality of this circus format, forcing it to die soon.

PCB think the players are out of their contracts then and wont be signing new IPL contracts? Teams dont want to go to Pakistan to play international matches PCB should just save the little bit of money they have and scrap the PPL plan

"Obviously, the IPL is on a much bigger scale as India has a big commercial and marketing market. But we think the PPL can also be done successfully." ↑ admitting supremacy on one side and trying to compete with no match...is unwise. just make them understand! ↓ All that glitters is not Gold - PPL

ANY T20 league that does not attract the best international talent is doomed to fail. IPL's success mantra has been the fact that the world's best have come at a single place and showcased their talent. The success of IPL is not only because its T20, its also coz the world's best have come and played in it. A T20 league in Pakistan may not end up in persuading the best international players to participate in it. That being the case, PPL will be condemned to being the poor step-sister of IPL. Niether will the quality of matches be that high, nor will it attract that much international media attention.

The t20 domestic competition in Pakistan had tremendous crowd following. Whether those were free tickets, I do not recall but the point to be noted is that it had a lot of fan following. I think Faisalabad won that tourney if my memory serves right. So they will have the fan following. Step two would be to influence int'l players for the league to have an international appeal. That could be a problem. If the PCB and the and franchise flash the cash, it may see some players turn to the league. This will be their biggest challenge. They may be able to rope in some int'l players but whether they will be able to get the superstars remains a question. The biggest deterrence will the security issue, whether it is a realistic threat or not, the perception of the outside world is that it is not a safe country. This will eventually be good for the domestic players as they will reap the rewards of higher pays. And the fans will be able to see more of the domestic players as there will be proper coverage of these domestic matches. There seems to big money on the line and every country wants to profit be it India, England, Australia, or Pakistan.

Good thoughts. With most countries (England, Australia, Pakistan) pondering about such a league, you gotta wonder about the following: 1) How can all these leagues fit in the international calendar ? If they all coincide, they will have to share the viewership & possibly lose TV revenues (esp, if they target international viewers) 2) How can they all fill up their leagues with quality players ? There are only a limited no. of international players of quality & all 4 leagues (if you add ICL, that makes it 5) cannot fillup their roster with big names. 3) How can they all sustain interest levels from spectators with so much T20 cricket played year around ? We've already seen the effect of overdosage of real cricket (Test, ODIs) vs Pakistan, on the biggest cricket fan base in the world. (People are already feeling the drag of IPL) 4) In the case of England, what will happen to county cricket ? I cant see PPL lasting more than a season, if it makes it past the blueprint, that is. Pakistan neither has the money to attract their own stars (leave alone international stars), nor is a safe place for running an international league. England may be able to launch such a league successfully, but I doubt they can sustain it, esp, given the conflict of interest with county cricket. One of them have to make way. I reckon T20 will die a slow death in England, after bulking the county players pay packet. That leaves us with APL (Aussie league). Only the APL can match the IPL, simply because Aussies have got big players to run a league on their own. IPL wouldnt be half as successful as it is today, without the big Aussie stars. These guys add so much legitimacy to the league. They also make the media follow IPL with interest. The likes of Ian Chappell & Peter Roebuck write about IPL, because of the likes of Shane Warne, McGrath, Gilly, Symonds et al playing in IPL. And given that Australia is a developed nation, many white cricketers may prefer to play there (if the pay is comparable), as the quality of life is better over there. Cricket Australia is also a capable of administering such a league. All this will eventually cause the already overpaid cricketers to be paid even more (as multiple leagues compete for a single player), causing them to retire in a hurry. I dont reckon, cricketers will any longer be motivated to bounce back from career threatening injuries to play Test cricket. Such days are gone. With easy money to be made in IPL & APL, with just one month worth of workload paying off a career worth salary, Test cricket is almost certain to be impacted in a big big way.

T20 is gonna bring the death of test cricket and ODI's everyone wants to start a T20 league this is really gonna mess things up either that or they will need to increase the size of IPL to accomodate more players and also allow other nations to profit from it
