Rotate players to preserve them, says Kirsten Agencies Posted online: Tuesday , June 24, 2008 at 1457 hrs IST Karachi, June 24: : With the cramped international cricket calendar becoming the norm, Indian coach Gary Kirsten made it clear on Tuesday that only a rotation system could deal with the increasing workload, particularly on bowlers. "A system is needed to be created, I think it will be unfair to ask a player to rest, he'll then also be worried that someone else was coming in his place, so I think a proper rotation policy should be implemented," he explained. "We have to be careful with the bowlers as there's lot of cricket at the moment and some of the guys have really played a lot this year. "We need to be careful; we need to monitor guys to make sure their physical fitness is good, we certainly do not expect all the bowlers to play throughout the year, we would rest our players," he said. India has already lost their top pace bowler S Sreesanth to a fitness problem as he had to pull out of the Asia Cup squad at the last moment and was replaced by the promising Manpreet Gony, who ironically came to the forefront in the Indian Premier League. Kirsten said he would look to try out different combinations wherever the team can afford it. "Players are fully aware that when you're representing your country every match is important and you guys (media people) know when we lose the game every one comes so hard on us... so we're working hard as we can to keep improving," he said. Kirsten, who took over as coach after the unceremonious exit of Greg Chappell in 2007, said he was encouraging the players to play the game in new ways. "I encourage players to come up with new ideas, new innovation, no shot making... so they keep trying to improve their game... and they keep on thinking how to play each batsman and each bowler," he added. Indian and Sri Lankan skippers Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Mahela Jayawardena had also spoken about the increasing workload and demands on players in the international cricket calendar on Monday. But they accepted that being professionals, cricketers were expected to cope with the workload and challenges of international cricket. Jayawardene stressed on the fact that every form of the game had its own importance and it would be wrong to say Twenty20 will overshadow Test or one-day cricket in the near future. Pakistan's Australian coach Geoff Lawson has also been working on a system to have a rotation policy for the bowlers because of the packed calendar. But fitness and other issues have kept top bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif most of the time since last year and this has increased the workload on the younger bowlers like Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir. Pakistani selectors have been working on giving more opportunities to younger bowlers who have done well on the domestic front in recent times. This has led to the discovery of some good pacers like Sohail Khan, Wahab Riaz and spinners, Saeed Ajmal and Mansoor Amjad.

rotating bowlers due to injury concerns Kirsten seeks rotation policy for injury-prone India India would want to preserve Ishant Sharma for the grueling season ahead © AFP The season has barely begun for India and the coach, Gary Kirsten, has already sounded out the need for a rotation system for the injury-prone fast bowlers. With Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan ruled out at start of the tournament and Irfan Pathan rested for the next two games with a side strain, all of a sudden the threatening pace-bowling attack doesn't look so impressive. There is no doubt the team is overworked and a big season follows - the Sri Lanka tour just after the Asia Cup, the Champions Trophy, home series against Australia and England, followed by tours of New Zealand and Pakistan. Looking at the schedule, it sounds silly to have somebody like Ishant Sharma playing almost every single insignificant ODI in the harshest of conditions. Kirsten, after a taxing three-hour training session at the National Bank of Punjab (NBP) Stadium, clarified to some extent the tired players' perspective. "The system needs to create that [rotation policy], and it is unfair to expect the player himself to ask to be rested as he is also worried if his replacement does well, then he will lose his place," Kirsten said. "So we need a rotation system in which if we rest a bowler, and if his replacement does well he still remains the No. 1 bowler and gets his place back. "Test cricket is tough with bowlers bowling around 25 overs a day in three to four Tests, and it is tough." This could see Ishant sitting out an odd game, just like he did against Bangladesh in Mirpur. "We have got to be careful with the bowlers, some of these guys have played a lot of cricket and we need to make sure that they are physically fresh, fit and ready." Kirsten said. "We certainly cannot expect every bowler to play throughout the year." It could lead to a similar scenario like that of resting Irfan even before an actual big injury happens. "He has got a little bit of stiffness, it's more of a precautionary break. We are not going to push him." Kirsten said. "We will most probably give him a break for the next couple of games so that the side strain heals well." Meanwhile, the Indian team practised pretty merrily for three hours under the harsh sun - that too about 13 hours after their previous training session finished. The batsmen hit big, and threatened to hit the journalists watching from the sidelines, with the white ball being difficult to spot during the day. Suresh Raina even broke a glass down the ground. Yusuf Pathan, in yesterday's practice session, worked on the reverse-sweep and switch-hit for about 20 minutes. "We are always looking at new ways of playing the game," Kirsten said. "Pick up new ideas, new shot-making, just trying to improve the game by five to 10%, and that can make all the difference. It is not something that he might do in the next game. It is some of the new things that we are trying to do, not just with him but with all the players. "We were doing this even before this thing came up [with Kevin Peitersen employing the shot against New Zealand]. We are trying things all the time and that's the way cricket is going. We are trying to innovate and that's the way it is."

Fruitful camp - Kumble Agrees with Dhoni on match schedules Upbeat about the series against Sri Lanka BANGALORE: Test skipper Anil Kumble looked confident and relaxed after a seven day conditioning camp for the Test specialists that concluded at the NCA here this afternoon. Speaking to the media, Kumble addressed the need for such a camp to bring the team together in the midst of a long break. “It was a good seven day camp. And we were lucky with the weather… for anywhere else in India with the rains there was little scope,” the skipper said. Kumble thanked the NCA and Dav Whatmore for all the facilities and assistance provided. “It was more of a relaxed camp wherein the purpose was to address each individual. We worked on skills and had exhaustive sessions on fitness. More importantly, we played together for some time and had a hit,” he added. On Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly giving the camp a miss, he said, “Sachin is in London and so is Sourav for different reasons. They are both very experienced cricketers and I’ve no problems with them opting out of this camp. They are seniors and know what is expected of them.” On Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s comments on the scheduling of the Asia Cup, Kumble was in agreement with the ODI captain. He said: “It’s very difficult to play back- to- back one day matches. It’s tough and demanding on the players.” On the ruling where batsmen could appeal against the unpire’s decision, he said: “It’s on experimental basis and in Sri Lanka we will have a closer look at this and then, maybe, make a comment on it.” Kumble was upbeat about the series against Sri Lanka. “We will have another camp at Chennai before departure as a unit,” he added. The skipper had words praise for aspirants like Gautham Gambir and Rohit Sharma. “It’s nice to have these players knocking at the doors of Test cricket. It’s a healthy sign and makes the others work that much harder.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's been a good seven-day camp for us: Kumble Bangalore (PTI): The Indian team's week-long camp for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour concluded here on Monday with skipper Anil Kumble expressing satisfaction with the practice and training. "It's been a good seven-day camp for all of us", Kumble told reporters. "It was important we got together and worked on our skills and ensured that we got a hit", he said. He said the the team for the Sri Lanka tour would be picked on July 8. Kumble said the players would again assemble in Chennai and practice for a couple of days before leaving for the island nation. On players chances of youngsters like Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma getting a Test call, Kumble said, "it's nice to have such a talent." He said Indian Test side has been doing exceptionally well as a unit in the last couple of tours. In the July 8 meeting, it would be figured out "what's the right combination to go to Sri Lanka". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So the team for SL test series is going to be chosen on 8th July? Sachin would have recovered completely by then and so too Sreeshanth. But what about Zaheer Khan? Has he recovered completely? I just hope that Ishant is fully fit till then. But what about Pathan? Would he have recovered by then?

i am not sure about pathan, but i would really wanna take praveen kumar to sri lanka. why not try him?? i mean on flat tracks, he was pretty useful in ranji trophy. he exceeded expectations of people who used to call hin "another trundler" on this forum. why not give him a test birth? and also i would not like to see Rohit sharma in test side as of now. rite now he should go back and play some FC cricket, whenever it starts in India. he should not be brough into test side rite away. infact there is hardly any room for him rite now. and i would really, really like to see Gambhir this time. he deserves his chance

chandan..what would be your ideal team for SL test series..i mean playing XI.. that would indicate...how many players are fit and in form..for SL..
If you go solely by my choice then, Sehwag Gambhir Dravid Sachin Ganguly Laxman Dhony Kumble (skipper) Bhajji Zaheer Ishant/Sree But I fear for Dhony. And I'm not sure how Zaheer and Sree will perform just coming after their injuries. Also I'm not sure if Ishant will remain fit till then. And for a change, I'd like to rest Yuvraj completely from the test team and would like to have a new middle order batsman as replacement. I'd also like to take Mishra as my third spinner. How about you?

your choice of players are good...we must not forget that we are going to SL..and they will prepare pitches for Murli and Mendis..two players who can turn the ball on glass... i think they will prepare pitches with low bounce to negate Kumble... and if i am not wrong...Yuvi is going to be operated upon aafter Asia cup..for his knee...not a confirmed news though... and even though Dhoni is playing Non-stop...this tour is important...and i would play him.. zaheer is our strike bowler...and on lifeless pitches ..his experience will come handy.. Munaf Patel could be useful on SL pitches where his tight L&L and bounce can come handy... ishant should be fine...and IMo will play a major role in SL...in tests at least.. even i would not want Piyush chawla for SL tour....Amit Mishra or Pragyan Ojha ...Ojhalooked good against pakistan in last game he played...i would give him a chance.. Top 7 pick themselves.. Sehwag Gambhir Dravid Sachin Ganguly Laxman Dhony Kumble Zaheer Amit Mishra / Pragyan Ojha( No Bhajji in my team..he is useless now) Ishant Sharma

the problem with Dhoni is that He is the captain of ODIs..and VC of Tests.. and we are not even trying second keeper for his replacement... if we are looking at P Patel..as a backup or KKD as his backup...then they should have been sent in asia cup as a keeper..and Dhoni should have played as specialist batsman..as he did in IPL..

dhoni should not play in test series...give him rest bring in kkd...
I hope you're not out of your minds? Resting from tests? One takes rest from ODIs or T20s, not tests which are the real form of cricket. And above all, the way Karthik's keeping has gone down, he is no replacement to Dhoni. Anyway, I could dig out some news about Zaheer Khan: LINK Just moving away from the Asia Cup for a moment, some of us who are in the mix in the Tests but not part of the ODIs are involved in a camp in Bangalore and it’s been a good three days so far. There’s been a bit of rain all throughout the country and it’s nice to go out and get a hit and a bowl in the middle. Net session So far the weather had held, with only the odd short interruption from the Bangalore rain. On Friday we had an open net session and it was good to see Zaheer Khan coming along well after injury. He bowled about 12 overs and is working up a good rhythm. Although we have been training and working on fitness the focus in this camp has been on core skills and we still have a good four days ahead of us. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is what Anil Kumble wrote on 28th of June. Hopefully Zaheer will recover in time for the SL test series.

Although I am not a massive fan of the BCCI's monopoly when it comes to cutting ties with the MRF Pace Foundation, it is good that they keep the Test specialists in training camps whilst the ODI team play. Working on core skills seems to be a good course of action as it is beginning to be established as the key to unlock strength in batting, bowling and throwing in cricket. Would be interested to see if Irfan Pathan works on core strength as I remember reading it in a physio's report on him and I do suspect it is why the visibly (ie, the biceps, the pecs) strongly built Pathan does not have much strength in his bowling. Nice to see that Zaheer Khan is working up a good rhythm. Although I have often statistically scrutinised him, and do not particularly enjoy watching him bowl, his performance in England showed a maturing as a spearhead who can hit a line and length consistently and yet be penetrative with his bounce. However, it will be interesting to see if his high impact jump and delivery stride do take a toll on his body in the long term. It would be a shame as an expected part of a veteran fast bowler is to remain fit and selected amongst the chaos of youngsters coming in and out of the team.

There is an ample pool of bowlers available for tests, as well as ODIs including newcomers like Praveen Kumar who can try to be the our version of Stuart Clark. Zaheer and Sreesanth will be back and VRV is available. Nehra also looked OK for most part and L. Balaji is giving his best to earn recall. M. Gony need some chance to prove his worth. RP is healthy and so is Ishant. we can pick 3 from this pool depending on who all are fit. Spinners - Chawla and Harbhajan are leading contenders, but Yusuf Pathan can bowl and bats a lot better than Harbhajan so Bhajji's ODI seat looks under threat.
