More... Zaheer doubtful for Lanka Test series Fri, Jul 4 01:35 AM ZAHEER KHAN, India's pace spearhead, could miss out on a part of the forthcoming three-Test series beginning in Sri Lanka on July 23 after being advised to play "at least two 3-4 day matches" to assess his fitness. Zaheer, who has been suffering from a recurring heel injury (plantar fascia) on his left foot, underwent rigorous training at the National Cricket Academy from June 21- June 30. The national selection panel will meet on July 8 to pick the squad for the Sri Lanka tour and the final decision on whether to accept the NCA physio's recommendation, or take a chance and pick Zaheer, lies with them. If they do pick Zaheer, he will get a chance to get back in the groove in a three-day warm-up match in Colombo starting July 18. "Zaheer has shown adequate recovery and coped up well to the given work load," V. Muthukumar, physiotherapist at the NCA, wrote in his report, a copy of which is with the Hindustan Times, assessing Zaheer's progress at the end of the camp, adding, "No physical discomforts apart from general soreness reported after any training session." The report details Zaheer's work at the camp including four weight training sessions and carefully monitored bowling sessions. He began with a 50-ball session on June 21, sent down 45 on June 24 and then 30 on June 25. When the players moved outdoors to open net sessions, Zaheer bowled a longish spell of 12 overs on June 27 split into two spells of eight and four overs. On June 30, Zaheer sent down 16 overs in a practice match, in spells of six, four, and again six overs. At the end of this exercise, the physio conceded that Zaheer had proved his fitness in long spells, but recommended, with a long-term view, that the left-arm quick play at least two three or four-day matches to "get a clear picture of his Test match fitness. " The problem for Zaheer is that there is hardly any senior cricket being played in India at the moment, with the domestic season only set to get under way in September. An option will be to try and get a game in England where Twenty20 cricket has just given way to four-day matches. Two seasons ago, when Zaheer was out of the team, it was a successful stint with Worcestershire, where he collected 78 wickets that paved his re-entry into international cricket.

Injuries bit of a concern for the test squad : Dilip Vengsarkar Dilip Vengsarkar said that the best available team will be picked for the coming Test series against SL. More... Injuries bit of a concern: Dilip Mumbai: Expressing concern over the injuries to some Indian bowlers, chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar on Friday indicated that the best available team will be picked for the forthcoming three-Test series against Sri Lanka. “The injuries are a bit of a concern but we have options too. All I can say about the selection (on July 8) is that we (selection committee) will pick the best possible team for the Sri Lanka series,” said the former India skipper at the sidelines of a prize distribution ceremony. Vengsarkar, however, professed ignorance over the injury scare to left arm pacer Zaheer Khan who, as per reports quoting National Cricket Academy physio V. Muthukumar, is still being troubled by the recurrence of the ankle injury that he had sustained in Australia last December. “I know nothing about that,” he said when queried on the matter. According to Muthukumar’s report to the BCCI the Zaheer’s fitness can be fully ascertained only after he plays a couple of three or four-day matches. India however, have only one warm-up game scheduled before the first Test Colombo from July 23-37. Zaheer had attended the fitness-specific session for some players at the NCA in Bangalore where his ankle injury was assessed by the physio. Sreesanth is also not fully fit. (PTI)

Here we go... another one bites the dust... what a series this could have been with zaheer and sreesanth... although first match is from 23td July..so still have 15 days to see if sree gets fit.. i think even Ishant Sharma will get injured in the middle of the series...he has been playing Non-stop since CB series.. i had hopes from sree in SL series....i thought he could be useful with his pace, bounce and swing.. Now RP and Ishant are the remaining front line bowlers...who knows...Munaf Musa Patel could be our trump card..he is not that bad after all...

Dhoni, who had hinted of his desire to take a break after a hectic Asia Cup in Pakistan, met BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah to convey it officially. "Dhoni met BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah and expressed his wish to take a break. He wants to opt out of the Test series," BCCI sources told PTI. Tendulkar clears fitness test More... Tendulkar clears fitness test DNA Correspondent Friday, July 11, 2008 03:13 IST MUMBAi: Sachin Tendulkar has been declared fit for the Sri Lanka series. Tendulkar was asked to undergo a fitness test by the BCCI and the master batsman has proved his fitness. On his return from England, Tendulkar went through the paces at the Bandra Kurla Complex on Wednesday. The tests were conducted by Indian team’s newly-appointed physio Nitin Patel. BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah confirmed that the Little Master is fit to resume international cricket. “We’ve received the report and Sachin is fit to go to Sri Lanka,” Shah said. Owing to a groin injury, Sachin has been out of international action for nearly four months. He missed two home Tests against South Africa in April besides the twin tours of Bangladesh and Pakistan. His last international game was the first Test against South Africa in Chennai in March this year. He had, however, played some IPL matches for Mumbai in between. Patel refused to dwell on the tests conducted on Tendulkar but DNA has learnt that it was a brief affair. “I was just asked by the BCCI to test his fitness and I’ve submitted my report,” the physio said. The BCCI recently made it mandatory for international players to undergo fitness tests when they come back from injury layoffs. Tendulkar missed the national camp conducted in Bangalore for the seniors recently. He was then on a tour of Europe. He, however, played a few friendly matches for the Lashings Cricket Club in England.
