They were favourites to win 1983 world Cup it wasnt to some determinationation by Kapils side and some luck. Pakistani became great side because they posed tough challenge to them. So no, Peak is not a Peak unless its long period. Only two Teams so far has acheved that. Australia and West Indies. Indian peak will come. But we are still some distance to go allthough we are on ascendency The problem in 1983 was India did not have any good spinners either. It was Kapil and nobody else. WI won that series 3-0 Shastri was best spinner with 12 wickets that too in 6 tests.Kapil took 29 wickets but had no support. That would not be problem with Kohli's team. India used to be great Hockey side till Western world introduced the turf. Similarly I feel India has wrestling a traditional sport. All our wrestlers are brilliant as long as they are playing on muddy soil. The same wrestlers cant wrestle as soon as they are put on mat. Same is true for cricket. Now protection gears allow players to play game differently. Edited March 7 by mishra Link to comment

I don't think it was just about protection gear. 1974 series against WI won 3-2 granted that WI team did not have the four prong pace attack. But that 1974 India team had Bedi, Chandra ,Prassana,. They were good enough in couple of tests to take 20 wickets in the two tests which India won. Kapil dev said it best when asked (Bedi, Pras or Channdra) were not better bowlers than either Kumble or Bhajji. Viv Richards or Clive lloyd even in their peak are not scoring that many runs on any Indian pitches against Jadeja,Ashwin and Kuldeep plus you have two fast bowlers Shami and Bumrah in any era. Tuffnel , Border and some no name spinners won test matches on their own against those WI teams in 1980s. 1980s Indian bowling attack especially at home was beyond awful.
