It's a shame he couldn't even maintain a 35 average to save his place in the team. Would have been a great captain for a couple of years at-least!

True. But we carried 3 passengers in Pujara, Kohli and Rahane in 2020s so Rahane could still have been backed as captain. He would've made a difference in the SA series away and won one of those winnable ones. At the very least he wouldn't have made selection errors which Kohli always did.

Losing Dhawan was a BIG, irreplaceable loss! He was the big match player who usually gave us initial momentum. Without him, we stalled and stuttered right at the start against NZ in the SF.

He was the only clutch batter in our top order, Rohit changed after the 2022 WT20 and Kohli always struggled in big games in ODI WC. Dhawan wouldn't have let us us 5/3 and given some sort of a start. That loss was on Dhawan injury and primarily in the selection - playing 4 wks, no clarity at no. 4 and dropping Shami to play Chahal

We play Shami in that match who was in stellar form averaging 3 wkts a match in the WC and NZ barely get to 210-220. That loss was on Kohli's selection. He was a poor LOI captain and wish BCCI had changed course after 2017 CT but we suffered through the torture for another 5 years when it was clear Kohli wasn't a short-format captain and Rohit was a much better option.
