AKane Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Rote memorization is the equivalent of using alcohol or drugs to solve life problems. The problems persist but you forget about them for a while. Similarly rote memorization can get you marks in an exam but it will not get you to understand the subject. Like alcohol or drugs one can get addicted to rote memorization as well. I got hooked on it in Std 12 long ago while studying organic chemistry. It took me a decade plus to shake the habit. At post graduate level I was literally trying to learn continuous time Kalman filters in estimation theory by memorization! Did I really understand differential equations or partial differential equations which I do now. What a waste of time trying to memorize. Even multiplication tables. One to ten is okay but do I really need to learn 17x8 or 24x7 ?? Would you do that in memory in real life trying to say design a bridge? In USA they allow cheat sheets for formulae - why not allow those in Indian exams as what is the point of learning formulae by heart? Nobody and I mean nobody works as hard as Indian students during study. However their incredible efforts are eaten up by the vampire that is rote memorization. It has to be stopped, it must be stopped and it must happen early. But is anyone even trying to stop it? There are forces which promote it though who are insidious and strong too. Till we get past rote memorization, we will never progress in engineering. It is not possible. G_B_ 1
Lord Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Education system needs to be moderniised. Things available on Google don't need to be memorised. Focus should be on building skills and personality
