How and why is it that India has not been able to co-opt such a small country - that is the only other Hindu Majority country right at it's border ?

This despite the fact that for thousands of years Nepal was an extension of the Mithila in Bihar.

Nepal survives because of India - its food security, power all is at India's mercy.

Nothing justifies how China has been able to penetrate Nepal's corridors of powers and make them hostile to India.

Indian Foreign Policy has been ignored for decades by the center, we have been looking inwards and fighting our own internal battles.

China was smart enough to capture that vacuum and spread its dependence onto Nepal, Myanmar, SL etc and has funneled enough money in the politics and power centers of these countries. Bhutan was an exception that perhaps China never focused on it too much.

Replacing China isnt as easy for India coz China has more money and resources than us. Only thing left is to wait for China to do harakiri and slowly spread cultural influence. But these things will take time. On top of it, our cringe public and social media dramebaazi isnt helping us as well.

SL is one example, Chinese dependence literally destroyed the country and India had to bail them out. As a result, situation is now bit favourable to India there. Nepal too will fall in place, once we continue to grow and become more powerful.

There is significant difference between Terai region and mountainous portion of Nepal.

Terai ones are interlinked with Indians when it comes to day to day affairs and are by extension Indians itself.

The relationship with the other portion deteriorated post 2015 Nepal crisis.

This is where Chinese/American influence is most.
