Instead of cutting down on Tests per tour, Vengsarkar said ODIs had to be targetted. "We play around five to seven ODI games on every tour," Vengsarkar told the Hindu. "This takes away 14 to 20 days. Personally, these two-Test series do not make much sense to me. It should either be three or five." The proposed itinerary for England's tour of India in November includes seven ODIs and two Tests. Vengsarkar also wanted the international schedule to be eased so that national players could participate in domestic cricket. "During most of the domestic matches I watched last season, there were not more than ten people witnessing the matches. You need international stars to take part in domestic cricket to raise the standard. Otherwise it would become very hard to judge quality and temperament for Test cricket. But where do the international cricketers have the time in a packed calendar?" Mahendra Singh Dhoni recently chose to pull out of the Test series in Sri Lanka because he needed a break and Vengsarkar said player fatigue had become a global problem. "The stronger nations have to honour their commitments against the weaker sides as well. But how do you accommodate so many matches? Test cricket should not suffer." Vengsarkar dismissed the idea that the Indian Premier League had thrown up fresh talent to pick from. "Twenty20 is an exciting and popular format but tell me five cricketers from the IPL who can play for India? A lot of players got exposure but are they good enough to play for India. Only Manpreet Gony, you could say to a certain extent, was a find from the IPL. Players like Yusuf Pathan were in the frame even before the IPL. Test cricket will produce players for Twenty20, not the other way round."

Vengsarkar must be disillusioned to think that he did not see IPL unearth any talent except Goni. May be he did not watch IPL or he is not fit to be chairman of selectors to discover talent. Did n't he see - Dhinda - Yo Mahesh - Bhadri - Amit Mishra - Dhawan - Bhadri - Asnodkar - Abishek Nayyar - Ravi Jadeja

Sorry to say Arkay, but I don't see future for Dinda in international cricket and Asnodkar too will fail in the international cricket because you just can't only slog these bowlers in ODIs or tests. As for Badri, Misra, Dhawan and Nayar---Ranji Trophy discovered them, not IPL. Fans who are least interested in domestic cricket might not have heard of these people, but they have been very good performers for their states and have done superbly in Ranji since last few years. These players have also been part of India A squad much before IPL. So which talent was genuinely IPL's find?

Why wasn't Dinda a good find Chandan? He was pacy, got good bounce and used the short ball intelligently. I'm not saying that he deserves a test cap but he certainly can be included in an ODI tournament.

About the OP...Vengsarkar is absolutley right...two test series is nothing.It hardly gives any competitive edge to a series.Four tests and five ODI's is the right schedule.

for once..i agree with Vengy here... each tour should be of at least 3 teat matches unless its against some minnow team..then there is no point playing 3 match series with them... instead of playing 7 ODIs..we can easily accommodate one more test by playing 5 ODIs.. 7 is overkill... but looking at the number of stadiums..in india...for each to host one international game... we need to play these many ODIs.. to keep them happy...and also in good financial health...

Thanks Colonel, after a long time you have spoken some sense. But, be aware my dear Vengi, if you keep speaking like this your days in BCCI will reduce like number of overs Chukhtar bowls in a match.. Lalit Modi and Shah will not be pleased with prospect of low income Test Cricket. T20 and ODIs will be the future of Cricket, otherwise we might see either 2 scenarios -- (1) A gradual reduction Test Cricket (2) A seperate team for Test and T20-ODIs so that fun of limited over cricket continues while another team keeps playing 5 day match in some part of country simultaneously.

Many articles on the sidelines suggested this and that is why you see Gony racing before him even though he had played very little in the domestic cricket previously and is less experienced than Dinda.

He definately needs to prove himself in 50 over cricket before an ODI debut. He also has a poor FC record. Looking at his action, I'll be shocked if he can maintain anything like over 130kph in 50 over or 4 day cricket - the bend of the back and the effort put into the delivery in the IPL cannot be sustained for more than 4 overs, imo.
