Ram Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Ok, all ya CA residents, help me out a bit here. Visiting some friends in San Jose/Santa Clara area for the labor day weekend. So, need to tips/ideas about where to go and what to see. So far, the itenary includes; camping at the Redwood national park, Trekking at the Lava mountain ( or whatever it is called), six flags near Santa Clara and some roaming around in SFO. Is there anything else more interesting/offbeat to do? Please suggest places within 200-300 miles radius of Santa Clara. I am hoping to surprise the 'locals' there by my 'knowledge' of California. Please dont let me down! :haha:
dial_100 Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 I think Monterey would be a good fun evening kinda place. Beautiful drive along CA-1 from SFO to Monterey. Very scenic. Even Yosemite isn't far from Santa Clara/San Jose.

vroomfondel Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 monterey is a good idea: if you like car-hiking, lots of pretty golf courses and rich people. cannery row will remind you of a steinbeck novel. and there's the aquarium if you prefer watching fish to eating them. half moon bay: awesome sparse views of water bodies, cold, frou frou restaurants, i recommend getting a drink at the ritz while you're there. go across the golden gate bridge and walk up mount tamalpais. if you're lucky and there's no fog (you won't be, and there will be) you can see a panorama of the coast. on the way back, get an expensive coffee and people watch in sausalito. there are great modern art galleries there, if you're into that. on the way there, you will see a sign for the 'john muir beach' and a 'john muir beach lookout'. please do yourself a favor and go there. it'll be crowded on labor day weekend. if you're serious about the outdoors, try going to big sur (about 2-3 hours south of sf). not sure about the camping permits, but watching the sunset there is one of greatest things I've ever seen. in the city, there are many many things to do: get a bloody mary at zeitgeist (mission district), buckwheat crepe lunch + cosmo at ti couz, best coffee in the bay area at blue bottle coffee company, frida kahlo at the MoMa lots of things to do in berkeley too. but you won't have time.
Bumper Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Welcome to California, Sriram! If you like camping & hiking, drive down to Yosemite. Its about 3 hours from the bay area. There isnt a better place for an outdoors person than the Yosemite mountains. You may also like to visit Lake Tahoe (Northern CA), about 4 hours drive from the bay area. You can hike, cruise, gamble (at the Nevada border) at Tahoe. Within the bay area, SFO is a must see, if you have never been there. Book the Alcatraz audio tour cruise in advance (Tickets usually sell like hot cakes). They take you to the Alcatraz island, into the prison & give you a self guided audio tour. You will like it for sure. Other than that, there is Golden Gate bridge, Muir woods, Stinson beach etc north of SFO. If you happen to drive within the city, take a drive down the crooked street & at the end of the day, stop by at Coit tower for a view of the city at night. There are tons of small mountains, woods in & around the bay area. Big basin is a thick red wood forest. It is within 30 miles of the bay area. Then finally, if you drive down South, there is Monterey & Santa Cruz. At Monterey there is a famous acquarium & a 17-mile drive. The 17-mile drive is quick way to catch up with Monterey's beautiful (but cold) beaches, without wasting too much time. In Santa Cruz, there is Mystery spot (if you have never seen one of those, you'll like it) and then the board walk, fronted by the beach. I'll be out of town during the labor day weekend. If you happen to come over here another time, give me a buzz.
