The issue is not with team selection

Recommended Posts

Its really funny how people in this forum are overreacting ... "Bring Yuvraj to open", "Drop Rohit", "Bring in Dhawan", "Bring in Badri", "Bring back XYZ", etc , etc. You think a little tweaking around here and there is gonna make us score 350 and bowl them out for 100? While some points are valid, many of you are the same people that were complaining about the team last year after the England and Australia ODI series , stating that you wanted the team to be younger. Younger blood, faster legs, stronger arms, etc. Well the downside of that is that you have to wait for the results to show. Lets face it, we have a young team, not much experience ... a team to groom for the future ... thats what we asked for wasnt it? Our 2 most senior players (Sachin & Sehwag) arent playing ... this is about as young as it gets. Yet still after a few bad matches people start calling for the axe to fall on certain players. You cant have it both ways. "A young team to groom for the future" ... That was the motto ... You cant expect us to win every game from the word go, and the problem was that we won the CB series (it set everyones expectations too high) ... People have forgotten that this team is full of 20 somethings. Now they are faced with one of the most dynamic spin duos in the past few years and are playing them on their own turf. Not to mention the difficulty every single batsman to have ever faced Mendis has had in reading him. Although I feel Badri and Dhawan got hard done by in not getting selected, I am almost certain that having them there wouldnt have made much difference. We have an inexperienced team ... I am not worried about results for the moment. It will take time. Be patient with this team, otherwise we will just have a repeat of the Chappel era.

Not so sure about the team selection, to be honest. How in the world did the team think-tank expect a 19 year debutant, who has played ONLY in the middle order all his life, to face up to Vaas in a low-scoring Dambulla pitch and expect him to succeed is beyond my imagination. Kohli was a wicket waiting to happen. He looked hapless against the guile of Vaas and movement of Kulesekhara. Though, one has to say, that isnt too much of a discredit on him. Not many Indian batsman out there looked like they were capable of surviving for too long.

We were 3-36 after 12 even before Mendis warmed up. No need to go out of your way to justify such a pathetic performance. This is international cricket. There will always be good talent on the other side. Doesn't mean you fold like a pack of cards or expect fans to not get frustrated when it happens.

Who said anything about folding? I was saying it would do more harm than good to drop these young players because of this tour. Our team is quite inxperienced, and we will gain very little by dropping one inexperienced player in favour of another when the whole point of selecting a young team was for them to gain experience, experience the highs and LOWS and come out a better team in a year or 2 down the track. Chopping and changing the team after a few bad matches will do more harm than good. One of the issues was shot selection. Kohli, Raina and Sharma all got out as a result of poor shot selection. Both Raina and Sharma were looking solid until one poor shot led to their downfall. The only way forward is to give these guys a chance (a decent chance ) to work on their game and improve their shot selection and more importantly get used to these bowlers. This is a young team and win, lose or draw ... this series is gonna be valuable experience for them. If we're gonna go with a young team, we can't drop everyone at the first sign of trouble. Thats what happened in the Chappell era, and if the selectors aren't careful, it could happen again.
