THX_1138 Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 You need to read few religious books few sceince books those are the rough numbers they agree on for the life of human species.. actually that i am well aware of... heck there was a time when i could watch one through the anthropological sequence of evolution of the modern homo sapien sapien... starting with ramapithecus some 25 million years ago. however, my question is: what is the relevance of that number to your post.
Aditi Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Mohandas K. Gandhi: "It is the duty of every cultured man or woman to read sympathetically the scriptures of the world. If we are to respect others' religions as we would have them respect our own, a friendly study of the world's religions is a sacred duty."

THX_1138 Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Adiben you might want to read on what Karamchand "Bapu" Gandhi thought about Muslims in general while we are at it :-D you sound like a man who bleeds at the first sight of religious equality.
flamy Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 unless your diet includes the livers of infant babies snatched from the arms of their mothers, religion has no place to judge an individual over his diet. thank being said, being a vegetarian is good for your health and your environment. if there is an organ that dominates your conduct, it should not be your tongue, but instead it should be your brain. stimulate your mind, and soon enough stimulating your palate would seem insignificant. sooooooooooooo rite. Stimulate that "brain". All probs solved.
THX_1138 Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 sooooooooooooo rite. Stimulate that "brain". All probs solved. i wish i practiced what i preach... i do stimulate an organ too, but not my brain.
flamy Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Munshi Premchand' date=' the famed Hindi/Urdu writer, summed it up best. [i']When a man takes a woman's traits he is immediately hailed as a Saint, if a woman's takes a man's trait she is immediately tagged a tart. Give it a thought. Typical women characteritics, kindness/thoughtfulness/emotions, if displayed by a man will bring tons of glory. In the above example of festivals while it is common place for a housewife to do all the festival I mentioned, if a man did half of that he would be deemed as "pious" and very "religious". On the other hand if a woman displays a typical men atitude - brashness, flirting, aggressive, impulsive etc - she becomes a tart. Is it because of the leadership? Is it nature? Is it because of inequality? Or is it just because it makes the world a better place overall?? Maybe all of them, maybe none. Probably the best answers has to come from the females since they would have experienced it firsthand. Personally I think it is quite unfair on them. um...... :dontknow: Personally though, we all have masculine and feminine characteristics, it's hitting the balance that we are most comfortable with and living true to it that matters rather than conforming with what "should be". Be bound neither by outer convention nor inner cowardice. :two_thumbs_up:
flamy Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 i wish i practiced what i preach... i do stimulate an organ too' date=' but not my brain.[/quote'] hey..... we ARE still talking abt our brains rite? :winky:

flamy Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Is that a quotation or did u come up with it? Either ways :hatsoff:  Well... I always had that belief, but never articulated it so beautifully, I read that somewhere and it resonates perfectly with me.

suraj Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Hello everyone, I have started this new threa to discusss what religions flaws are. People say that religion has alot of poistives from it, but one must realise that with every religion there are flaws. I am not ust talking about sikhism but as well as other religions. Today I will discusss what reallly religion can be like and being restricted from and how religion can kind of be a pain in the a%s. Firstly as a sikh(which I love being) means alot of annoying thing which I do not like one bit. As a sikh my mother is a very extreme sikh and doesnt allow me to eat meat at all, even fish. Which can be very annoying. I did enjoy meat until 6 but then mum said that being a vegeterian was much better, much better? I have felt no difference since I was eating meat and that allo gobby just gets annoying even do mum says try mango chutney which ruins it. Hair can be an issue, but I am very proud of my hair. If you dont cut it, it can be very hard to control it and can be hard to do things. I am a very impatinet person and what annoy me is washing my hair everyday, which in all honesty takes too long, then after that I have to put my turbin on which can be hard and very frustrating especially if I am just learning it as my dad generally helped me on that. Another point is church/gurdwara. Every sunday my mum wakes me up at 7 after being with friends till 1 at nite, telling me service is at bloody 8 oclock. gurdwara can be a good experinece and all that, but 6 hours sleep is not good and considering that sunday is the day i relax and not to mention its a 3 hour sevice in cape town. Its not that I dont like gurdwara service but do i really have to go EVERY SUNDAY? Mums from india are tooooooooooo religious. Lastly for sikhism my father prohibits me from consuming tobacco or alcohol at all, as it is bad for you. IMO most thing are bad for you as they cause cancer. Those drugs are relaxing drugs, its not like im taking narcotics with a semit carbolyxic hydromolecule is it? I want to try those drugs and my religious father says think what guru nanak would say and think. God bless guru nanak, but even is trying it all that bad. For other religions I know it can be quite bad and annoying. especially islam, as no dance, music without instuments, no pork, woman with hajibs, no cinema and theatre and more. In conclusion even though religion can bring porsperety to ones life and make it so much better, it can be very hards to listen and obey the rules in a holy boo kof a certain religion. I think I laern it a hard way compare to other relgious ppl. With this I hope that you find ways and see that religion is very important even though there are flaws. With every religion I am sure that there will be more postivies than downs and for that religion is good.:two_thumbs_up: Dont let problems get to you like sometime for me:D:pray: Awesome frank post Kumar:two_thumbs_up::two_thumbs_up: And your life really sucks man!- getting up at 7 every Sunday!!!- I could never be a Sikh just because of this reason.

Hence God is either not compassinate or is not all powerful or may be there is no GOD at all.. ah... are you trying to convince an atheist that there is no god? my question to you is that why on earth are you criticizing the so called gods of the abrahamic faiths for sitting on the sidelines for close to 200,000 years while their supposed subjects were battling one calamity after another, when your faith's gods themselves are just as guilty.
fineleg Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Awesome frank post Kumar:two_thumbs_up::two_thumbs_up: And your life really sucks man!- getting up at 7 every Sunday!!!- I could never be a Sikh just because of this reason. :cantstop: Simple things in life for suraj - wake up late, laze around, see if there are the waters-of-South-Africa babes around, then :icflove: then party and sleep late

CC1981 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Problem with religion is simple : It is an arbitary construct. Ie, it is the opinion of one/few which got cannonised into something special. Be it word-for-word verbatim of whatever Mohammed or Moses claimed or a gradual compilation of the limited worldview of our vedic ancestors. It is neither a divine construct ( no God or agent-of-God ever came to me to tell me about proper conduct) nor is the concept of divine teachings 'to be passed down through the generations' of any logical value. Be it Krishna's doctrine or this so-called Allah's- if they actually wished us to follow it and if there is actual consequence of not following their wishes, they'd have individually informed us to the singular consequences of their rule-book. It makes no sense to have a 'prophet' or a guru, who's words will be put in text, just like my ramblings, your dementia and someone else's fantasies and we are back to square one- trying to discern the divine from the non. The problem with religion is one of the eternal struggle between courage and cowardice, between ability to change and the cowardice of preserving the lifestyle of the ancients through a beleif system that needlessly exalts the habits of the past. Basic problem with religion is it fixates on a static concept in an universe that is continuously evolving and changing. Be it the Abrahamism or Dharmism of the world, religion asumes the cosmos to be static, as if with static 'rules' of function and consequence. In essence, religion is the path of the weak - because they continuously seek guidence from a third party source- a source they spend great energy convincing themselves of to be the 'real one', that will keep them from harm and make sure their lives are successful (or if unsuccessful, give them the dilaasa that post-life or next one is going to be better). Religion is a rejection of our senses, of our ability to adapt, our ability to define what morality is according to the circumstances of the world, rather than accept a static concept of morality. It is a rejection of life itself, because life involves acting on our wishes, our senses, making mistakes, getting some things right, etc etc. Religion is the way of the untermensch - the lesser man- the man who's afraid to chart his own destiny through the cosmos.
