Once again BCCI jumps in to save PCB

Recommended Posts

The fate of the Champions Trophy hangs on Sunday's telephone hook-up after it emerged that India and Pakistan have hardened their position on the tournament going ahead as scheduled from September 12 onwards in Karachi and Lahore, leaving the ICC with the possibility of a cancellation otherwise. An option is to relocate the tournament to Sri Lanka, the official alternate venue - a solution that ESPN-Star Sports (ESS), the official broadcaster, may agree to even at this late stage - but India and Pakistan remain adamant that the tournament cannot be shifted on what they believe are "flimsy grounds". The ICC, it is learnt, was informed about this view during a meeting at its headquarters in Dubai on Tuesday evening between David Morgan, its president, Sharad Pawar, its vice-president who also heads the BCCI, Haroon Lorgat, its chief executive and Shafqat Naghmi, the chief operating officer of the PCB. Apparently, there is also a credible pullout threat from Pakistan, backed by India, if the venue is changed. Asked if moving the tournament to Sri Lanka was a solution, a source said, "You can't rule out the possibility of a cancellation, considering the absolute lack of a consensus at this stage." There is no other alternative for the tournament which involves teams from the top eight cricket nations, sources told Cricinfo. "If countries like Australia pull out, there is no question of the tournament going ahead with substitutes like Bangladesh," a source said. "The broadcasters are not going to allow that." Crucially, it's understood that ESS is concerned as there is no clarity yet on the tournament, which is less than a month away, and is open to a shift in order to salvage the situation. "Obviously, ESS wants the best teams to participate and ensure a world-class tournament," a source said. "It is possible [to ensure quality coverage] if it is shifted to a nearby country even now, but it will involve significant extra costs for the broadcaster." The ICC board is expected to take a final decision on the issue during a teleconference on Sunday, two days after its task force on the Champions Trophy discusses the feedback it received from officials and players' representatives in Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa. Players' associations from these countries have insisted security concerns remain - another blast was reported near Islamabad on Thursday - and officials from the Australian Cricketers' Association and the New Zealand Cricket Players' Association have said they would advise teams against touring. Their boards may highlight those views, if not endorse them, on Sunday, but the BCCI and the PCB, with the traditional backing of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, are expected to reiterate that the ICC's "positive" security assessment after the Asia Cup in Karachi and Lahore during June-July leaves no room for doubt. The ICC, meanwhile, remains firm the tournament will go ahead in Pakistan, as of now, and its officials are in Karachi and Lahore this week, conducting venue inspections. "We are still fighting and are hopeful of hosting the tournament," Naghmi told Cricinfo. All this, of course, leaves Sri Lanka in an unusual position. Duleep Mendis, Sri Lanka Cricket chief executive, told Cricinfo his country is prepared to host the tournament if needed. However, he said the tournament should go ahead in Pakistan, indicating which way the Asian countries are likely to go if the future of the Champions Trophy comes down to a vote of the ICC board - any decision requires at least a 7-3 majority. "The issue of security is subjective and what some may believe to be reality will be seen as mere perception by others," a source said. "This is the issue that has to be resolved on Sunday, if the tournament has to go ahead." http://content-www.cricinfo.com/iccct2008/content/current/story/365803.html

yeah since the ICL posters are very grateful to the PCB for fighting BCCI's wars....
We don't need your support and most of it is never timely anyway . I still remember how we bailed your PCB when it's coffers were empty by touring Pak in 2004 .Aftermath , PCB didn't even stand by us on the third umpire referral issue.

So.... IND touring PAK for the first time in 15 years(for tests) = PCB should NOT have their own opinion on any issue???

what the heck man? Why can't there be a simple disagreement? p.s i would have MUCH rather have had PCB agree with the BCCI on the umpiring issue than the ICL players issue.
That's just one stance that came to my mind in a fly . I am sure their are other instances were we courted their support and didn't get it... We supported PCB even during the "Hair incident". As a non posting member of PP , I don't see any appreciation for our bail outs. On the contrary I see thread after thread bashing BCCI and Indian greats like Sachin , Kapil etc. Surely , their is a cause of concern from our side when such bashing happens . If you can't comprehend this , I have nothing else to add...

yeah i can't... because you are almost ignoring PCB have been fighting BCCI's war...just a few days ago they dropped Faisal Iqbal from the 30 man squad just because he played in an exhibition match with the ICL players! They were even threatening to sue the ICL for playing a team called "Pakistani" when even the BCCI didn't make any noise about the team called "india" in ICL.... and yet you are complaining about PCB being ungrateful to the BCCI! ...and secondly i don't see any "PCB appreciation" threads here for fighting BCCI's wars...and also please don't tell me that the Pakistani great players are NOT bashed on ICL..

If PCB doesnt have balls to stand up then is it BCCI's problem. How can you blame BCCI if Pak is disowning its own players ? As for PCB not being thankful .. its DHNADA business ek haath lay ek haath day. BCCI & PCB are both run by greedy politicians and I dont think Indians should be asking this question to a Pakistani. If Im unhappy about how PCB didnt vote/support India then its because BCCI couldn't do enough to convince them .

Relaaaax !!! It's better to forget the past and move on. There will be fight between India and Pakistan, but that doesn't mean stop supporting each other. If Pakistan and India stand together, is only way to eliminate discrimination from Western Countries. Back in 2004, wasn't really good time. But now, we and you guys have grown maturity and moving on to friendship which is good sign i say. I too have many India friends, in fact they are my best friends at the moment. Forget about the past and look in the future. Because we will have to witness new problems in the future. ECB vs BCCI war going on, CT issues going on, ICL issues going on and too many issues so far. The point is we may or may not shower hatred between each other, but to put those all behind, to support each other no matter what. Even if we don't appreciate in public, but in our heart we do. That doesn't show the whole picture, but it's true. If you speak of PP, several members are quite biased. Don't take them seriously. Others who don't praise India support because they don't wanna look bad in front of them. But they do mean to share Thank in their heart. If you are familiar in PakCricket, then MalikBhai was severely criticized for supporting India all the way and was called Traitor by his own people in PakCricket. Some people haven't grown up yet and there are some people who have. Just try to be neutral if can. If hatred is still alive, then that's what make India-Pakistan Cricket so exciting
