Sachinism Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 The Hollywood studio behind the hit Harry Potter movies is suing the makers of a Bollywood children's film Hari Puttar - A Comedy of Terrors. British media reports said Warner Bros had alleged the title of the Hindi-language movie, which was filmed in England, was too close to those based on JK Rowling's famous boy wizard. The Bollywood film tells the story of a Hari Prasad Dhoonda, a lonely 10-year-old boy who has been nicknamed Hari Puttar and moves to Britain. It is up to Hari to save a top-secret computer chip developed by his father, Professor Dhoonda, for the Indian Army from being stolen by intruders when the youngster is left home alone. However, unlike the English boy wizard, Hari has no magic powers. Mirchi Movies, the Bombay-based producer of the film, says any similarities between Hari and Harry Potter are purely coincidental. "Personally, I cannot see any resemblance between the names," The Times newspaper quoted Mirchi's chief executive Munish Purii as saying. The Bollywood film's star Zain Khan, 11, agreed. "The movie has nothing to do with Harry Potter," was quoted as saying. The lack of intellectual output from Bollywood is evident from the fact that Sholay is the most popular bollywood movie of alltime. Yet, the music for Sholay is copied by RD Burman from foreign sources, the plot-line of Sholay is a direct adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai ( except for 7, we have 2).

India is a lucrative market for Hollywood right now. Their production houses are entering the Indian market both in terms of English as well as Indian movies. No law suit will be allowed here at this stage at least. They have to partner with local producers, directors and actors to be successful. They dont want to be at odds with them. So, plagiarism will be allowed in Bollywood for a while.

Popular doesn't equal creative in Bollywood, or any other wood for that matter. There have been a number of good original films lately. Khosla ka Ghosla comes to mind. Aamir Khan's films are mostly original and most of the times, top quality stuff.

Or try selling an auto-rickshaw with 'Mercades' logo on it and see how it goes down. Doesn't matter if the storyline (content) is the same or not - the name is copyrighted and simple wordplay over names is cheating/conning the masses.

Sharm bhi nahin aati hai inko.......

The High Court shares your POV and has given Hari Puttar the go-ahead. Somehow the fact that the producers are trying to illegally cash-in on the popularity on Harry Potter doesn't seem to bother the HC judges.

The movie was slated for release on September 12 and would now premiere this Friday. “In my view, the cognoscenti, the intellectuals and even the pseudo-intellectuals presumably know the difference between chalk and cheese or at any rate must be presumed to know the same,’’ Justice Khetrapal said.

So from name to script everything seems to be inspired.
