More... Dravid to play in Buchi Babu Mon 01 Sep, 08:45 AM Rahul Dravid will play for Karnataka in the Buchi Babu All-India invitation tournament to be held in Chennai from September 2 to 19. The tournament, Tamil Nadu Cricket Association's curtain-raiser to 2008-09, will enter its 99th year this season. It is likely the Buchi Babu tournament, which consists of three-day games, will see more national players this year since the postponement of the Champions Trophy has left a gap in the international calendar. Also, the Indian board wanted its top players to play in key domestic tournaments and participate in a preparatory camp ahead of the four-Test series against Australia starting in Bangalore on October 9. C Raghu, the offspinning allrounder, who scored 359 and picked up nine wickets from seven Ranji matches last season, will lead the Karnataka side in the tournament that will also include an Andhra Cricket Association side captained by Gnaneswara Rao. Karnataka squad Rahul Dravid, KB Pawan (wk), CB Karthik, V Cheluvaraj, Deepak Chougule, Amit Verma, Sunil Raju, Udit Patel, Ryan Ninan, NC Aiyappa, KP Appanna, S Aravind, Raju Bhatkal, Devraj Patil, Akshay. http://www.hindu.com/2007/08/16/stories/2007081660871800.htm here is an article from last year... Buchi Babu from today Thursday, Aug 16, 2007 Special Correspondent Chennai: The Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket tournament will be held here from August 16 to September 3. The tournament, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), will feature prominent State sides like Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, Hyderabad, Baroda and Rajasthan. An Australian Academy team from the Centre of Excellence will also be taking part. Speaking at a press conference at the V.A. Parthasarathy Hall in the TNCA Club on Tuesday night, the TNCA secretary, K.S. Viswanathan, said, since the State sides had shown an overwhelming interest in this pre-Ranji Trophy season tournament, a decision was taken not to invite the corporate sides. β€œIn fact, we had to say no to a number of State sides since their entries came in late. It has been raining in the other parts of the country and this a good time to play cricket here. All the sides are guaranteed three matches in the league phase, providing ample opportunities for the cricketers,” Mr. Vishwanathan said. Sixteen teams have been divided into four Zones of four sides each. The teams topping the group will enter the semifinals, to be held on August 28, 29, and 30. The final will be staged at the M.A. Chidambaram (MAC) Stadium on September 1, 2 and 3. The league matches too will be played over three days. Apart from MAC, matches will be on at ICL-Guru Nanak, SRMC, CPT-IP, IIT-Chemplast, Mayajaal, Vivekananda and the Southern Railway grounds. The host will field two sides β€” TNCA XI and Combined Districts. K. Shri Vasudeva Das will skipper the first side, with off-spining all-rounder R. Ashwin, his deputy. Much focus will be on openers M. Vijay and Abhinav Mukund. Vasanth Saravanan will turn out for the Districts, indicating his availability for the State side this season. Serious contender Mumbai could post a serious challenge to the TNCA team, the holder. The side includes Vinayak Mane, Vinit Indulkar, Abhishek Nair, Iqbal Abdullah and Avishkar Salvi. The Australian Academy side, as its coach Brian McFadyen pointed out, was taking part chiefly to adapt to the heat and the humidity in these parts and gain experience on the sub-continental pitches. In Philip Hughes, the side has an exciting left-handed top-order batsman and wicket-keeper. Pace bowler Brendon Drew was among the 30 probables for the Twenty20 World Cup. The tournament will enter its 100th year in 2009, according to the TNCA Joint Secretary, G. Natarajan.

This year it is just a two day match with each team getting to bat for 90 overs a day. Here is the format explained. Chennai: The Buchi Babu Naidu Memorial cricket tournament will start here on Tuesday with an all-new format of 90-overs-a-side two-day matches. TNCA secretary KS Viswanathan, said the format for this year’s tournament has been shifted from three-day matches during round robin league stage to 90 overs per innings of two-days duration. So it doesn't have a FC status and if State associations hadn't shown a will to to play, it could have been inter-club tournament. damn, this harmeet guy looks very young, looks like he might be just 14-15. hope we get to see him in Ranji this year. Salil/Chandan, any idea when the squads will be announced of the Ranji teams???
I think they will be announced just before or after Irani Trophy. I'm very disappointed at Dravid's failure in a tournament like Buchi Babu. Wonder how and why the news was not quoted in the sports page of the main news-papers. Had Sachin failed in this tournament, it'd have created great hue and cry to drop him. Thankfully Dravid is spared. For some reason he did not play in the semifinal, But I hope he impresses us in Irani trophy match.
tics; the article does say that Harmeet's a U15 player. Great to see guys like Dravid, Jaffer and Venu Rao going back to basics for this historic old tournament that's been almost forgotten by so many.
Even Rohit Sharma appeared for Mumbai and hammered 90 runs in quick times. Pujara is also doing well after inexplicably not given chance in the A team.

Yup, and great that he's getting such exposure. As for Mumbai - I'm guessing Amol will be skip again this year. Openers are likely to be Jaffer and Rahane as first choice with Kukreja as backup/possibly #3 and Sushant Marathe as another possible Middle order's looking strong - Amol obviously, Rohit Sharma, Hiken Shah, Prashant Naik - possibly Vinit Indulkar somewhere on the back of the fringe. Nayar and Agarkar will be the lead all rounders Powar will lead the spin attack - Iqbal Abdulla will be the 2nd spinner in the first XI. Not sure about the backup 3rd spinner Lots of questions over the pace attack - Dhawal Kulkarni's a definite, but the rest of the spots are really toss-ups between Salvi, Hazare, Murtaza Hussain and Mundeep Mungela if they go for youth. Keeping spot should be interesting - Samant didn't do great w/ the bat last year and is getting on in years - I wouldn't be surprised if Omkar Gurav is the first pick keeper (or if they go w/ Samant for a few games and then push for Gurav if he doesn't make runs)

thats a good squad salil and perhapz this might be somewhat similar to wat the official squad would be of Mumbai once it is announced. perhapz, the inclusion of Rohit Sharma in Indian test squad on regular basis would be hurting big time to Mumbai, with seniors still around in the team, he won't be getting any chance to play for India in test soon definately and would be just sitting there in Indian test squad. it would be ideal if bcci let him play some games in Ranji for his state rather then including him in the national side squad where it's hard for him to find a place in playing 11
