Formula Hollywood movies

A friend of mine gave me a dvd called the breed. A bunch of dogs have gone crazy, they have become zombie-dogs and want human blood. Another bunch of youngsters are out to save human race from these zombie-dogs. What bullshit. Hollywood is fast on the way of stinking formula movies. 1. A bunch of zombies want to kill all humans. Another bunch of livings acting like total morons are out to save the human race. The livings are such morons that by the end of the movie you are ashamed of being human and you start supporting the zombies who act much more wisely. 2. A never seen before species, born out of either scientific experiments by a mad scientist or toxic waste thrown into a river by a chemical plant, is out to kill all humans. The police, FBI, CIA, army, air force, navy and all other agencies are failing to stop him. A group of moron youngsters then take up the responsibility to save the human race by kilingl the creature(s) and guess what, they actually do it. :omg: 3. Aliens have come to earth with a terrifying intention: kill all the humans. There is no way you can stop them. A bunch of boys and girls come to save human race from them. A couple of them are scientists who were rejected by NASA. Somehow the otherwise intelligent aliens act like retards when it comes to killing these youngsters and you can never imagine what happens in the end- the human race survives....what an original climax.:omg: 4. A monster, who has the structure of a human, but is actually something else is on a killing spree. He or she has a sharp weapon and she slices human bodies in a particular way to make it look yuck resulting in an unforeseen jet fountain of blood. A group of young boys and girls are trapped in the same area which can be an island or a jungle or some other isolated place. They have drugs and sex with each other in the beginning of the movie till one of them gets killed while having sex. The monster has a preference for girls and each of the girls make it a point to go topless at least once before getting killed. Some of them even die topless (probably trying to distract the monster). The two leading males fight with each other for some stupid reason. And then the sexiest of all girls kills the monster. The boy she had sex with also survives. - thats a horror movie. 5. There is a man with super powers that he uses to prevent crime in a certain city. There is a group of another 3/4 men (and possibly women also) with super powers who come to fight him. They kidnap his girl friend who has no super power. The hero kills the villains and saves the girl. The end. 6. Murders are happening left right and center and the hero sets off to find the criminal. Then he discovers that either he himself or his wife/girlfriend/daughter has Multiple Personality Syndrome. Its the biggest turn off.:wall: Its never ending. And people say that Bollywood makes formula movies.:wall:

There you go. So both Industries create some great movies and some formula movies. But if you look at the trends, where Bollywood is getting better at making quality movies, Hyllowood is getting more and more into formula. In the last few weeks Bollywood has given very good movies. Mumbai Meri jaan, Rock on, Wednesday and now I hear Sajjanpur is a cool movie as well. At the same time, wanted was crap, righteous kill was average and all other Hollywood movies were either average or crap. The only major difference between Hollywood and Bollywood is production value. They spend good money and make their zombies/animals/monsters look more real. Otherwise there isnt much difference between what a Rajnikant does and what a James Bond does.

It isnt so much the story-line that matters in a movie. Its the script and the overrall production quality. When James Cameron shows Arnold peeling off his skin and revealing a metal endo skeleton in T2, its seems so real that you almost believe it. Ultimately, you can have the same story taken in 20 different ways and yet all of them can be equally enthralling, provided the movie is well made. That is the speciality of Hollywood movies. Yes, their main story lines may be as stereotypical as Bollywood movies, but the overall production quality, cast, editing, sound effect, mixing....everything is so well done.

Not the best by a long shot, but not the worst either. I have seen blockbuster Hollywood movies with even worser special effects. However, this is where people like Kamal should be commended. He isnt just trying to make movies, he is trying to lift the standards of an entire Industry, single handedly. And Kudos to him for that.

A Titanic, a LOTR, a Spiderman will always make money than say Scent of Woman, Mystic River etc. No movie fan in his right frame of mind thinks of any of the above movie as his favorite. Heck most of the cult classic like Shawshank redemption, Usual Suspects etc hardly receive a fraction of Box Office success that a Batman movie does. Bollywood atleast can boast of movies that are all time classic, and yet the top at the box office. Movies like Sholay and Deewar quickly come to mind. Even Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge was not so bad.

Last few weeks? I would say Bollywood has been churning out fantastic movies in last few years. From the top of my mind: Being Cyrus Iqbal Rang de Basanti Black Friday Black Hazaron Khwaishein Aishi Khosla ka Ghonsla etc etc.

The only major difference between Hollywood and Bollywood is production value. They spend good money and make their zombies/animals/monsters look more real. Otherwise there isnt much difference between what a Rajnikant does and what a James Bond does.

I would give credit to Hollywood for being orginal. Atleast whatever cr@p they churn out is their cr@p. Bollywood often carries cr@p from everywhere - from Hollywood to Hong Kong - and tags it as its own. Whenever Bollywood comes back to its roots, even if it takes insipration from some place, it comes out fantastic. Case in point Omkara. A big problem in the language issue. An average Tamilian, Malyalam person would be able to understand the intricacy of Scent of a Woman but is clueless while watching Omkara. So obviously Hollywood will get props not only outside India but within India as well. xxx

I heard an interview of Will Smith and he stated that his agent and him have researched that the movies that turn out to be a blockbuster has to have something from the following: aliens and superheroes. Most of these movies turn out to be blockbusters.

I cannot miss this chance to lament on the pathetic standards of Indian cinema, specifically, Tamil Cinema. Its shocking to find the directors suffer from a serious bout of intellectual bankruptcy. Especially in Tamil Cinema, you can almost tell where the movie is going after 10-15 mniutes. Usually, the movie begins with a gala introduction of the Hero, with him either chasing something or running away from something. At the end of the first scene, our hero fills the screen with a smiling face and a big greeting to the audience. This is followed by a song that has 100s of people who magically appear from nowhere. This takes up about 20 minutes of the movie. Invariably, our hero is a hard-working, honest, upright mid-20s guy from a lower strata of the society, who doesnt hesitate to raise his voice against injustice. The sequence of building up his persona is around 30-35 minutes. Of course, then comes the heroine, who invariably meets sees him first during a fight sequence and then immediately falls in love or both of them start quarelling among each other for some reason and end up falling in love. Parrallely, there is the villain introduction. He is either a powerful politician or a goonda or a policeman. All this heroine introdcution, love making, 'romantic songs' and villain intro takes about 45 minutes. Inevitably, the hero and the villain lock horns over some civic issue. The clash starts. The villain uses his influence to malign the hero, the hero uses his intellect and super-powers to hit back at the villain. At one point, all seems lost for the hero..... 30 minutes. And this all leads us to the obvious climax, when the hero manages to single-handedly kill all the associates of the villain. They clash one-on-one in some deserted building in a protracted fight sequence lasting many hours and ultimately, the hero prevails.... 30 minutes.. And thats brings us to the conclusion of 3 hours of utter crap. Of course, this is the just the basic formula, with only small parts of it interchanged every now and then. Pathetic, absolutely pathetic.

I remember Mel Gibson was very eager to work in Bollywood after watching Bandit Queen. He said that there was no scope of quality work left in Hollywood. He said that in Hollywood creartive directors had been replaced by computer graphics. At that time he intended to shift to Bollywood permanently. But then I guess they showed him a few more Bolly movies and he changed his mind.:D

Hollywood movies can be broken down into easy categories 1. Block busters (Super heroes etc etc) 2. Targetted towards Oscars (Ex: Good Shepherd, Syrianna etc) 3. Low budget comic flicks (Ex: Will ferrell movies etc) The problem with Bollywood is that categories 1 and 2 target the same audience, so even if a movie starts with a great intention it has to achieve various commercial adjustments before the producers/financiers actually approve. This actually impacts the quality of the movie a lot.
