It would be a great program to introduce. More people will come into the armed forces, but more importantly, those who are unfortunate can afford to go to college. I know, i know, even the education system is corrupt, but still.....

Gambit Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Indian army have such a program. It's called the Short Services Commission. Here's something on it - The Indian army has a wonderful alternative for all those who aspire to serve for a few years. It is called short service commission (ssc). It gives you the option of joining the Indian army, and serving as a commissioned officer for 14 years i.e. For an initial period of 10 yrs, extendable by 4 yrs. Once you have completed 10 yrs of service, you are allowed to opt for permanent commission. Alternatively, you can also ask for release from service on completion of 5th year of service. With a short service commission, you will have the best of both worlds. Even as it gives you the privileges and benefits of a full-fledged commission, you will be imbibing qualities like analytical thinking skills, planning ability, administrative powers, organisational talent that will make you an invaluable asset to any organization that you join after the army. At the end of the day, 5-14 yrs as an ssc officer will make you a leader for life.

Here's something on it - oh, sweet, thanks! it seems like a job more than a scholarship. But, maybe it is a US ROTC type program. If that's the case, they should really start pushing it. For those who can't afford to go to college, this is an ideal program. They get great experience within the program + free education. Looks good on a resume, and they're much more aware of 'how' to act in adverse situations. Edit: Yeah, is this something that one can do while in college (or even work)?

It's a dedicated stint of 5 years, at the end of which you can either leave or continue. But, I would like to see a program set up to target high school and college students. A scholarship type program.

Its called NCC... or atleast it was when i was in primary school when i last heard of it. and yes, it does have discount programs for your higher education. it does however, require that you commit to the army for a certain period, and usually most individuals become career servicemen. it is a very rewarding experience, though not as fiscally sound. my father's best friend from college attended engineering college on this program through the air force.

So it seems to be that would be ok. A lot of the guys in the govt. are like that (including our PM, as far as I know [he's a Harvard grad.]).

I can introduce you to a fellow PhD. student in my department, who is here on leave from DRDO (about 7 years of experience) is a close friend of mine. He is returning to India in summer 09.
