siddhu Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Hi, My parents will be visiting to US pretty soon for the first time. And I need some advise over international SIM card for them so that they can contact me or vice versa. Does anybody have any experience in this area and can guide me?? Thanks...
siddhu Posted December 14, 2008 Author Posted December 14, 2008 Oh.. forgot to add. they will be coming via Mumbai.
siddhu Posted December 14, 2008 Author Posted December 14, 2008 No. I am in US. And my parents will be visiting for the first time. And my question is... what kind of SIM card to buy in India that will allow them to call me from anywhere during the course of their flight which will originate from Bombay to US and how much will it cost per minute or per call etc. I am just worried that somebody (read SIM card seller) might take them for a ride and thats why i want to collect information of what kind of card to buy, what will be cost/call and how to test that card. Thanks in advance...
Dirty_South Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Go for Airtel/Vodafone with the International Roaming activated !
Cricketics Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Just talked to a friend of mine @ Sidhu. what my friend was telling me was that you can buy airtel international calling card from the airport. i think at the airport they sell some special calling cards which are not available out in regular airtel stores.
jf1gp_1 Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 make sure thye have a tri band phone no point having international roaming but the phone doesnt support US frequency band.
Holysmoke Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 is money an issue? otherwise international roaming on indian phone is the most hasslefree.. and that way they can contact you from whereever they are catching a connecting flight... afaik, nothing will allow you to talk during a flight otherwise, just get an indian cellphone with international roaming nowadays u get us cell phones in india.. pay 40$, u get a phone + 300 cellphone mins in usa, (usa to usa only).. they can get that.. they can call u from indian phone when in india, and then call from us phone when here...
Predator_05 Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Doesn't Air India do direct flights from Mumbai to the USA ?
punjabi_khota Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Doesn't Air India do direct flights from Mumbai to the USA ? U bet it does. NYC and DC for sure from Mumbai and Delhi. 16 hours flat.

Predator_05 Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 U bet it does. NYC and DC for sure from Mumbai and Delhi. 16 hours flat. Wouldn't be so bad if Air India wasn't the sh[ittiest airliner on earth.
punjabi_khota Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Wouldn't be so bad if Air India wasn't the sh[ittiest airliner on earth. Ever heard of Aeroflot ? Desi Cartman Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Ever heard of Aeroflot ? I travelled from India to Spain and back in 400$ in summer of 2004. with 10 hours layovers each way in Moscow :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: I did that on British and Iberia Airlines ... :two_thumbs_up:
siddhu Posted December 15, 2008 Author Posted December 15, 2008 Thanks for the suggestion guys... I think mostly i will go with Airtel International Roaming.. and if i remember correctly they have Sony Ericson 510i phone which is a triband phone. I will also look for the $40 phone just in case.
siddhu Posted December 15, 2008 Author Posted December 15, 2008 Wouldn't be so bad if Air India wasn't the sh[ittiest airliner on earth. I agree. Air India is the shi ttiest airliner on earth. But I usually prefer NWA / Continental. And Continental also offers the direct flight from Bombay to Newark and maybe a couple of other locations too. I remember United also starting that service but either it never paned out or they cancelled it. Anyway, I have heard Jet Airways either has already started the service or are going to start that service.
