Just like Rush Limbaugh etc have screwed up American Right, likes of Arundhati shall screw the Indian left. She will not give enough ammunition to Indian right wing morons, but also make the kind of statement that should essentially make the Indian moderates wonder whats wrong with Indian liberals.

She is a fundamentalist (not religious) whose agenda is her own world view seen through her own glasses, whatever doesnt fit in her vision she dismisses them and goes on with her oratory. She is narcissistic to the extreme and plays the devils advocate far too often, that I suspect she is intellectually dishonest and takes the contrarian view just to prove she is her own individual.

How can yanyone trust this kind of liars.

I remmeber her fake bravado when SC took her to task for contempt of court.. She kept insisitng she rather go to jail than apologize.. SC awared just few days jail term suddenly lady came to her senses and made a deal and paid the fine instead........... For someone with loud mouth I saw zero conviction

She will rip apart THX eklauta genital for calling her S.O.' date=' an insult to woman. Woman rights organizations will give her "genital ripping" Booker.:cantstop:[/quote'] actually you dumb frack, SO means significant other... that bit about 'sex object' was a joke pulled by one of the other guys in a lighter mood. although you seem to gain your knowledge of abbreviations from discussion boards.

Very well said :hatsoff: But you will be surprised to know the amount of clout such people have and the support.
Really?? I firmly believe her influence within India is non existent at best, to marginal at worst. In the West she may be marginal for sure.

Anyone who doesnt conform with the idea of 'My country is the greatest, I wont say a word against it, everything is hunky-dory about India, we shouldnt question any of its credentials' etc, is conveniently labeled 'anti-national'. For those nationalists here who speak from the comforts of their living room, please, venture out of your air-conditioned rooms for a while and you'll probably discover that in India, there is still massive discrimination based on caste/creed/religion/wealth/education/sex etc and 1000s of people are having to endure some form of abuse or discrimination or the other.

MM, Im not a nationalist by any stretch, I dont know much about Barka dutt before last months mumbai tragedy. But Arundati, is a different case, she is either completely clueless (I find that hard to believe, having read her god of small things, she is definitely smart) or she is intellectually dishonest. Im not for a second saying that there is massive discrimination in India, there is, but what that has got to do with this article? I hardly ever agree with Dr or BB, but in Arundati's case they are right. she is a hypocrite.

Of course, she does exaggerate a bit, but I implore you to read her other articles, especially on magazines like the Frontline. The fact of the matter is, in today’s world, while the rest of the world marvels at India ‘as a shining beacon of democracy in a volatile region, as a nation with 150 million peaceful Muslims’, any Indian even remotely questioning these credentials is viewed as someone who sells his/her country short in the world stage. The fact of the matter is, the reality is far removed from what the politicians would like to portray it as. India is, as it has been for many decades now, apathetic and discriminatory towards individual rights and freedom. Roy is merely echoing these sentiments. Of course, you may not agree with her tone or tenor, but you cannot run away from the reality that she is trying to address.

Peacefull ehh ? Lets see .... the entire Kashmir Valley errupted on the piddly issue of allocating 40 acres to a Hindu temple and the situation went completely out of control and your torch bearer of "Rights and freedom a.k.a Arundhati Roy" comes out and says Kashmir needs freedom from India ... Bravo. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/3378687.cms
No, she’s wrong and so are you. Roy is obviously caught up in her ultra-liberal mindset, just like you’re in your hardcore, fundamentalist, right wing one.

The main issue here is, she may be right, but this definitely is not the time, how it comes across is that she is justifying this terrorist act. I have read A Roy for a while, there are some attributes in her writing which are ever present. Just in the article quoted above: * Misrepresentation Quote from the article "As tension in the region builds, U.S. Senator John McCain has warned Pakistan that, if it didn't act fast to arrest the "bad guys," he had personal information that India would launch air strikes on "terrorist camps" in Pakistan and that Washington could do nothing because Mumbai was India's 9/11." Where as the Indian Government has always stated "War is not really an option at this moment. And nowhere in the original quote did Mccain said he had personal information about india launching air strikes. (http://www.hindu.com/2008/12/07/stories/2008120757500100.htm). All he stated was that India would be justified in this. *Hypocrisy "My name and the name of the well-known lawyer Prashant Bhushan have come up several times. At one point, while interviewing a former police officer, Arnab Goswami turned to the camera: "Arundhati Roy and Prashant Bhushan," he said. "I hope you are watching this. We think you are disgusting." For a TV anchor to do this in an atmosphere as charged and as frenzied as the one that prevails today amounts to incitement, as well as threat, and would probably in different circumstances have cost a journalist his or her job." A Roy, the uber fighter for individual rights and freedom of speech, does not like it when a TV anchor calls her disgusting. * Jumping to conclusions "The Lashkar has denied involvement, but remains the prime accused. According to the police and intelligence agencies, the Lashkar operates in India through an organization called the "Indian Mujahideen." Two Indian nationals, Sheikh Mukhtar Ahmed, a Special Police Officer working for the Jammu and Kashmir Police, and Tausif Rehman, a resident of Kolkata in West Bengal, have been arrested in connection with the Mumbai attacks. So already the neat accusation against Pakistan is getting a little messy." She is almost stating that Pakistan is not the culprit in this, where as every other investigative organization have more or less announced that Pakistanis were involved in this. * Justification for the act "Through the endless hours of analysis and the endless op-ed essays, in India at least, there has been very little mention of the elephants in the room: Kashmir, Gujarat, and the demolition of the Babri Masjid." She constantly tries to justify this terrorist act, each terrorist act should be viewed in its singularity, Do I agree that what happened in Gujarat is terrorism? YEs I do, and who ever started it should get the same punishments as and if we get the real lynchpins behind this mumbai tragedy. If we start justifying present acts on past, then there is no end to that cycle. We can do this all day and all our lives. Why Mumbai - Cos of Gujarat Why Gujarat - bcos of mumbai blasts why mumbai blasts - because of babri masjid and keep on going. Arundhati has few enemies, the US, the UK, Israel, Indian government, big corporations not necessarily in that order, and she is smart enough to twist any incident in a way that one of these entities are to be blamed. "We had the death of former Prime Minster V. P. Singh, the hero of Dalits and lower castes, and the villain of upper caste Hindus pass without a mention." This statement takes the cake, you will be hard pressed to find anybody who considers VP singh as a hero.

Very true statement Hardcore fundamentalists on either side is a big problem for India. The country really needs more balanced and tolerant people (be it hindu/muslim or christians...) it does not mean terrorism need not be controlled. ofcourse the fight against terrorism needs to be done strongly. but does not mean we just start abusing and be biased against our own countrymen because of his/her community.

Dont put words in my mouth. I dont personally support bifurcation and would not have voted for it. HOWEVER - if you conduct a poll, then allow people to vote without fear and vote their choice. You cannot "instill fear" and force people to vote the way YOU (or even I) WANT them to vote. Else, DONT CONDUCT THE POLL - you conduct it AND want the result you want. Thats stupidity. Why have it in the first place?

Is there a single debate from past that you can point me to where you or your self styled secular friends got even close to proving me wrong on factual basis ? Just because this site crawls with people of your denomination and can shout long and hard does not amount to evidence.
Man, you really gotto be kidding. Have you ever seen ANY thread either from me or from my 'self styled secularist’ friends, glorifying Muslims or denigrading Hinduism? OTOH, you and your right-wing junta routinely shout your throat hoarse with all your right-wing propaganda and you accuse ‘us’ of shouting long and hard! Anyways, I am done arguing with you. You have your point of view, I have mine. Its clear as daylight that neither of us can convince the other about the relative merits and demerits of our own POVs. So, lets just give this a pass, shall we?

There is too much single minded hate agenda some here propagate under the guise of Hindutvas. Just be more balanced folks. Live and let live. Be more willing to accomodate people of different community, rather than be narrow minded. Give it a thought, even if you dont accept it now. PS: And again, dont mistake this as 'softness' towards terrorism. Try to see the difference between two different things.

Remember the "I will not allow critical examination of Islam even if it means burying uncomfortable facts" saga you were championing not long ago ?
Err no, that isn’t because I love Islam or anything, but the rules of this site clearly states that individual posters should NOT use it for their propaganda purposes. If some poster starts a thread bashing Hindusim, Christianity or Sikhism or any other –Ism that’s out there, I will bar that too. That’s what am supposed to do, as a Moderator – Enforce rules, without favor. Of course, you’ve never heard of the last part have you?
