fineleg Posted December 29, 2008 Author Posted December 29, 2008 To all expert Maulvis in software, My new laptop's anti-virus will expire in next 26 days as per the reminder I get when I start it. Basically it came with a 3-month Norton Internet security softaware when I purchased it. Now it asks me to renew it, but whenever I click on renewal I am re-directed to Norton website which asks me to pay some Jaziya money. So I contacted a guy who assembles PCs, he gave a CD for antivirus named "Panda" -- I wonder if this is good since name sounds like a Chinese. Can anyone advise? Also based on advise of Maulvi DomainK and other learned Maulanas, AVG is free, so I will try AVG, but can you tell me what else I need to install apart from free available AVG to protect my laptop from jehaad of spyware, malware and other internet generated pious threat. Also I sometimes visit haraam websites, so some recommendation is appreciated. Dont visit Pak passion :D
Lord Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 i installed AVG free.n it scanned my comp for 4 hours n detected only 7 infections.still my comp is running as slow as ever:(( but there is something called Registry Easy,which i also installed,it detected 8562 infections:nervous:with 6000 being "shared DLL's sections".but it cannot remove them since its a trial version.can someone tell wat is this n wat i should do?i am really a novice at all this.
DomainK Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 FYI avg free has become the highest downloaded software on cnet. If i am not wrong, its not the first time. rox, avg is an av and it will not detect any troubled registry keys unless it is a support for a potentially dangerous application. But a registry scanner will report broken links and any key that is out of place but not necessarily potentially dangerous. Do one thing, post a screenshot of your task manager if you want to. I can try and help you if i get to see the processes on your Computer.

Holysmoke Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Why is your CPU usage 100%? when u do cntrl alt del , sort by cpu usage and see whats using the CPU so much edit.. didnt see u were scanning while u took the ss try ccleaner.. i think it fixes registry also..

Creating several processes takes up lot of OS resources (since each process will have its own control block in the kernel to save registers, file pointers). Moreover, it will also add overhead of context switching and TLB flushes when you click from one tab to the other. Are you sure that some of CHROME.EXE processes are not defunct/zombie ?:blink::blink:

If the browser is stuck one tab in a javascript (which happens often), unlike IE or FF, chrome's other tabs keep functioning smoothly. Besides Google is looking at bridging the gap between desktop applications and web application (to a certain extent) which can not be done if the tabs are not independent of each other. However the chrome processes are supposed to be light. Its the lightest browser around right now. rox, I will go through the processes sometime later today.

I have never used Avira but I have heard good things bout it.

MY pc was hit badly with syware and adware and I downloaded this and installed it. It detected all bad things in my pc, but refused to remove them unless I paid. And then it started giving me uncountable popups asking me to pay and get rid of the bad guys. I tried to uninstall it and it refused to go (like Norton). It took me a few hours to get rid of it and install lavasoft and get the job done. Then I called the friend who had recommended it and he said that spyware doctor worked only if you have paid for the premier version. That was long time ago, I hear it has changed now.

Our instaead of using windows you can always swithc operationg system which would make it btetter for you as eith er linux or apple would be better particuallry linux as you dont get virusues and linux is free and its the best OS for programming as well as customising your own user interface ie the desktop which is cool and very reliable as well, or apple which is very fancy and quite more expensive but worth it compared to windows. sorry about this, have had too many of thse arguments at uni.

Light on resources, very efficient and damn well updated definitions. Anri-spyware: Cant think of anything better than lavasoft in the free category. Also try yahoo. If you download and install yahoo toolbar, you will find a button for anti-spyware. Click on it to download and install it. Everything happens from the toolbar itself. Its quite good. domaink, which version of AVG are you using? I keep reading 7.5 was great, but 8 has become bloated, resource intensive and too slow to scan. Also, have u tried Avira or Avast too?

Also, have u tried Avira or Avast too? I guess you read the reviews on comodo forum. Comodo is a competitor to avg. They have their own PC protection system. I am using 7.5. And I am not upgrading to 8 as of now. The virus definitions remain the same, so I dont have to upgrade. AVG 8 comes with more features and is indeed heavier on the resources compared to 7.5 but still much lighter than Norton and McAfee and most other AVs.
