Duleep Trophy 2008-2009

Name him in the squad unless he makes himself unavailble officially. He is a contracted player of BCCI and Dhoni knows that very well. The selectors know it too. In fact everyone knows it. This is a rare occasion when Indian players get to play domestic cricket. The selectors should try everything to not let this opportunity go waste!!
Well, Dhoni needs to have some responsibility to respond back to selectors. If he thinks he is beyond all this, then selectors should question MSD.

West Zone Jaffer leads strong West Zone batting line-up Cricinfo staff January 19, 2009 Wasim Jaffer has been named the captain of the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy. Jaffer, who led Mumbai to their 38th Ranji Trophy title, heads a formidable line-up, consisting of some of the leading performers this season. Gujarat offspinner Mohnish Parmar has been not considered for selection after recent tests on his bowling action, conducted at the Australian Institute of Sports in Canberra, turned out unfavourable. Parmar told the Mumbai Mirror he had not been informed about the verdict of the tests in Australia, with officials telling him all was fine. "My life and my livelihood depend on cricket and one report can destroy all that," he said. "I really thought I had a chance of making it to the Indian team especially when Harbhajan got injured. There is no other off-spinner in the country who has taken as many wickets in the domestic season as I have. I guess that AIS report has done me in." Parmar is the leading wicket-taker in first-class games in the country this season, with 52 wickets in 11 games at 19.42, including 41 at 19.53 apiece in the Ranji Trophy - one less the best of 42 taken by Dhawal Kulkarni and Ravindra Jadeja. He had been picked for the India A team and the Challenger Trophy earlier in the season. Parmar has corrected his action in the past, after the ICC asked the BCCI to conduct a review following the Under-19 World Cup in 2006. Mumbai's Ramesh Powar and Baroda's Rajesh Pawar are the spinners in the 15-man squad. Powar, an offspinner, took 34 wickets in nine games at 26.14, and played a key role in Mumbai's success, and the left-arm spinner Pawar had 20 wickets from his six games at 28.80. Kulkarni, Sidharth Trivedi, Samad Fallah and Ajitesh Argal are the other specialist bowlers in the squad. The side's strongest suit though is its batting, with Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara - the top three run-getters in the Ranji Trophy this season - in its ranks. They will be joined by two other strong performers in Kedar Jadhav and Bhavik Thakkar - both scored over 600 and averaged over 70 in the Ranji Trophy. Parthiv Patel, the team's vice-captain, will keep wicket. West Zone's first match is the semi-final against East Zone at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, which starts on January 29. West Zone squad: Wasim Jaffer (capt), Parthiv Patel (wk), Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Kedar Jadhav, Ajay Shrikhande, Bhavik Thakkar, Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Sidharth Trivedi, Samad Fallah, Ramesh Powar, Rajesh Pawar, Azharuddin Bilakhia and Ajitesh Argal. Mohnish barred from bowling Special Correspondent Mumbai: Gujarat off-spinner Mohnish Parmar has been barred from playing in the Duleep Trophy tournament. Unfavourable reports of a series of tests conducted at the Australian Institute of Sports (AIS), Canberra, last December has compelled the BCCI to instruct the West Zone selectors not to consider the 20-year-old off-spinner in the team for the inter-zonal tournament. With 41 wickets at 19.53, Parmar was the second highest wicket-taker in the recently-concluded Ranji Trophy competition behind Dhawal Kukrani and Ravindra Jadeja. Parmar would be asked to undergo a rehabilitation programme soon. The West Zone selectors on Monday picked Mumbai off-spinner Ramesh Powar (34 wickets in the 2008-09 Ranji Trophy) and Baroda left-arm spinner Rajesh Pawar as the two specialist spinners for the semifinal match against East Zone to be played at the Brabourne Stadium, Cricket Club of India, here from January 29 to February 1. South Zone and Central Zone Kaif leads Central Zone Cricinfo staff January 20, 2009 VVS Laxman and Mohammad Kaif have been named captains of the South and Central Zone squads for the Duleep Trophy. Both sides will kick off their campaign against each other on January 22 in Bangalore. Laxman only played one Ranji Trophy game this season, but made it a memorable one with 224 against Rajasthan. His presence, along with Rahul Dravid's, make for a formidable South Zone side, which includes Robin Uthappa and S Badrinath. Anoop Pai, Hyderabad's leading run-scorer this Ranji season, has also earned a spot. Five Tamil Nadu players feature. The opener Abhinav Mukund has been rewarded for an impressive Ranji season, in which he scored 856 runs at 85.60, with four centuries, Dinesh Karthik dons the gloves on the basis of a strong season, and L Balaji's 36 wickets at 17.50 apiece in his comeback season have earned him a spot. Badrinath and the offspinner R Ashwin, who took 24 Ranji wickets, are the other TN players. Sreesanth's form and fitness will be closely monitored. He played only one Ranji match for Kerala, in which he took seven wickets against Jharkhand, and will get between one and three games to prove himself. Pragyan Ojha, selected to tour Sri Lanka with India's ODI side, adds depth to South's spin department. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Tanmay Srivastava, Uttar Pradesh's leading wicket-taker and run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy, have been included in the Central squad, along with state-mate Shivakant Shukla, who came to prominence this season. Naman Ojha is the wicketkeeper and Piyush Chawla and Murali Kartik make up the spin component. RP Singh, ignored for the Sri Lanka tour, has been included. The Duleep Trophy is yet another chance for Kaif, who scored 529 runs in the Ranji Trophy, to stake his claim for re-selection to the national side. After captaining UP to their third Ranji final in three seasons, Kaif recently told Cricinfo he was still hopeful. South Zone squad: VVS Laxman (capt), S Badrinath, Abhinav Mukund, Robin Uthappa, Rahul Dravid, Arjun Yadav, Dinesh Karthik (wk), R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, L Balaji, Sreesanth, R Vinay Kumar, Saurabh Bandekar, Suresh M, Anoop Pai. Central Zone squad: Mohammad Kaif (capt), Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Anureet Singh, Robin Bist, Piyush Chawla, Faiz Fazal, Yere Goud, Murali Kartik, Naman Ojha (wk), Pankaj Singh, Parvinder Singh, Jalaj Saxena, Shivakant Shukla, RP Singh, Tanmay Srivastava. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think South zone's team is the best team, both batting and bowling wise and they should win the Duleep trophy easily this time! Had Sehwag, Gambhir and Ishant played for North, they could be strong contenders. But it is a pity that all of them will be playing in SL in a meaningless ODI series.

Reg: Monish Parmar: Can BCCI appoint some specialist and try to rectify (again) his action. If he is good, we should not let him go waste.

^^ he basically dig his own grave.. why wud anyone want to model murali's action...and he was even proudly saying tht in a TV interview.. wat a stupid ***....
ok, but he is young and prolly has made a mistake now - BCCI can help him hopefully. Question: If Parmar is found wanting, why is Chucklitharan still being allowed to bowl? Ban him! He chucks, and it is apparent.

I think you know nothing about this topic. And its very apparent. Parmar's case is totally different from Muralis. He should be banned with that action. And its not as if he'll get all those wickets with a different action. He relies on it for the doosra and other deliveries.

South Zone squad: VVS Laxman (capt), S Badrinath, Abhinav Mukund, Robin Uthappa, Rahul Dravid, Arjun Yadav, Dinesh Karthik (wk), R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, L Balaji, Sreesanth, R Vinay Kumar, Saurabh Bandekar, Suresh M, Anoop Pai. That's a very good team. Bad on bowling tho. Should have gone with the tried and tested Joshi .

So the squads are: East Zone: Shiv Sunder Das (capt), RR Parida, Manoj Tiwary, Wriddhiman Saha, Ashok Dinda, Ranadeb Bose, Dibyendu Chakrabarty, Niranjan Behera, Basanth Mohanty, Haladhar Das (wk), Anand Katti, Krishna Das, Saurabh Tiwary, Tushar Saha, Jayanta Debnath North Zone: A Chopra (captain), R Dewan, V Kohli, S Dhawan, S Sohal, Sangram Singh, Sarandeep Singh, R Bhatia, A Kakkar, U Kaul, A Mishra, C Nanda, P Awana, M Goni, V.S. Malik, S Beigh. Standbyes: R Inder, Gagandeep, Y Singh and Sunny Singh. West Zone: Wasim Jaffer (capt), Parthiv Patel (wk), Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Kedar Jadhav, Ajay Shrikhande, Bhavik Thakkar, Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Sidharth Trivedi, Samad Fallah, Ramesh Powar, Rajesh Pawar, Azharuddin Bilakhia and Ajitesh Argal. Central Zone: Mohammad Kaif (capt), Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Anureet Singh, Robin Bist, Piyush Chawla, Faiz Fazal, Yere Goud, Murali Kartik, Naman Ojha (wk), Pankaj Singh, Parvinder Singh, Jalaj Saxena, Shivakant Shukla, RP Singh, Tanmay Srivastava. South Zone: VVS Laxman (capt), S Badrinath, Abhinav Mukund, Robin Uthappa, Rahul Dravid, Arjun Yadav, Dinesh Karthik (wk), R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, L Balaji, Sreesanth, R Vinay Kumar, Saurabh Bandekar, Suresh M, Anoop Pai. ***************************** I think South zone's squad is the best one with good bowling and batting. West has a powerful batting line up but lacks in bowling firepower. Has South chosen Uthappa ahead of Vijay as opener? If yes, then what kind of logic does it present? Vijay was good enough to come as India opener but can't find a place in its zonal team? For Central, I believe that RP Singh has opted out and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar has been named in his place. But does anyone notice the dearth of quality bowlers outside the international team in the country? We do not have any quality seamers or spinners coming up. And this is quite concerning!!

Isn't arjun yadav son of some bigshot in Hyderabad cricket association ?
son of Shivlal Yadav...... this is a ridiculous selection. how can you select (or, keep selecting) him if he averages less than 30! And, he's too old anyway. There are so many deserving youngsters....

@chandan, vijay is in the squad on cricinfo....
Where? That is the cricinfo article which I mentioned above. http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/duleeptrophy2008/content/story/387059.html They don't mention Vijay. In fact they go on to expand that 5 TN players are there in the squad: Mukund, Karthik, Balaji, Balaji and Badrinath. Where is Vijay. Please show me the link where it mentions that Vijay is in the squad! Meanwhile, Awana gets ready for Duleep action Vinayak Padmadeo Posted: Jan 20, 2009 at 0045 hrs IST New Delhi : Happy with his first major assignment, Delhi pacer hopes to repeat his Rajkot heroics With 27 wickets in 6 matches, Parvinder Awana’s call up to the North Zone Duleep Trophy squad was almost a certainty, and a ten-wicket haul against Saurashtra on a flat wicket in Rajkot went a long way in establishing his credentials as a fast bowler. Awana will be heading back to the same venue again, and possibly playing the biggest match of his career till now, when North play their semi-final encounter from January 29 against the winner of Central and South Zone match. As he gets through his fitness regime at the Ferozeshah Kotla, Awana reiterates he’s no longer afraid of bowling to the established names in the circuit or bending his back on featherbeds. And he promptly reverts back, rather expectedly, to the Rajkot game again, citing examples of the Delhi dressing room talk that centred purely on Shitshanu Kotak and Cheteshwar Pujara ahead of their crunch game. “I remember there was lot of stress on getting the wicket of Kotak and Pujara and it was almost thrown up as a challenge for the bowlers. I dismissed both Shitanshu Kotak and Ravindra Jadeja twice in the match, and got Pujara in their second innings. Ten-wicket haul in that match is really special for me. Wickets like the one in Rajkot tests a bowler to the maximum. On a seaming wicket, we only have to pitch the ball in the right areas. But on flat pitches, you need to put effort in every delivery and I am that kind of a bowler,†Awana says before stating the obvious. “I am looking forward to play the Duleep game if selected.†He feels that the Mumbai match was the tunraround this season. “The Mumbai match turned the season for me. From there on I was confident of my abilities,†he says. Harolla Express, as he’s nicknamed, was quick to realise the need to keep up the consistency, especially with the likes of Ashish Nehra, Sumit Narhwal, Pradeep Sangwan all competing in the pace bracket. “I concentrated a lot on my fitness this year and the results speak for themselves. I am being able to get into a nice rhythm, he says adding “Badrinath (Delhi team’s physiotherapist) and the support staff played a huge role. Pace vs line and length Awana said last season he was only interested bowling quick but has grown wiser to realise the importance of bowling in the right areas. “Last season I got 12 wickets in 5 matches, but I was only concentrating on bowling fast. But now I know when to bowl full steam or hold myself back and concentrate on bowling good areas,†he added saying, “I have realised the important on bowling in the right areas.†And, ironically for Awana, who first claimed fame by finishing as a finalist in a speedster contest, statistics do support his line-and-length theory. The long and short of Nanda’s career Vinayak Padmadeo Posted: Jan 21, 2009 at 0015 hrs IST New Delhi Leg-spinner uncertain for Duleep Trophy even as he lands a plum IPL contract with Mumbai Indians At 29, Chetnya Nanda isn’t exactly a youngster looking forward to bigger things in life. As things stand for the leg-spinner, though, the good things associated with playing cricket in India — like a chunk of the Indian Premier League pie — have only started coming. Only recently the Delhi all-rounder got a Grade D contract from the BCCI for his last season’s heroics. And now, Nanda has finally made the cut for IPL with the Mumbai Indians, signing up for a one-year contract although an official confirmation from the team is likely only in March. After impressing everyone on the domestic circuit, Nanda is now eyeing the IPL as a road to mass recognition. “It is a very big platform for players like me. A good performance there can work wonders. We all know how doing well in the IPL has changed many things for nobodies who went on to play for India,†he says. Nanda had a dream season last year. Besides winning his first-ever Ranji Trophy title with Delhi, the leg-spinner took a five-wicket haul in the Irani Trophy match against Rest of India, scalping the prized wickets of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. This was the performance, he says, that finally got people interested in him. “The Irani Trophy match got me noticed. May be it was destiny, but that performance changed many things for me,†he says, recalling his five-for in that match. “I won’t like to take names here. But while the guys who were doing really well for us the whole season bombed, I got wickets when it really mattered. And that is the only reason things have finally began to happen for me,†he adds. Despite his performance, it still rankles Nanda that he had to miss out on first-class games in his career. “I got my first 50 wickets in only 12 games, but then I was sidelined (Nanda has only played 30 matches since his debut in 2004-05). But with hard work and performance I have turned things around. Performance cannot be ignored,†he reasons. Elbowed out? This Ranji season, though, has been anything but great for the leggie. He was injured even before the start of the season; when he did play, he could only take 13 wickets in 6 matches. “I know my performance has not been impressive but bowling on flat wickets didn’t help my cause,†he says. After hurting his elbow during training on Monday, he is now struggling again to get fit before North Zone’s Duleep Trophy semi-final against the winners of the match between South and Central Zone. “It’s nothing serious and, in all probability, I will play the Duleep Trophy,†he says. Duleep Trophy: players begin to arrive Bangalore: The South Zone and Central Zone players began to arrive in batches ahead of the Duleep Trophy cricket match commencing at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday. The players had a round of nets on Tuesday evening. In the South Zone squad, the Tamil Nadu players led by Dinesh Karthik arrived early and joined Rahul Dravid and Robin Uthappa, while the Hyderabad players including skipper V.V.S. Laxman will be present on Wednesday’s practice session. Among the Central Zone players, Murali Kartik was one of the first to arrive at the venue and joined teammate and local player Yere Goud. Meanwhile, in the South Zone squad, Shadab Jakati replaced Pragyan Ojha, who has been selected for India’s ODI tour of Sri Lanka, while Vijay Bharadwaj will step in as coach as the earlier appointee Venkatesh Prasad gets busy as the Indian team’s bowling coach. ********************************************* South Zone and Central zone will have a qualifying match. And I have no doubt that Central will be knocked out easily, though cricket is a funny game!!

ok, but he is young and prolly has made a mistake now - BCCI can help him hopefully. Question: If Parmar is found wanting.
Forget about Murali, and concentrate on Parmar because we are concerned about him only. Apprarently BCCI has issued a press release explaining why he was withdrawn/ not picked from Duleep trophy squad: Indian spinner Parmar has suspect bowling action - BCCI By Sanjay Rajan MUMBAI, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Indian off-spinner and test prospect Mohnish Parmar, who has a similar bowling style to Sri Lankan spinning great Muttiah Muralitharan, must rectify his action to correct flaws, India's cricket board said. Parmar, 20, emerged as the most successful in Indian first-class cricket this season with a tally of 52 wickets from just 11 matches. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sent him to Australia last month to get his action reviewed and based on the report has directed him to undergo rehabilitation before returning to competitive cricket. "I'll have to correct my action, else I won't be allowed to bowl," the player told the Times of India newspaper on Wednesday. Employing a similar bowling action to the supple-wristed Muralitharan, the world's highest wicket-taker who has courted controversy throughout his career, helped Parmar initially. He imparts a lot of spin on the ball and bowls the doosra effectively, foxing Australia test opener Simon Katich during last year's 'A' series game in Bangalore. "One tends to put more revolution on the ball with an action like that, you also derive better bounce," former test batsman Aunshuman Gaekwad, who was Parmar's state coach, told Reuters. The legality of Muralitharan's action was questioned until it was put down to hyper-extention of his elbow caused by a physical deformity and he was ruled not to be violating the rules. "He (Parmar) always bowled with that action and has been very, very effective," Gujarat state association official Hitesh Patel said. Bend Game? By Abhishek Singh and Prashant Menon Posted On Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 04:19:04 AM Offie Parmar faces uncertain future c212.jpg Right-arm finger spinners are a rare breed in India. For a confirmation of the stark reality look no further than India’s squad of 15 chosen for the one-dayers in Sri Lanka. But one talent that did ignite hope, now finds himself on the throes of a career crisis. Mohnish Parmar, who was hoping to replace an injured Harbhajan Singh, doesn’t even find a place in the West Zone Duleep Trophy team. Like Muttiah Muralitharan (whose action he has modelled) Parmar has battled chucking allegations throughout his career. “How can this be?” a crest-fallen Parmar said when told about his exclusion. “Just a few days back I was told that I am an India material, and now I am not good enough for West Zone.” Merit is not the touchstone for his exclusion; Parmar claimed 52 first class wickets in 11 matches in the current season at an incredible strike rate of 20 runs per wicket. It’s the bowling action that has undone him yet again. Last December he had travelled to Canberra’s Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) for a three-dimensional analysis of his action after it was reported in the Gujarat vs Punjab Ranji Trophy match at the Motera stadium. It appears that the AIS report doesn’t make pleasant reading. Surendra Bhave, one of the national selectors, who is also the chairman of West Zone selection committee, confirmed as much: “Parmar has not been included in the West Zone squad because of the AIS report about his bowling action. However, this is good for the boy as he will get a chance to correct his action. His time will come.” Parmar, though, was perplexed when told about the Canberra report. “I was not told anything by the authority. I kept asking everyone about the report but I was told that everything was fine. My life and my livelihood depend on cricket and one report can destroy all that. “I really thought I had a chance of making it to the Indian team especially when Harbhajan got injured. There is no other off-spinner in the country who has taken as many wickets in the domestic season as I have. I guess that AIS report has done me in.” National Cricket Academy coach Bharat Arun, who accompanied Parmar to Australia, too, wasn’t aware of the report. Uncertain Premise Parmar has been on a shaky ground even since the under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka three years ago when his action first came under scrutiny. He has had stints with many illustrious coaches but the question that needs to be asked is: Was he made to undergo a comprehensive rehabilitation programme? Previous analysis of his action had provided a reasonable level of suspicion. A video analysis was conducted on Parmar on May 28, 2008, under the watch of Director of Operations Dave Whatmore, Bharat Arun and video analyst S Singh. Using the software, Silicon Coach, Parmar’s action was filmed from three angles: front, side and back. It was a two-dimensional analysis and his elbow angles were recorded between 9 AM and 12 PM, possibly to assess whether the arm inclined further as the day wore on. The report indicated that his action had a greater deviation than the 15 degree, specified as norm by the International Cricket Council. A source said, “A two-dimensional analysis can often be inconclusive and it would have been dangerous to arrive at the wrong conclusion. We had to send him to Australian Institute of Sport to have a clear picture from a three-dimensional analysis.” For now, Parmar’s career is going nowhere. It is not certain whether he will be allowed to play domestic cricket. And what about the wickets he had this season? Will they be wiped off his slate? It’s ironical that Muralitharan, who has had to live with the same stigma, would have turned up for Bengal. Two men with a nearly similar action: one has had a glittering career, and the other’s seems to have ended even before it could take off. Former players support beleaguered Parmar By Prasanth Menon and Abhishek Singh Posted On Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 02:30:49 AM Men who have played for India at the highest level are disgusted with the way the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has treated Gujarat off-spinner Mohnish Paramar who has been excluded from the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy. After the BCCI instructed selectors not to consider Parmar for the Indian team as an injured Harbhajan Singh’s replacement following a damning report from the Australian Institute of Sports, where the youngster’s bowling action was examined by Australian bio-mechanical experts, former India skipper Ajit Wadekar observed: “The way this kid is being treated, is disheartening. From being an India material, the guy doesn’t even get a look in the zonal squad. Now, what will happen to all those wickets he has claimed this season? If he had a suspect bowling action, the authorities should have stopped him at the junior level itself.” BCCI clueless Off-spinner Rajesh Chauhan, who was eased out of international cricket due to his bowling action, said, “History is being repeated. I know exactly just how difficult things will be for Parmar. If he had a suspect action, he should have been stopped earlier. I am not sure whether the BCCI top brass knows how to handle these issues. They let things pass and finally pull the plug when a player is on the verge of India selection or is already playing for the country.” Former left-arm seamer Dheeraj Parsana made a pertinent point while comparing Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan and Parmar. He said, “You support the Sri Lankan board and allow Muralitharan to bowl in international matches. You hail Murali as an all time great. “Now, you have your own kid with an action similar to Murali and you keep him away from cricket. These are double standards.” Anxious Parmar Parmar seems anxious to correct whatever the fault in his action and will be looking to get back in action as soon as possible. That may also have something to do with another bit of cricket news: the fact that the promising youngster has been snapped up by the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. Earlier this month, an official of the Kolkata Knight Riders confirmed the cricket news that the Mohnish Parmar would be included in the KKR team for the second IPL season. Perhaps he is looking to get a clean chit for his bowling action so that there is no obstacle to his playing the IPL, which may be a great platform for him to display is talents as a potential match winner: not only does he take wickets, he is stingy about giving runs as well, making him someone to keep an eye out for.

its a shame but hopefully he will get through with it and still be an effective bowler.he is a good prospect. http://inhome.rediff.com/cricket/2009/jan/21parmar-to-undergo-action-rehab-programme.htm Parmar to undergo action rehab programme January 21, 2009 23:32 IST Gujarat off-spinner Mohnish Parmar, who is alleged to have a suspect bowling action, will undergo a rehabilitation programme at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore to correct it. "I have been asked to attend a rehabilitation programme by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at the NCA from January 23," Parmar told PTI on Wednesday. At NCA, Parmar will be guided by a bio-mechanist from Australia [images] who will help improve his bowling action. Parmar, whose bowling action resembles that of Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan [images], ended as the second highest wicket taker in the recently concluded Ranji Trophy claiming 41 wickets from just 8 matches, with a best of 6/51 and an economy rate of 2.34. The BCCI had sent the 20-year-old spinner to Australia, last month, to get his action reviewed and based on the report has directed him to undergo a rehabilitation before returning to competitive cricket. Asked whether there were any complaints against his action during the Ranji Trophy, he said, there were some talks going on regarding his action due to which he was sent to Australia.
