I personally like Victorian/Gothic/Colonial architecture so plan on seeing some of those if I can. Free activities are always welcome. Don't care for bars/pubs/clubs/discos/shopping malls or anything of that effect. Not travelling half the world to find something I can find .5 from my house.

You keep talking about gothic inspired architecture and ****, but are you seriously interested in looking at these old buildings? Then you will love south Mumbai. Stuff that is culturally unique to Bangalore and not a plagiarized/knock off/wannabe version of something else that's already out there is what I am looking for. Not travelling half the world to find something I can find .5 from my house. Seriously your definition of culture and my definition of culture is very different.

Yoda-esque Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 I guess Mysore would be good for what are looking for.Apart from that some good places to visit would be Coorg,Chikmagalur,Karwar,Manipal towards the southern side of Karnataka. Hampi too..

But if you are looking for culturally relevant stuff in Bangalore,surely European architecture is not one of its highlights Good to see another observer of Victorian architecture. This is another reason why I want to go Europe so bad, that place is packed with this sort of stuff especially places like Netherlands, Brussels, France and Germany. I have read the link before and its quite fascinating to tell you the truth. I know about the CST/Victoria Terminus. Thats why I decided to stop by Mumbai and give it a visit among other landmarks such as Gateway of India, Taj Hotel and others. Flinders Street Station is absolutely spectacular but in my mind, VT trumps it every time. I plan on spending a fair bit of time exploring this station, see what its like on the inside. From the outside, top marks, 10/10.

You have to be in Europe (Barcelona I can vouch for) for some truely gothic architecture and such stuff. Anyway, how you want to spend your time would depend upon how many days you have. Couple of days, then either look around within Bangalore, or skip it for mysore/coorg/ kind of places around bangalore. If you have good company of 5-6 friends, then one good farm-house-cum-resort (foothills of nilgiri hills/jungles) I can suggest is http://bamboobanks.in/, about 250kms(~6 hrs from Bangalore).... nice huge and scenic place, with some nice excursions around the place.. and excellent hosts and best food. Otherwise, let us know what are the options you have been hearing - and what you are 'dreaming/expecting' - then I can tell you about what you can expect realistically. btw, if you do spend time in Bangalore, and want to have good steak - then go to "Hard Rock cafe" near MG Road. Ambience is as the name suggest - hard rock.. Anyway, you better tell us your options and time frame, and I can tell what to expect realistically.

Since one of my relative is in Chennai, I thought, why not go to Bangalore since its near by. It would just be myself and another relative (male, ~30 odd). It would be 2 - 3 days max thats why I am looking at places in the CBD. akshayxyz Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 ^ man, then forget the architecture stuff or just drop your expectations to bottom in that sense :)... In Bangalore, expect desi southie-stuff. How do you want to spend time? How you plan to move around - personal car I guess? personally, I am not very fond of roaming around in the city. There must be handful of monuments/museums though. even in that case Mysore palace and Sri-rangapatna (15-20 kms before Mysore) and a Tipu-Sultan palace nearby - will be better. - And that can be covered within a day. At max one day for any worth-a-visit monument within bangalore ( I have not been to any within Bangalore, so it must not be something very popular ;)). Another day you can spend by - driving to_and_back SravanBelagula - one huge stature of Lord Mahavir and then if u go further then u can cover - Halebedu.. some nice ancient temple.. I have heard - Tirupati temple is also a sort of must visit, but you need to plan well and ahead... But - if you want to relax for 2-3 days at one place, amidst scenic natural beauty - then one of the best bet is that Bamboo Banks thing I suggested earlier, or some good resort in Coorg...Also you will have to consider whether those places are nearer to Chennai e..g I assume Nilgiri Hills (ooty and such stuff) are equidistant from Chennai and Bangalore. Relistically - if you have 2-3 days ( a weekend I guess) - then considering you have to travel back to Chennai..and you want to touch Bangalore.. then you can manage only one weekend-getaway.. like mysore and around...Or some similar option within 250kms of Bangalore...And this will be quite a lot of driving for 2-3 days.
