WTF is manamohana doing?? :omg: http://www.rediff.com/news/2009/jan/08pbd-pm-vows-support-to-palestine.htm

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh [images] on Thursday voiced India's strong condemnation of the Israeli strikes in Gaza and expressed the hope that the international community will get together to restore peace and normalcy in the region. In his first public statement on the ongoing strikes, he said India strongly condemned these incidents and regrets the loss of many innocent lives. "It is our hope that the international community will come together to restore peace and normalcy," he said while inaugurating the seventh edition of the three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Chennai. He also declared India's "unstinted and unwavering support to the just cause of Palestinians". The strikes have caused a lot of tensions in the region, where he said a number of Indian workers were living. At least 660 Palestinians, including over 200 children and nearly 100 women, have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Israel launched its military offensive on December 27. Close to 3,000 others have been wounded in the attacks.

I am quite positive that India is supporting Israel. No one in their right mind wouldn't. That said, this was quite an unnecessary statement made. Israel is apparently also treating innocent civilians in their hospitals. They're giving warnings in the civilian areas before they strike, etc. They know what they're doing. We'd do better to stay away from making comments.

Maintaning diplomatic silence is the best way to react to situations that may be "wrong" in a perfect world, suits our interests in the real world. Why make such lousy statements, that too by a PM, against a country which is one of our strong allies!!!

Not to mention that the demand for Palestine in a two nation theory is perfectly justified, even besides that India supporting Palestine is a politically expedient move. The most important reason being to keep the Arab countries if not on our side then not totally against regarding Pakistan and Kashmir.

A few points to ponder: Palestine has consistently backed India's stand on Kashmir. India needs leverage amongst Islamic countries - necessary to keep the nuisance created by Pakistan (which sees itself as a "leader" of Islamic countries) in check. India needs to condemn the loss of civilian life and property - as the largest democracy with ambition of being a super-power, it is an absolute must. Israel probably understands the political dilemmas faced by India.
the bolded one is a very good point u make

I am not sold that our politicians arent generating such sound bites just to be politically correct. US & Israel know that India is in private agreement with them. There are numerous data points that point in that directoion. 1) India purchases a lot of its military & other security equipments/gears from US & Israel 2) Israel has openly declared support for India against Pakistan 3) US has stood by India in its fight against terror. There is no significant advantage for Israel in having India endorse these strikes. India does not have a permanent seat in UNSC to control Israel's actions. With US & UK backing them, Russia indifferent, they got enough lobby to press their agenda forward. OTOH, it makes sense for India to not back Israel openly for many reasons: 1) Obvious intent of not hurting Muslims in India, who represent a significant vote bank. Whichever party is in power has to be mindful of that 2) Earn some good will from the Arab world => Oil to fuel our economy and any possible help with the Kashmir issue. I think US understands India's situation & by induction Israel will.

Very good lip service from singh I fully sympathize with Israel They are fighting militants - Hamas; our equivalent of Kashmirs separatists - and these dimwit militants are supported by terrorist states - iran and their bosom buddies, in our case porkistan all israel is doing is self defense and is sending a clear message that only idiots in the arab world dont understand - i.e. DONT F WITH US

O dear the supporter of Hams is right behind them and all who support Hamas.
dsr/KT, there is a difference between supporting Haman and a separate Palestinian State - I support the latter but not the former.

Everyone who thinks Hamas is a terrorist organization( rightly so, coz they kill innocent Israeli lives), please stand up and declare with a straight face that U.S govt is also a genocidal govt. for waging an illegal war that claimed 2,00,000 innocent Iraqi and 5000 coalition soldiers lives just for the sake of Oil. I'd also like them to pull-up the Israeli govt. for committing war-crimes as defined by the Geneva commission 'by bombing unarmed villages, locations and buildings' that has led to 550 Palestinian civilian deaths so far ( If you dont believe, go check it out for youself) Its very easy to label so-and-so as so-and-so... The world isnt as black and white as some people claim to be. There is no good guy and the bad guy... or the evil and pure, as the West would like to claim.. There's only the bigger criminal and lesser criminal, depending who's side you're on.

Even I was against the Iraq war which I consider as a fake war , but where was the Muslim outrage when Saddam was committing outrage against kurds and Shias. Heck , Saddam was far more genocidal then US government. While I support Palestinian cause , you need to understand that Israel has a right to self defense against fanatical Sharia loving terrorist outfit like Hamas which uses civilians as Human Shield. They fire their rockets from residential areas with local support. So , collateral damage is unavoidable. It's a fact that Palestinians and muslims in general are getting more and more fundo and they will lose the support of people who were originally sympathetic to their cause , somebody like myself. I would not support a Islamic republic of Palestine. I don't mind supporting secular muslims and Palestinians in particular , but if they want to implement Sharia , then I would support Israel to bomb them to oblivion. These fundamentalists will eventually gang up against us. So , why bother supporting them ?

The FACT of the matter is, what Israel is doing right now in Palestine is systematic slaughter of innocent Palestinian lives. They say they wont stop until they have completely disabled Hamas' ability to fire Katusha rockets into Israeli settlements and border Israeli towns.. Thats just a ridiculous claim. They tried it in 2006, when they launched another series of attacks to hurt Hezbollah. It didnt work and Hezbollah is back to its old military strength. And the conditions Israel is putting forward to having a ceasefire is also unteneble. They want international observers posted in the Gaza - Egyptian border to prevent arms smuggling. No way will Hamas ever accept to it. How will an organization ever deprive itself the ability to strike at the enemy state? What Israel is doing now, by bombing Palestinian schools, hospitals and universities, is creating a completely new generation of radicalized Palestinians who will be more eager than ever to get their own back at Israel.
