mainhoonna Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I am a doctor starting a 3 mth term in intensive care and though I look forward to learning new stuff,a part of me is worried and apprehensive.It is to do with working with new people,worry about being good enough to manage critically ill people.Being a doctor can sometimes be v .stressful.I am curious though, is it the same with all professions ?Have you guys ever been scared at work.
DomainK Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I think in your profession a bit of fear is good. Fear makes you careful and attentive. Stops you from making mistakes. I am sure you will settle down to a level of comfort soon.

Well, it did at points in the beginning, but not like your profession might. I am into advertising. I remember being **** scared and sweating one day when I was a noob and my boss made me give a big presentation to the board of a very big company. I was again very scared when I was given charge of a sinking account. But largely, no, my work does not scare me. On the contrary, I enjoy my work.

Sometimes. An example. Being in the arena Business Intelligence many of work involves working with Finance and Accounting Group. This also involves generating the P&L statements. It used to be a fun work earlier but now every month it involves generating them with an eye on Stock Market. This has been true for atleast 4-5 years now. Even though I have little to do with the data or the actual business itself I am quite aware that the reports that I generate for powers that be often leads for many individuals to lose their jobs. This is almost always covered as "strategic decision" but in actuality this means cutting costs and "boosting" the profits thus. The final goal is always the share holders and market and I often wonder about my own role. xx

Sometimes, people working in the same field for 30 years are present, and they can really hit you hard in the 5-10 minutes reserved for questioning. Plus, they have an ability to see things in ways not imaginable by noobs and hence it is really tough to answer the queries immediately. 2). When I am asked to review a paper which written by people much senior to me. Now this is even more unnerving because I have to write everything down and tell the journal what I think is right and wrong with the paper. The whole reputation thing is at sake here., etc. In case the authors decide to fight back, then you rather be prepared for a long drawn battle..,haha.
