Ram Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 In my book, his best performances so far have been, in no particular order; Lagaan Dil Se Taal ‘Thiruda Thiruda’ But, if I am asked to pick one, I’d go for ‘Thiruda Thiruda’. For a movie that came as far way back as ’94, its music was astounding and atleast a decade and a half ahead of its time. Besides, the BG score for that movie was one of the best ever.

Ram Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Taal stands out for me because it was more of a musical than a movie.. The whole movie revolved around its music, much like '1942 a Love story'. That is quite odd for a mainstream Indian movie.

Coming on the 50th anniversary of our Independence, that song had every chance fizzling out, but Rahman managed to capture the true feeling of patriotism and the passion that comes with it quite unbelievably. I get goose-bumps listening to the song even today, and I don’t how many 1000s of times I must have listened to it. Such is the power of its music and the emotions it manages to kindle.

Eik surja nikla tha kuch paara bikhra tha eik aandhi aayi thi jab dil se aah nikali thi dil se reeeeee Although Dil se would never rank in top 25 Hindi albums of all time. Now that I think about it, ARR as great as he is, would find it hard to get in pantheons of great music directors. Harsh but true.

I know it is harsh, and I would also understand that youngsters would think it is kind of hanging on to the past etc. However I would also say that albums like Dil Se, Taal, Yaadein would never be counted in the same breath as Pakeezah, Yaadon Ki Baraat, Julie, Aandhi etc. Of course there is the whole it depends on the person etc thingy,

Well other than Kapil Dev. And RD Burman. And Zeenat Aman. Damn seems we agreed on a lot of things earlier! Time will tell but pretty hard to beat RDB Waisey aaj koun sa show chal raha hai matinee mey :--D RDB is King, and not the Singh is King variety. Matinee mein Zakhmi chal reha hai. Sunil Dutt starred with one of my favorite Holi songs - Aali re aali re holi . Saale aajkal to koi gaana hi nahin banta festivals ka. Abhi 26th January aayegi aur sab 70s ke gaane bajenge, a la Dekho Veer Jawaanon apne khoon pe ye ilzaam na aaye. Zakhmee also had another beautiful song. Holy Baba Tendulkar is the greatest player ever (in Peddar Road and other South Mumbai area) Back to ARR, who is the bigger hit in terms of sheer popularity amongst desis in your college/area? ARR or Reshamiyya. Soch ke batana. I mean kiske gaane jyaada repeat mode pe chalte hain?

I cannot remember the last time I heard a himesh song, but I can remember the last time I heard a ARR song. In terms of sheer popularity, Rahman wins hands down. Himesh came close for a week, thats it. You cannot compare ARR with Himesh Lurks... One is humble, universally liked, universally acclaimed.. The other is an attitude bhara knob, who most say cant sing...
