IPL season II auction today: Emphasis on strategic buys Abhijeet Kulkarni, Hindustan Times Panaji, February 06, 2009 First Published: 12:34 IST(6/2/2009) Last Updated: 09:09 IST(6/2/2009) About a year ago, when the eight IPL franchises gathered in Mumbai for the first ever auction of cricketers, close to Rs 100 crores were spent in procuring the services of 75 players. But Champions Team Jaipur proved that more than spending power, it was a strategic buying plan that mattered on the field. This time around, all the teams are likely to follow that lead when 50 players go under the hammer for 17 slots at the Taj Aguada ballroom here on Friday. With all teams having a specific number of slots to fill within a specific amount of money, team officials were seen in huddles, busy finalising their strategy for Friday. Though every team was initially given a cap of $2 million for the auction, the IPL governing council finalised the actual amount available to each team after studying the expenses on players they signed during the transfer window. IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi said the list has been circulated to all teams. “One thing is sure. This time it will be more about strategy. The teams have signed players for three years last season. So they have particular spots to fill and have to study the availability of the players," Modi said. "What is more interesting is that if any team does not spend the money available to them in the auction, their purse will automatically come to zero and they cannot buy any other player later," he added. Though none of the team officials were willing to speak about their plans, Team Kolkata are clearly in the dock having $1.21 mn to spend on the lone spot and will have to forego their chance of bidding for a player in the top bracket. Only Team Chennai has the luxury of a full purse and three slots available to complete their quota of 10 foreigners. The auction process is also likely to be a low-key affair as compared to last year with the likes of Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Mukesh Ambani likely to give it a slip. Clarke’s IPL future doubtful Michael Clarke, who withdrew from the second season, is unlikely to play any part in the tournament next year too, according to Lalit Modi. While the Australian media reported that Clarke opted out citing a busy schedule, Modi said his decision was prompted by his unhappiness over his base price. “I don’t see him playing any part this year and even next year since all teams will have the players contracted for two years,” Modi said. “Last year we took the risk of promising the players that they would get certain amount irrespective of whether they are bought in the auction or not. “So to reduce the tab on us we allowed reverse auction. But this time we have made no such commitments," he added.
