cochise Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Were it the Indian cricket team that went, you can bet that the attack would have been ten times as severe and God only knows if anyone would have survived...it would have been used as a ploy to provoke confrontation between India and Pakistan....as was the Mumbai attack.

An advance of five policemen? Where were the others and why weren't any of the attackers taken down in a serious gunfight? How come all the attackers simply melted away? Surely you need more than a handful of policemen to provide adequate security to such an obvious target in such a state riddled with terrorists...man, something really stinks!!!

Five guards/policemen were killed but not a single terrorist was even injured or captured. How come? 3. Why wasn't the daily route secured. So many armed men were waiting for the bus to pass and the intelligence had no clue? No surveillance what so ever? How come? 4. No back up? No contingency plans if there is an attack? 5. Why was the bus being driven by a normal driver and not a commando? Why did the driver had no back up place to drive to in case of an attack but to the stadium instead? When you are attacked, you just dont take the pre decided and publicly known route. But the driver did not have a clue (though he did a good job). For a long time now Pakistan has been promising the highest possible security to any visiting team- the same security that their president gets. Is this the security? One thing I am sure about.....irrespective of who carried out the attacks, the security was compromised. Because it was virtually non-existent.

SL team was under threat...still they were attacked..

Mushrraf was attacked twice..i think...and each time..he escaped unhurt... threat perception was high for SL team... both roades should have been closed for the team convoy.. police should have been on the both sides of the roads.. i have seen the security of our PM whenever he travels to airport or otherwise...

Perhaps, they want to provoke a response that causes the further destabilisation of Pakistan, whether by isolation, as will happen now in sporting and other matters, or by military confrontation, in the case of the Mumbai attacks (unsuccessful, luckily eh?)? Now, if the Indian team had gone, what a golden opportunity it would have presented to them to bring the two countries into direct conflict. Do you think they would have taken half measures? What you have to wake up to is the fact that these morons want to take over your country and radicalise the entire fabric of it's society...this is their ideological drive. And you know what? It looks like they are winning...swat is not far from Islamabad and it is already under their writ with the government signing peace treaties and what have you. The longer Pakistanis remain in denial of these "morons", the more powerful they will become...and before you know it, these morons will be ruling you.

This is the first time that cricketers have been targeted in a land where the sport is akin to religion. It marks the death of international cricket in Pakistan for the indefinite future, but not just that, which is bad enough. The country's future is looking more and more precarious. We do not know which particular group carried out this attack, but its identity is hardly relevant. The fact is that it took place at a time when three interrelated events had angered a large bulk of the country and provided succour to extremist groups and their patrons. The first is undoubtedly the foolish decision by Washington (backed by Britain) to send more troops to Afghanistan, which has now united all those resisting them in that country and the North-West Frontier province of Pakistan. Instead of searching for a viable exit strategy, Obama has gone for a surge. On several occasions, I have warned that escalating the war in Afghanistan could seriously destabilise Pakistan and its army. Second, Senator Dianne Feinstein's revelation that the US drones being used to target "militants" and "terrorist havens" inside Pakistan were, in fact, being despatched by the US from military and air-force bases inside Pakistan (obviously, with the approval of the Pakistani military and civilian leaders) created mayhem in the country. The shock and dismay should not be underestimated. Half-hearted government denials further fanned the flames. Since many in the country regard Zardari and his cronies running the country as US drones, the anger was multiplied. Domestically, the country is a mess. The People's party has learnt and forgotten nothing. Corruption is rife and stories circulate linking the money being paid by bankers directly to the president's house. Add to this Zardari's refusal to honour an election pledge restoring an independent judiciary, and his decision to manipulate tame judges to disqualify his opponents has not gone down well. The controversy was aggravated by Zardari's move to dismiss the elected government in the country's most populous and strategically important province, the Punjab (capital: Lahore), and impose direct rule, after its chief minister apparently refused to accept a bribe in the shape of a lucrative business deal in return for abandoning the fight to restore the chief justice fired by the military leader over a year ago. The failures of this government and its inability to defend the country's interests or its population from drones or terrorist attacks are paving the way for the return of the army to power as a way of avoiding a serious split within its own ranks. All that is awaited is a green light from the US embassy in Islamabad. Not that this would solve anything, but it might create the illusion of stability for a few months. It's no good Pakistani politicians mumbling that this is "our Mumbai". The fact is that, over the last year, the Zardari government has done a great deal for itself and its clients, but nothing for the people or the country. The more Pakistan drifts, the more opportunities offer themselves to the extremists.

When you give power to the army and other agencies to create terrorism in other countries, then it's bound to come back and bite you in the back side. Pakistan is only reaping what it's been sowing for that past few decades.
