ICL is over?

Recommended Posts

REBEL Kiwi cricketers - including Shane Bond and Daryl Tuffey - have been told they will be released from their Indian Cricket League contracts if they put in a request this week; a move which will allow them to play for the Black Caps. Auckland's Sunday News reports that players contracted to the financially strapped ICL recently received an email from tournament organisers informing them of the option. It's understood Himanshu Mody - the ICL's business head - will fly to Australia to meet ICL executive board member Tony Greig in the next 10 days to discuss the proposal. The move will have no impact on Australia's international sides as the ICL-contracted Aussies had all retired from first-class cricket. If players choose to cut their ties with the rebel league, they will immediately become available for national selection again. Of the former Black Caps in the ICL - who include Bond, Tuffey, Nathan Astle, Craig McMillan, Chris Harris, Andre Adams and Lou Vincent - only the two genuine quicks would interest the New Zealand selectors. But Bond, still New Zealand's best bowler, has talked down any chance of a return to the Black Caps. In contrast it is believed Tuffey is desperate to play for the Caps again. Former Kiwi cricketer Simon Doull led calls for Tuffey to attempt an international comeback. "Daryl Tuffey is certainly good enough to play Test cricket for New Zealand again," Doull said. "If you look at the reasons he was left out of the side a few years back, it was because of a lack of confidence. To me now, he's a guy who is training and playing harder and is more mentally ready to play international cricket. "He could easily come back and do a great job for the Black Caps if he loses his ICL links." http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/cricket/cashstrapped-icl-looks-to-offload-rebel-kiwis/2009/03/28/1237657201172.html Shane Bond could be back :yay:

ICL is over ICL is over

Karachi, March 29: Banned Pakistan all-rounders Abdul Razzak and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan have expressed their desire to play for the national team once again. The duo want to follow in the footsteps of senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf, who yesterday submitted a written document before the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirming that he would end his contract with the league if considered for the national team again. "Razzak and Rana would also be meeting the PCB officials soon to confirm they would leave the ICL if considered for national selection again," a source close to the players said. All the three players were expected to make an official announcement about terminating their contracts with the ICL by next week. Sources said the PCB was also seriously considering the trio`s inclusion in the national team. "It might not be possible for them to play in the one-day series against Australia from April 22 but definitely they are in line to be considered for the Twenty20 World Cup in England in June," one source said.

Hmmm...new turn of events

ICL offers to release New Zealand players The New Zealand players involved in the ICL have received an e-mail from the tournament's organisers stating that they will be released from their contracts if they request for a termination, New Zealand's Sunday News has reported. Justin Vaughan, the chief executive of New Zealand Cricket (NZC), told the paper that if these players end their association with the unofficial league, they will be immediately available for selection to the New Zealand national side. Besides fast bowlers Shane Bond and Daryll Tuffey, the other active New Zealand players who are part of the ICL are allrounder Andre Adams and batsman Lou Vincent. "We wouldn't stand in the way of any players returning to the Black Caps if they aren't tied to the ICL," Vaughan said. "We've made it pretty clear from the start that while we can't select players for New Zealand who are contracted to the ICL, if they end their ties with the league they would be immediately reconsidered for the national side." Senior ICL officials were not available for comment when contacted by Cricinfo. The ICL had cancelled its March-April international programme due to the deepening economic recession and non-availability of Pakistan players. The unauthorised league has also placed on hold its payments to several players pending a performance appraisal. Besides, recent reports have suggested that several Pakistan cricketers who are a part of the Lahore Badshahs, the biggest drawcard of the ICL, want to sever their links with the league and return to international cricket. :yawn2: good riddance
Don't forget that: 1. ICL started the phenomenon that ultimately turned out to be a turning point in international cricket history. 2. A bit of competition is good for everyone- Players, boards, fans and the game itself. With ICL gone, BCCI will sit back fall asleep.

Even a billionaire with an ego like Subash Chandra has his limits. ICL was going to soon enough, people lost interest after the first season as it just wasnt interesting enough played on unknown corporation grounds. The bad thing is that there is no opposition to the megalomaniacs at the BCCI.
