Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell

Like i said, two more test series for him and we'll take it from there.
Bumper. The only problem with that argument is that SRT's performance in Test series has been worse than what it has been in ODI. Look at his last 4 Test series. Sri Lanka in India, 2005/06 [series] Ind 3 5 0 189 109 23 22 37.80 1 0 0 India in Pakistan, 2005/06 [series] Pak 3 3 0 63 26 23 14 21.00 0 0 0 England in India, 2005/06 [series] - 3 5 1 83 34 28* 16 20.75 0 0 0 India in South Africa, 2006/07 [series] SA 3 6 0 199 64 63 44 33.16 0 2 1 So basically 2 series home, 2 series abroad. A fair sample I would say. 12 Tests 534 runs@29.66 Would you want such a player on pure merit in your team?? xxxxx
I know he's been more mediocre in tests, but the key qn is: Do we want SRT to retire from all forms of cricket or is there any cricket left in him ? ODIs demand lot more fitness and there is nothing left for SRT to prove anymore. 2011 world cup is just too far away to be a realistic target. For Tests, I dont think he's aged to a point where he must consider retirement immediately. However, he should not get to play because he says he's fit & ready. His form must warrant a spot in the XI. Tendu has a lot at stake in tests. Finishing at the top, personal milestones (century records, no. of runs), his legacy etc, should all motivate him to perform. He has done a LOT for Indian cricket, so he deserves a decent send off. He must be given the option to exit gracefully. In the process, if he also proves that his form merits a place in the team, let him play. Hence the two test series, cut off. (No i wont count the Ind-Bangladesh test series)

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell I like to work differently. Look top 5 guys, RD, SRT, SG, VS and AK need to be punished for their performance. They can make million excuses but accountability has to be there and all these top players understand this. All I want is to send a strong message to the TOP 5. No one but all of them. If we do that then it will be lot easy. Let us send young Team to Bangla and let them fight. After 6 mos. only get two of these 4 sr into the team. Always, keep them on their toes. They have to win back their place. Unless 3rd players is also playing exceptionally well, we should not consider them playing together. I know they were complacent because they knew no one out there to replace them. Jrs lose their spot on non-performance so should srs. I just cant believe that BCCI/Selectors gonna player these top 4 guys in Bangla series and these besharam guys gonna play there. They should take moral resp of WC debacle and take 6 mons voluntary break and then come back strong.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell well sachin can go lara way. stop playing ODIs for a while and if he has something to offer in 2011 then make a come back. But i think Sachin will take one last shot at 20/20 WC before that he isnt going anywhere infact i would hate to see such a great player retire with a failure. He should go out with a bang.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell The one reason Lara has retained his skills is because he hasn't lost the fire in his belly. He still looks angry. The swish of the bat carries so much anger...the face glowers. Tendulkar carries on for the plaudits, the records, the dollars. Lara never respected money, or he wouldn't have risked implosion at one stage of his career by declaring that the game sickened him. Hasn't Lara aged? Of course he has. You can't be 37 and not age. But with bat in hand, he becomes a magnificent predator- like an aged lion facing a pack of hyenas. You are still a lion and still command respect. But if you lose your anger, you are a dead dodo. It's like looking at a big cat turn to grass because his claws aren't sharp enough any more, and become a meal himself for other ferral creatures. It's a sickening sight. Worse, you can't switch off, although you know the bitter end.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell The secret of course, is that anger and fear cannot occupy the same space. When you are angry, you lose your fear. It's one reason you avoided sledging Steve Waugh, and why almost nobody sledges Lara.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell I have reached a stage where I don't even worry what's going on with Sachin. Time and again he comes out in the middle and looks worried from ball one. One look at him and you can say he is the least confident batter going around in World cricket. Heck even the new comers look pretty confident compared to him. He looks out of place and absolutely helpless. He was one of the greats and is still a legend in both forms of cricket. Nothing can change that but he is far off from being the greatest. He is a fantastic package as a batter but his days are over. Who doesn't wish to see Tendulkar blasting away every game but I'm tired of waiting for him to score every game. WC'2007 was the decider for me, I don't care where he heads from now on but I've had it with him. I've got no patience left and wouldn't speculate what's left in him. I know Tendulkar won't be touched in India and none will dare drop him. If they do drop him I'm sure he will do his best to come back with bang but are they going to do that??? Heart says he is young enough and can play couple of years or three still but having seen him bat I'm convinced it's all over and is end of an era. Couple of years ago I only had good memories of Tendulkar but now I only have mixed memories of Tendulkar as a batsman.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell right on the money Dhondy. :wtg: we know Sachin is not 16 anymore, but the minimim we expect from sachin is to go out and play his natural game and not give any sort of respect to the bowlers, rather than getting defencive to the point that it demoralizes the rest of the team, who hasnt even stepped on to the crease, and plant a seed of "batting/conditions are tough" in their minds. Just like no-body doubted VVS's class even when he used to be the Man of 20s and 30s for quite a number of ODIs. even though every one questioned his concentration level and other things, but not his class and potential. But in sachin's case, off late and speacilly seeing him getting out in that SL match the way he did has put a Big question mark on his deteireorating hunger of winning matches for india. sad to see genius of a man to troll around the lines of mediocrity. :wall:

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell But it's just not Sachin, Ravi. All of us have lost the battle in the mind. What can be more painful than a nation of cricket lovers hear their heroes being described as "babes in the mind" by arguably the most fearless cricketer of all time? Shall we ever live this down? Yet, I knew. I knew when they buckled at the knees to hand the last two Tests to SA from a position where the series was ours for the taking. I knew that up there, where it really really matters, this lot was frighteningly frail...much weaker than we had ever feared. I was expecting the WC debacle. It doesn't hurt. What hurts is that the rest of the world now know. It was our own little dirty secret. Now it's out in the open. To be afraid is one thing, but to let others see your fear is the greatest of frailties.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell Dhonds.... u mus have heard - with Age comes Fear.... Wasnt it clear on the wall, that with so many old people in the team, u are bound to be mentally frail..... this is where i like kaif... he has failed before due to lack of ability, but never due to lack of courage... i was among the many, who thot, his natwest finish was a fluke... then u look at the past odi series in windies.... the only match we won, was sealed by Kaif... conditions difficult for boundary hitting.... he kept running singles and twos and sealed it in the end with some boundaries at the right time.... Yuvraj had the same opportunity in the next game..... he succumbed, though he is 10 times more talented..... we mus learn to compromise between youth, experience, grit, talent, agility.... we jus loaded up on one thing.... age and talent.... hence i am not surprised.... tht is the main reason, i think, the chief of selectors must go... if a team could win 21 games in a row chasing, be it home or away (remember 18 of those matches were against team that were ranked number 2 in the world)..... something must have been right about that team..... if it was as easy, australia or windies of the past would have definitely achieved it..... instead of shattering that team after some failures, it should have been fine-tuned and persisted..... i have never been more upset at a particular person as i am at Vengsarkar now.... I attribute the entire blame on one single person... heck, karachi, england-home test match.... the same experienced lineup has crumbled time and again in tests in pressure situations.... how can u go for the same in a tension filled world cup..... Chappell, as much as a moron he was, atleast did the right thing of removing frail people from the team.... it is unfortunate, our people will never learn to look at the bigger pictures.....

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell What's worse Gats, is that the two most courageous youngsters in the current squad never made it to the starting XI- Sreesanth and Kartick. Time and time again, we have made the mistake of selecting players based on performances in low pressure games. You gotta select your incumbents on temparament. You really can't go wrong. And Dravid must take some responsibility for this. The final call was his. If he can't recognize the very traits he has worked all his life to cultivate in himself in his wards, then what good is he? You don't drop a Kumble for a Bhajji, you don't select a Uthappa ahead of a Kartick, you don't leave out Sreesanth for the loser Munaf, who doesn't have the balls to bowl at his natural God-given speed. He was all too opaque, I'm afraid. It just comes back to the original point, doesn't it? He was afraid to step off the beaten track, to trust his instincts, to take risks.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell And straightaway, you jump in feet first with your abhorrence for anything that doesn't have "India" emblazoned on it, Boss. The same leanings that have seen you lampoon the greatest batsman of our genre time and time again in the past, simply because he was not born in our shores. Sorry, we've been through all that before.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell Spot on Dhonds about Sreesanth and Karthik.... One of them has won us a test match in South Africa for the first ever time and he is made to sit out..... a guy who gives it all and he would shown it to the lilliputs how it is done... KKD - this guy is a unique combination of steel and bubbles... this man, single-handedly resisted pakistan, south-africa in tense situations... made to carry drinks for prima-donnas.... you are right that RD has to carry the blame.... but u also got to understand, he was severely rebuked and snubbed by Vengskarkar after backing youth and stuttering in btween.... RD was a little jittery... the one man, that he fought for, Vengskar made it look like, he was doing the captain a charity by announcing to all and sundry.... Vengsarkar was a mediocre odi player, who himself was unfit and a terrible fielder.... it is not surprising, the kind of people he will believe and back... the first joke of selecting Jaffer as odi opener said it all for me....

I have had different ideas than what you posted above but can't help agreeing with what you have said. That is so true. Unbelivable we (including myself) still look at numbers, talent and not grit, mental makeup when deciding the team.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell I would think most posters here had Bhajji in their superselectors selection in place of Kumble and Munaf in place of Sreesanth. Heck , I won't be suprised if many had Uttappa ahead of karthick in their playing 11. So , nothing unusual about playing these three by Dravid.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell The perception is Bhaji bowls well for Lefties of SL and kumble sucked even against Bermuda.... ( Bhaji is there because of dearth of spin bowling in India) Sreesanth is way too inconsistent in ODIs and still learning the trade and he could easily be blown away by Jaya and co...Munaf is our best bowler ( Speed doesnt translate to consistency) and still is? Karthik is no match winner either ....and Uthappa is dangerous ...Its a toss up and may be a risk. Are we saying Uthappa doesnt have fire in the belly ? We lost the match , that doesnt mean the Team Selection is horrible.... The men in form Gangs/Yuvi and Dhoni sucked big time in that crucial match and thats the reason why we lost

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell Sreesanth/Karthick/Kumble for Munaf/Uthappa/Harby wouldn't necessarily have made a difference. Our fortunes were with players like Dravid, Yuvraj, Zak, Aggy, Dhoni and yes SRT. All of them had mediocre outings and we got screwed. Sreesanth has been a run a ball bowler, Karthick is also pretty unreliable and Kumble is a pretty ordinary in ODIs.
