Sachinism Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Aite, I've got a bit of a situation I was running Windows XP MCE and it started getting a bit slow because I had way too many apps running and I decided to go with a fresh install of a downloaded version of XP I made the mistake of not deleting the partition before starting and ended up with 2 OS running on the system Windows XP MCE and Windows XP Pro I went through the steps of removing one of the OS, but it didn't work for some reason. So I thought I'd start fresh using the original copy of XP MCE I have, but for some reason during installation it started coming up with errors saying certain files could not be copied and that didn't work Now I just want to wipe the hard drive and start fresh, because now I can't even use the dodgy version I have installed lol What do I do??
graphic23 Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 There's a Linux utility CD which is called SysRescCD, which is brilliant: http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page And you could also read up on fdisk, but the former has a cool graphical interface, and can do much more.

The Linux CD - you just need to boot from it, and it has a great UI to help you through cleaning/wiping/fixing/recovering the hard drive (and the data).

So I thought I'd start fresh using the original copy of XP MCE I have, but for some reason during installation it started coming up with errors saying certain files could not be copied and that didn't work Now I just want to wipe the hard drive and start fresh, because now I can't even use the dodgy version I have installed lol What do I do?? ok here's a simple way to do it ... at first backup any important things like data etc. in your usb drive etc. as you want to clean up your computer and you cannot format your primary boot drive in windows mode.. so select cdrom as the first boot device and restart your computer.. meanwhile enter your windows XP cd into the cd drive.. while restarting in the dos screen it will ask if you want to boot from cd.. go as per the intructions and enter the system using the Windows cd.. you will see a blue screen finally where it would ask you that do you want to format your disk or install without formatting.. select the option format for the drive where you will install the OS .. when the format comples it wil start installation of Windows XP .. go as per instructions and installation with go through in easy steps After your windows is installed you might need the driver cd for installing various drivers for your desktop or lapton .. so keep that handy too.. thats it .. you are done :icflove:
THX_1138 Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 if you have a OS disk, not the recovery disk, then you might not have any issues when you attempt to boot with the disk in the drive. if the booting process does not access the disk, enter the bios and change the boot order accordingly (D before C).

I had an original windows installation disk which is a hot pile of cow dung and it wouldn't install properly, but the version I downloaded off the internet did work
