Jaitley is a reasonable and impressive leader. However the bulk of BJP's strength is the bania class, and people who always have the paranoia of Muslims hanging over their head. The key reason to BJP coming to power is often a religious riot lurking somewhere in the past. You need a Advani, a Modi to take advantage of a riot, Jaitley will never do that. He is too good a person to use that kind of nonsense. xxx

He certainly deserves credit for the success Congress has seen in Uttar Pradesh. But to claim that he was the difference between a win and a loss for Congress is hyperbole, and is insulting to Manmohan, who I believe was more influential in Congress doing well this time.

Rahul Gandhi has been growing in popularity year after year as I have noticed in the last few years ... he is the most popular amongst the youth as he connects to the youth through his words better than any other leader .. he has done a lot of things in the last few years which has helped in his image .. like he goes to villages etc. to ask people how they are doing .. he eats with poor people and asks their problem and tries to solve them etc. .. he also goes to colleges and speaks to students even in the canteen to take their suggestions on India's developement .. he has interacted a lot with the common people in the last five years and this has led Indians respect him a lot .. Congress has won almost 50-70% of the seats where he made election rallies.. and most of those seats were not with the Congress previously.. so Rahul Gandhi has been a big factor in the election results but there are other factors too like Manmohan Singh as an economic reformist PM, regional parties getting marginalized etc. which were also important

Its the fact you could get a dog and name it Ghandi and make it part of the ghandi family and it would win an election. This ridiculous royal family gets votes like nothing else. Next election Rahul will be PM candiate and they will win by even more. Indians just love the ghandhis even if they do jack. Hell you could even get a gori catholic from Italy. Give her the gandhi name and even she would win an election

They have always evoked extreme reactions - people either hated them or have loved them. 2. They both have their weak points. The people who hate them focus on this and the people who love them ignore it. 3. They changed the nature of discussion in their respective fields - politics or cricket. One changed the indian political scenario into a bi-polar discussion - was able to challenge and change the status quo of congress dominance.Gangualy turned a bunch of also-rans into a dominant cricketing power. 4. They were overshadowed by another personality(Vajpayee and SRT). Though both accepted it a majority of their supporters din't. 5. They have left an indelible mark on their respective teams. The next-generation of players are the one time 'boys' of Advani and Ganguly. 6. At the end of their careers they both could not see the writing on the wall. But that is the very essence of their against-the-odds, combative nature. If they had followed conventional rules and read the writing on the wall they would never be what they are(1984 election rout of BJP and 1992 tour of Australia). So yes, it's an end of an era. It's impossible for both of them to make a comeback given their age. Some will be happy you are gone and some will be sad. But that's something that both know is a part of their destiny!

Pramod Mahajan's daughter Poonam Mahajan was denied a loksabha ticket due to internal differences within the party and with Shiv sena.

Gandhi name is just to strong. Many people just vote for the family and do not look at poilicies, performance etc. BJP simply cant compete against gandhi clan. Before they had a non indian gandhi winning now they have an indian gandhi in rahul they will be unstoppbale. Yes you may have voted congress for ressons other then surname but the masses flocked to vote for the royal family of india.I see little hope for any other contenders. I repeat they got a foreigner a non indian, gave it name gandhi and the election was won. Thats how powerful a draw the surname is. Now they have the indian rahul with his smile and wave flanked by priyanka the masses wiil vote in droves for them, no matter how the country does or what BJP do. I maintain the gandhi family dog could win the election.
