Buddadeb ran himself ragged trying to persuade Ratan Tata not to leave West Bengal as did his CPI(M) comrades in Singur. But Mamata, ostensibly fighting against unfair land acquisition, just doesn't want WB to embrace industry and keeps regurgitating the same bile CPI(M) were famous far earlier in a bid to win votes and hearts of the people. Which is probably why WB electorate have voted TMC in. Whether this will success will spill over into the State Elections remains to be seen.

The Nano deal was a sell out for the people whose lands were being compensated. It should never have gone through and I am not anti development. Land acquisition and poor compensation is a huge problem in India and there needs to be a strong opposition to such deals so that they are constantly under media and court scrutiny. You live in Gurgaon and would be well aware of how some of the villages were basically ravaged for the development of industrial complexes. I happened to stop by at a Dhaba on the Delhi-Jaipur highway a couple of years back where I was served food by a guy who used to own 2 Acres of land and had not received a single penny in compensation for 4 years. Such stories are common place wherever development projects are launched. Do you want to build a modern India on the livelihood of the poor? For all these reasons, India needs a strong counter stabilizing factor, even if it's over the top. Mamta might have many many things wrong in her personality, but has always been a firebrand and been involved with a lot grass root movements, some right some wrong. She has all my support at the moment because this general culture of unfair land acquisition has to be stopped. With more and greater industrial projects that India will have to deal with in the future, it cannot be callous to this issue. There has to be proper thought, planning, and adequate compensation involved with these things. We are not China and should not aspire to be either.
Ram Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 She will kill this govt’s credibility and undermine any sense of stability with her frequent antics, not realizing how much damage her actions and words are causing to this nation. At least with the Left, they had some sense of a larger national interests and they never compromise on their ideals. So at least you know whats coming from them. But with Mamta, even she does not know what she’s going to do. So, on key issues of national security, the economy and internal security, her eccentric behavior could be one of the biggest stumbling blocks for this govt.

I am not a fan of Mamta Banerjee (or Communists for that matter, heck I think I am fan of no politician from West Bengal) but one thing she did do was raise a solid debate on Industialization/Modernity-at-what-cost-India?? This is a vigorous debate that the intelligentia is shying away from thinking prosperity will take care of ills. Well it will not. Housing costs has gone up, pollution has gone up, if people complained about lack of walking space now they complain about parking, there is a big freaking line inside half decent schools to send kids to, top hospitals either support high end Indian corporates or medical tourists ranging from Saudi to Sweden. I do agree that Mamta Banerjee is known for her stubborness from time to time. But the issue with Nano is not only a Bengal issue, the IT doyen Chandrababu Naidu is struggling to get rid of the high flyer image in AP and even though he considers himself Socialists these days the voters arent buying. Probably a lesson for other CMs too. xxx
