I had a similar experience too. Recently visited one of my favorite dosa restaurants in Bangalore and ordered in Kannada. The waiter replied in barely passable English. I continued talking to him in Kannada and he would respond only in English. For a moment, I thought he didnt understand Kannda, but then he goes towards the kitchen and shouts out my order in chaste Kannada!!! Amazes me!! :--D
