In an interview to GQ magazine, Flintoff blamed rap music for rising violence and said countries should be careful while promoting multi-cultural societies. “I have no problems with a multicultural society, I think that is to the benefit of the country. But you have to be careful what levels you take it to,” Flintoff said. “It annoys me when I phone a hotel receptionist in my own country and they don’t understand what I am saying because they don’t speak English,” he added. The 31-year-old father of three also blamed rap music for the rising violence in the society. “I see Manchester on a Friday night and I would be horrified seeing my daughter going to the bars,” Flintoff said. “There are places I wouldn’t go to now. You see these reports of stabbings, bottlings, shootings, and you think: ‘What is happening to this country?’ “I think rap music has a lot to do with it. It makes it sound cool not to conform, and to be violent. That’s why I think that sport plays such an important role,” he added.

Every product I buy now has huge instructions in spanish, and instructions in english are neatly tucked away in fine print. i get to go get my car fixed, i get a lesson in spanish.

[/quote'] I was replacing my vacuum cleaner last weekend and went to Target. Now those boxes had the product description in Spanish on one side and in English on the opposite side. Each vacuum box was placed in the shelf with the Spanish side of the box facing the aisle. I had to flip 10 of those huge boxes to find out more about that vacuum to buy a damn thing.

English is not the official language at the federal level. as far as i remember, 30 or so states have named English as the official language in their states (including mine :D) i do not have any problem with other languages represented on mass consumer products, subways, malls, etc. I encourage this. What I do have a problem is when these other languages start to dominate English in English-speaking areas. I have a problem when I have to search around for "English". I have a problem when I go to get my car fixed in an American chain store, and no one there can speak a word of English. Now, if I lived in SoCal or certain areas of Texas or Chinatown, it's a completely different story. Or, if I myself employed a mexican/whatever to mow my lawn, it's a completely different story.
